Hey all, I currently have an A8J that i'm looking to replace but i'm not sure if i should get another asus. I believe it's well known that the screen hinge on these laptops were quite weak and parts of it would sometimes break off, I was just wondering if this is still case or if they have improved the build quality of their laptops over the years?

You cannot generalize an entire company just because a cosmetic issue with a particular model. All brands, regardless of stature, have issues with certain models.
I have used/tested only the Asus M50, N50, N80vn, G50vt, G71gx and G51vx.
The M50, N80, G71 and G50 had no issues whatsoever, and actually felt very solid and well built. the G51 came with the keyboard unattached but I just needed to push it, and that's it, no other issues. N50 had a weak hinge, but it was only a cosmetic issue, nothing that affected performance or usability at all.
Just look at a particular model you like or think of buying, and then ask for feedback. Most users here are willing to help and extend their opinion on the subject. -
I'm lookin at the N81 at the moment, any known issues with that one? Thanks.

So far, there hasn't been many N81 owners posting any serious issues on the forum (which is a good sign).
Also check with NBR's N81 review if you haven't already to give you a better idea of the build quality:
