Asus has 1 or 2 problem models (G1S especially), the rest are pretty stellar.

I'd own just about anything over Apple though.

 

I wouldn't mind owning an apple laptop if I could buy just the hardware and install my own OS on it, and as long as it wasn't $3000 with proprietary hardware lol

 

My G1S never really had any problems once I added some proper thermal paste. It was one of the more solidly built notebooks I've ever had.

 

As the article suggested, you should take the report with a grain of salt. Given that this report is from only one computer repair company, it may or may not provide much insight pertaining to reliability. After all, consumers will usually take their faulty laptops to the manufacture for repairs... especially for Macs where people usually stop by the Apple store to have them fixed.

 

The more shocking fact was that ASUS had only 1.6% market share in the US.

I thought ASUS was a very well-known and a reputable company. How come it is way behind all the other companies like Toshiba, Lenovo, Acer etc. Very interesting...

Yea, I've been using Asus products for years, before ever buying a notebook. Motherboards and desktop graphics cards come to mind.

 

Yay! My dad and some of my friends were thinking "woah, are you sure you want to buy from a company that's not well known?" "Hell yes" was my answer, and this just solidifies it

G1S and C90S have overheating issues. The other notebooks of the same lineup have mainly major battery problem. In other words, they screwed up that line up, but that's all.

 

My dad said that too. I told him I had no problems buying a laptop from the worlds largest motherboard maker, who also does ODM work for many other notebook manufacturers (most notably at the time was the MacBook).

 

When I suggest my friends to buy an Asus laptop, she said "Asus? Do you mean Acer?"

 

Do you counter with a lethal face-smack?

 

Lol that happens too often! Oh well ill take an asus over an acer any day. There is something quite crisp,clean and simple that I like about their products.

Well, Asus was founded by a few renegade Acer engineers back in the late 1980s.

 

Yeah everyone I ever talk to has no idea what Asus is.

I did however find another person in my school using an Asus laptop and of course he was an IT student lol.

But really Asus will never be as big in the US unless they can get my shelf space at the big box stores like Best Buy etc. I think BB offers like 1 15" model in store and my dad bought the 10" Eee there, but they don't have enough.



I also should say that the new ranking is a little miss leading. HP was the lowest on the chart but also had the biggest market share. So to stick up for them a little the more people you have using your stuff the more likely you will get more careless people overall that will have to take them in for repair more often. Not always because HP/Compaq's laptops may not be any worse (but they could be) but it just goes with the market share. Asus took the top spot and again they had the smallest market share so just less computers to have problems with than any of the other brands.

 

I don't want Asus to get too big, too quickly. Quality usually start dropping when you try to pander to the masses because your shareholders are pressuring you to increase profits.

 

You summed up Apple's problems nicely. They are losing quality fast. Just look at that $2,800+ 17" laptop. Right out of the gate many users had problems with graphic lines running down the screen and needed a FW fix.

Like I always say. Just because it looks nice and costs a boat load does not mean it has good quality.

I hope Asus like you said does not get like this, but now more than ever Asus is releasing tons of different laptops and netbooks and people are learning what Asus is all about and what they offfer. I guess only time will tell.

I had my Asus laptop for almost a year without problem. The only thing I wish Asus would do different is put a tad more style into the shell.

 

Asus is hit and miss when they try to add style to their notbooks. The W90 is a good looking machine for it's size and the G70 looks good once you shut off all the flashing lights, but the rest of their G-series seems to be a little too inspired by 'the Fast and the Furious' or the Civics parked in their local high school parking lot.

Asus fits in a nice niche where they've got a rather abudant variation from model to model, yet at the same time, does not offer too many customizations to have a million possible configurations.

The consequence is that when there's a problem, its only typically down to the specific model, or the series at best. So for example, if Apple gets a problem on their Macbook Pro line, it affects a larger number of owners than it would in an Asus laptop.

At the same time, Asus doesn't offer a sigificant amount of customization in comparision to some companies, like dell. Because of the lack of large variation, there becomes a higher chance of problems in companies like Dell simply because there's so many laptop configs out there.

 

You're late. Quality has essentially died in the last 2+ years. Between mid-2005 and early 07, Asus had one of the highest quality lineups (consumer model-wise). Between the W7J/S, W3V/J, V6V/J, W5A/F, those were some of the best designed and best built notebooks I've ever used.

