    Hi,

I have had this notebook for a year and a half without any type of problems ( except for the webcam i didnt care much ) and the video started flickering on dark colors, i thought it was weird and went to NVIDIA Control Panel to tweak the colors and that flickering dissapeared.

Today, i woke up started my day with a game of checkers at Zone and suddendly the entire LCD started flickering with colors glitching etc ( like when we configured our old CRT monitors to use a resolution and frequency that were out of sync) The WHOLE COLORS OF THE LCD GOT OUT OF SYNC, i could move the mouse, but no other actions could be performed Ctrl+Esc didnt change anything in the screen so i thought: Ok, this is serious...

Turned off the notebook waited 10 seconds, turned it on again and it seems the GPU got screwed because during POST, the LCD FLICKERS AS WELL :(

I went to BIOS resetting to the defaults, nothing
I used the reset BIOS Button for 45 seconds nothing,

And i have noticed that the rear four fans are not working anymore, but im not sure if they ough too during POST, but i suspect the fans stopped working on my C90s and something got burned. I have always taken care of my notebook i dont understand why this has happened, any ideas?

    I have a E6600
    3GB Transcend DDR2 RAM
    8600M GT 512 DDR2 GPU

Do the four fans work on your Asus C90s when you power it on? I have never updated BIOS so i still have the 400some version

I am truly disappointed with this.... :(
Any suggestions you may write on a quick reply?

Have you cleaned the inside of the unit for dust and debris recently? An overheating GPU can result in artifacting and lines on the screen.

Granted, you may have a defective GPU, but it is best to eliminate other possibilities first.

Thank you for your reply, i have removed the back plastic for easy access to the components but i dont see any problematic dust, so i guess that elimininates that option...i am trying to update the bios revision from 401 to 801 and see if that changes something, there is bad weather here now, i wonder if a thunder caused this?!

But regardless, do the four rear fans work right during POST on your C90s? i understand if you are not in the mood for a restar but i cant remember, my fans now dont work during POST and he seems to be too much quite

Unfortunately, I don't own the C90s, so I can't test anything for you. Do the fans operate normally when Windows is running? Is the machine overheating? You can run something like Hwmonitor to take a look at the temperatures.

It is important to note that the original thermal compound may have completely degraded. Take the heatsink off the card and re-apply some new thermal paste such as Artic Silver. Hopefully this will cure your problem. The fans don't usually spin hard at post and boot unless the machine was hot when it was shut down last, otherwise they are quiet until the machine warms up.

If in the event your card is broken a replacement 8600M GT DDR3 card can be found at gentechpc.com or excaliberpc.com for around $170. C90S users have also had success in upgrading to a 9600M GT DDR3 card too a detailed guide is here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=316079
Also the most recent bios is 1002 if you are looking to update the bios.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you for your valuable advise, i will try to get some termal paste, but it is strange how the corrupted display happens right at start when the notebook hasnt warmed up yet. But howver it makesf sense, i bought the C90s wioth the video card already there, so the guy at the store did the instalation, maybe the termal paste was not made to last or badly applied. But meanwhile, it might be a good idea to try a NVIDIA VGA BIOS reflash? i found this thread

    maybe its worth a shot?

    Thanks

Chances are it's your GPU. I had similar problems and they didn't get resolved until I replaced my GPU.

Just for the sake of it anyone can use the tool nvflash to make a good copy of ROM ( firmware ) of the card i have (Nvidia 8600M GT 512 DDR2 ) from an asus c90s?

To do that just download the nvflash utility

    http://www.mvktech.net/component/op...func,fileinfo/filecatid,2887/parent,category/

And then make a bootable usb with the nvflash utility and at the command prompt type "nvflash -b backup.rom"

then you should have the file backup.rom on your usb pen ready to send

can anyone do that for me? I remind it has to be the same card, ie 8600M GT 512MB DDR2 from an asus c90s

I have noticed that my current backup has 59KB but im aware that theres a BIOS for the 8600M GT that is 58KB, 1KB difference, but i have tried that one and it didnt fit, so maybe that one was not compatible

Edit: of course, i made a ROM backup after i was having problems already so perhaps have backed up the problems as well thus the request.

    Thanks in adance
