Well for me it's ASUS' customer service. No waiting on the phone, friendly and competent techies, free and FAST overnight 2-way shipping for RMA.

competent is the most questionable word in that sentence. heck..its downright hillarious. Asus techs are dumb as a doorknob and have no clue what professionalism even means. Then again...this is the case for all software reps. IMHO, microsoft has the most knowledgeable reps and have on a consistent basis been able to solve all my problems. All other reps have only dug themselves into a deep hole of general solutions when posed with an interesting problem. Amen MS, the only problem being...their horrible wait times. around 40 - 50 mins if youre lucky.

I love the "A" part of it. It's so elegant, unlike those words that start with "B" or one of those other inferior letters.

Asus = massive win. My Asus is literally rock-solid. I dropped my asus on the ground and it was just fine and dandy. My friend dropped his dell and cracked the hinge.

I also love the power. Me and my friends all bought laptops within 2 months of each other. I got a C90s, 2 of my friends got dell 1505s, and anotehr got a 1520. We all spent around $1500 and mine absolutely destroys all of them. I don't need super long battery life so the fact that my C90 lasts an hour and a half on a reallly good day doesn't bother me one bit. Having the desktop processor in a 15.4" gives me the power to muscle through tasks like music editing, gaming, abd using more than one program at a time. It's great. I might make my next computer an asus as well.

It offers wide range of choices, and dedicated graphics card in cheap and smaller models, good for gamers. They're reasonably priced and solid built.
However 1 thing stops me from buying asus. GLOSSY screens. There are no matte choice in new asus notebooks :(

That's probably the best reason to consider Asus over other brands. LOL :D
Apple has an "A" too but it's not so stylish (but they also have a Steve Jobs who is very stylish).

I have the U6 and I have to say, it is the best laptop I have owned, only thing I am starting to hate is the crummy battery life, 1 hr on XP?? REALLY?? 3 cell battery, ASUS really knocked it out of the park in the size.

I just got the 9 cell battery, and the weight distribution sucks. And the overall weight sucks too.... I hate the weight of this thing now :( it was soooooo nice with the lil battery, but I guess that is the compromise with a computer like this. It is powerful compared to a D420 by Dell (more expensive too)

Lets see how long it is before I replace this one (i usually get new laptops very quickly) The longest I have ever owned a laptop was 1.5 years (a macbook pro) other then that I dump them like an old gf.

Hopefully I can keep this one, since ASUS has junk resale value.

BTW, if anyone is wondering, i use this as a desktop replacement at work too... Something very few people can believe from such a small unit.

First, let me emphasize that the quality of ASUS support varies wildly across countries. You cannot generalize and say "asus support is poor" or "asus support is good". Some examples: ASUS US has very good feedback, ASUS UK gets many horror stories. I personally have very good experience with ASUS Holland.

Now, although I am an ASUS fanboy, I will try to give a non-fan-boish reply.

    The plus-es:
    - when you buy an ASUS notebook, you get a powerful machine at a very competitive price.
    - the build quality on the budget machines is usually better than the build quality on budget machines of the competition
    - ASUS machines generally look very good

    The minus-es:
    - poor battery life, on almost all new ASUS notebooks
    - build quality on the higher-end notebooks has been slowly degrading over the past year or so
    - some models are affected by design faults (like V6J/V1/R1F batteries for instance). But I think this comes with other brands as well... you just need to keep your eyes open and read the forums/reviews before buying a machine
    - not so good support in terms of: fixing bugs in BIOSes, releasing updated drivers

OP: Other than that, you can't make a generic comparison. If you're interested in a particular machine, just ask and I'm sure a lot of people will give you opinions.

I don't know, unfortunately I have little experience with other brands. I am however convinced that as long as it doesn't affect the bottom line (read: incoming profit), companies will do little to address their clients' problems... So I would be skeptical that other firms are really caring for their clients, in contrast to ASUS...

Very good and honest Pro's and Con's there E.B.E. I'd also like to add another "Pro", the replacement parts are generally quite cheap to replace. For example a keyboard, or an LCD bezel will be no more than $25 at the estore if the part is available, most manufacturers charge an arm and a leg for parts replacements.
