Just upgraded the CPU in it to a E6700 ES and a fresh cleaning and AS5... bios 1002. The cpu is getting to 80 on idle thats a bad thing. Now has anyone found high rpm fans for cooling for this unit yet ? or should i be drilling extra hole for cooling on the bottem ?

    Thanks

    Chris

Neither of those ides will help, the problem is the fans do not turn on enough. This is an issue with the way Asus writes there thermal profile in the bios. The only solution is to hardwire the fans yourself. Or you could use a notebook cooler which would make the idea of drilling holes more useful.

On a separate note, your CPU should NEVER be getting to 80* on idle! Something is seriously wrong. I would reapply your thermal grease and the heatsink and try again. If it still gets this hot I'd assume you have a faulty CPU.

Scratch that, but 80 is high. My Notebook isn't idle right now 60, 65 in Gaming Mode, watching News on my Sling box (history in the making).

Heh, are you sure you didn't accidentally read the GPU's idle temperature? That would make a little more sense unfortunately. The 8600's are very hot.

nope, its now at 69. My GPU runs on average at about 68 idle, I think that's normal (its even using the Asus Turbo Gear VGA enhancer, 500/1000/450). Then again, I use the WHQL trick (tricking the OS into believing the drivers are signed) to install the desktop drivers from nvidia's website (currently 178.13), my OS thinks I'm using an 8600GTS.

Impressive, I could never get mine that low no matter what I did.

I wrote up a quick how to install signed desktop drivers on a notebook without loosing WHQL, without INF modding or BIOS spoofing.