You know in all honesty reghardware has absolutely no right to make that claim. I ve been working on laptops for for many years and to date one of few or the only dealer in the nation that offers out of warranty repair on a motherboard level. This is a fact. Only a person in my position can make any such claim however unfortunately 90% of all repairs we perform are on asus products so i cant make a comparison. A review site certainly does not. I dont care how many votes were cast. I can tell you that asus has produced many popular reliable and durable laptops. they include the following
1. w3
2. w7
3. c90 (many will argue but when sold by a good dealer they remain problem free for the most part)
4. z63
5. g1s (many will argue due to the vga issue however due to the huge volume sold the rma rate is well below expected
6. v1
7. z96 / s96
8. w2
9. vx
10. m50
11. for the most part all their smaller sized notebooks 13.3" and below though they were sold in smaller numbers were all very solid notebooks. I should know i have gone through a few over the years.
12. m70
13. g2
14. the 12" u6 series just an all around awesome notebook
15. r1 tablet (nice design)

I left out many and i only include the most popular. I did not include very recent models.
the following models were destined to fail

1. z71v (battery and vga)
2. z70va (lcd cover, inherently hard to clean vga fan)
3. a8 (all revisions had the dreaded lcd cover problem)
4. u3s (bad gps and software)
5. their umpc r2 series (just sucks)
6. z62 (cheesy unreliable plastic mold alsways cracks when bumped)

in conclusion their 15.4" barebone line was like a cursed lemon. half their barebones particularly the 15.4" line were just horrible notebooks which were never tested for durability which explains why they stoped making barebones. their prebuilt line for the most part are all reliable products with a few exceptions.

 

The New N series is good too.

The new N series, the new w series, g series are all too new to speculate. if i had to guess i would say the g50 series is very solid.
w90? no clue but knowing the caliber of user for the most part all the w90 sold will take a good amount of abuse. It is a shame that most people still dont realize. the 2 worst things one can do to a notebook is keep it on 24./7 and lug it around everywhere. the less you do both the longer notebooks will last. I wish users would get a pamphlet or something by mail telling then what not to do and how to take preventative measure. Like a car, notebooks should be warranted with hours not years. It is unfair to the people who use their notebook 1 hour a day to offer a 1 year warranty. at the same time it is very graceous to offer the same 1 year warranty to the guy that keeps it on 24/7 and beats it like a drum

 

I live in a rather small but well on-the-technology-beat country known as Denmark. I have the impression that Asus is practically unknown here. When people ask me about my laptop and i say its an Asus they all go "Acer? I know that" .. no not that plastic crap hehe.. It makes you wonder why this cheap power brand holds such a small market.. Maybe thats why its cheap and great? I should stop talking now C:

I think Asus is more well-know in Asia market. which is a big-big part of the world.

 

My aunt happens to work for Acer, but I myself am an ASUS fan. I've been through the "Asus? Don't you mean Acer?" conversation dozens of times here in the states, but I have noticed that there are more ASUS-literate peeps around nowadays. Good stuff.

I do wish though that ASUS would step away from the "swirly printed plastic case" look that unfortunately looks less like "ornately lacquered jewelbox" and more like "lap-roaster HP deathbox."

 

G70 and W90 have the brushed aluminum with chrome accents look.

 

Heh, I keep my laptop on 24/7 while running both the CPU and GPU at maximum load (I'm folding proteins for Stanford to find cures for cancer), and take it places at least once per week

Cures for cancer? You get a free pass. Them protein structures sure are computationally brutal.

 

One of the reasons I decided to by the C90S was what I read about Asus notebooks being as reliable as they were, and it did work in general like a trooper. Mind you I did have to call support, but believe it or not they were one of the easiest supports to deal with. If you work on a lot of computers your eventually gonna have to RMA something and generally speaking its a pain.

Anyone who knows or who has ever used knows that Lenovo are great. They are my favorite brand of notebooks, I currently have access to an x61 and its an absolute pleasure to use.

 

I've had my G50Vt-X2 for a month now and love it. If it ends up being a durable product like every Asus motherboard and desktop GPU I've ever bought, I will stick with them in the laptop realm as well. I had a Dell Inspiron for a couple years, thing was built like a tank and never had a problem, but Dells are so expensive for what you get now days. Asus fits perfectly in budget and has a good track record, that is a win for my book. Next computer I get will be something top of the line, whatever the W90Vp of the future ends up being. Other than Asus, the only brand I would pick up myself would be something built on a Clevo shell, likely a Sager.

 

Yay That means that if it breaks, you'll get me a new laptop for free, right?
