just had an interesting talk with asus this morning...
me: are you aware of the recent nvidia announcement regarding possible defective GPU's
asus: yes we are
me: is the G1s affected as far as you know
asus: one moment please
asus: sir do you own the G1s or the G1sN
me: the G1s with the 8600m
asus: one moment please
asus: yes it is affected
me: what do you intend on doing about it?
asus: nvidia just announced this so we'll have to wait and see what they are going to do about it
me: ok then when should i call back?
asus: i'd give it a good 2 weeks, in the meantime please try to downlaod the updated driver
me: will do
-
They better not leave us C90S owners hanging... Our idle and gaming temps are way too high as well.
-
hopefully this explains the insanely high temperatures g1 owners are getting and its great that asus is admitting that the gpu's are defective
-
my next concern is that the g1s design is flawed to begin with, thereby contributing to the nightmares G1s owners are having
-
Yup my G1s is turning out to be the biggest and most expensive mistake I've ever made.
-
interesting.
souroull could you please keep us in the loop if you find out more info.
cheers -
-
Might this also be the cause of 96°C GPU Temp in my G1S and the "pumping-issue" (see other thread). and what about the so called "VRAM Bug" - is this already fixed?!?
-
Uh, do you want to give us more evidence then simply pasting a conversation that could have been made up (like give us the timestamps with real names)? I seriously doubt a simple Asus Support Rep would talk to you like that. Frankly, I think your trolling here.
-
ever thought about calling yourself instead of trolling all the g1s overheating threads trying to make it sound that its not a widespread problem just because it hasnt happened to you yet? my first one was running at 110 within the first month, and my current B2 took a good 4 and a half months to go from a steady 90 to 110
what evidence do you want, the recording for the call? give me a break and pick up the darn phone already
edit: i didnt paste anything, i wrote it down as accurately as i remembered it right after i hang up the phone -
i was just about to buy myself an Acer Aspire 5920G-602G25Mi - Core 2 Duo T7500 / 2.2 GHz - RAM 2 GB - HDD 250 GB - GF
8600M GS - Vista Home Premium for 600 euros (brand new from a shop) which i thought is an excellent price for this kind of
hardware. Before i invest my 600 euros i did a mini research on the net trying to found any known faults or problems of
this specific unit. Then i bumbed on the NVIDIA scandal. I can only describe it as a scandal because the little info the
company has outed can be only scandalous. When you know that you have a gpu that is bound to fail it is like a terminal
disease. You can try but at the end death is inevitable. Now if this "death" is going to be inside or outside the warranty
period that is irreleavant. Things like that should be treated faulty or not with the same measure RECALL!!! Of course the
only reason they are not doing that is that it doesnt have to do with the security of people (like a fuel hose in a car)
but it can harm only financially. And that makes me furious.. Should there be explosion of the gpus due to thermal increase
to see some action. Btw no i am waiting to see what nvidia will have to say...i expect a cover up and i am in search of a
notebook using ATI gpu. -
does someone have a link to Nvidia's announcement regarding possible defective GPUs?
-
-
Nvidia just confirmed it's only a small % of units that are affected and that desktop chips aren't. Probably the first batches so yes G1S/G2S and C90S probably since they were manufactured arround the same time. My 8600M GT's sticker says April 07. >_>
I say free replacement to 9600M GS GDDR3. I'd love you Asus -
Same as on my C90S. I run folding@home while playing games so the fans always kick in so I stay 96~104
-
They said nvidia is releasing new drivers that make the fan spin up sooner? When are they releasing them? I would like them .. .
-
they are up but guess what, different driver, same ****
-
Lol, well, that just sucks for the c90s owners then...our fans are at the all mighty will of our bios which is only meant to keep the CPU cool...>.>
-
-
-
If I run wPrime, the stability portion of it, I can get my GPU to get down roghly 61C(If Ocing CPU), and this is in a room that's at 88F so I don't deem it too bad, but without wPrime running, the typical temp in Standard Mode is around 75; OC Mode is around 69C~71C. Hopefully Asus and Nvidia do something for both the c90s and g1s to help us out. Anything!
-
the driver is on the asus support website
http://support.asus.com/ -
Is it 177.66?
In idle mine is staying 74~83. 74 right now. -
G1S in idle :
72º GPU
56º CPU
52º HDD
with 177.66 i noticed a drop of 2/3 º in gpu temps in idle , the reason i think it is cause powermizer downlocked the gpu even more than previous drivers .
And i can't find news in http://support.asus.com/ , the last driver they inserted in the site was for the touchpad in 2008/01/15 -
oh damn you're right, i thought it said 2008 for some reason
i wonder where the new driver he told me about is... i didnt even bother asking but it should have been there
maybe nvidia released a new oem driver? ill check laptopvideo2go -
i bumped into this while searching google
http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-9983840-1.html
so this guy is saying that whoever got new drivers means that they are affected... now, the guy on the phone told me to d/l the new driver, but its not on their website -
...great, this would explain why my GPU in my C90S failed and had to be replaced...twice. Now should I go send my notebook and go another week without it at work or just hold out, seeing as its holding up right now and prey that they will come out with a new video card?
-
When is your warranty expiring? If there's no news by August 1st, I'll RMA my card. I'll be needing my laptop by the 21st so I hope Asus will do quick as usual
-
I thought the warranty is 2 years, if its only 1 year I have until July 27th.
edit: Just talked to an Asus tech, they claim that since I've already had my card exchanged 2 times I should have the revision and that mostly the DDR3 models were effected and that was why they were pulled. They also said that they re-released the DDR3 cards now on a very limited bases that should be working fine now, so if you have the DDR3 card...hit 'em hard. The C90s only has a 1 year, darn. I also talked to him about the possible cards upgrades, they said that they are testing Nvidia 8700M/9700M and ATi HDxxxx cards for the C90P which should work with the C90S(blanked on the ATi, cause it doesn't interest me). -
Okay, good news. A 9700M GT would be nice. I wouldn't trust the C90S cooling for a 8700/9650M GS though... lol.
What is your revision/manufacturing date of your card? (GPU tells revision, manuf date is written on the card). I have an A2 from April 07
EDIT: I just checked the estore and they have a 256MB DDR2 8600M GT now, $98 -
Would the 8700M/9700M work in the G1S ? -
No, the G1S has a soldered video card
-
I Demand a new g1s !!!!!!
-
well for whever doubted my phone call, there you go, someone else verified it
when i send mine in i'll send my 2 receipts for 2G1s along with it, the nightmare's i've had with this POS and demand anything without a 8600mgt, i dont care what they send me.
edit: wait so... they said you must have the non problematic revision if you exchanged it twice.... hmmmmmm, i wonder how long they've known about this then... when was the last time you got it replaced? -
-
Hmm..wait, I figured that the C90P would've been MXM III. Very interesting news, nice rangerXML!.

ilikeicehockey Notebook Evangelist
I have a G1S that was purchased around september of last year. Would it be affected with this? If so any chance that I could get an upgrade of it? possibly the new M50? that would be sweet. and is the only problem an overheat? sorry but i did not want to read all 4 pages.
thanks -
I think the best way for you to find out is if you call them, ilikeicehockey. I doubt, however, that you would be upgraded to the M50, but asus might if you payed off the difference.
-
The G1S costs more though.
-
Lol, well, I'd call asus then and ask them to pay up.
-
we getting anymore news on this, like what exactly asus or nvidia plans to do, i'd love to get this thing replaced before i go off to college
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
This is corporate level marketing and response, etc and nVidia just filed their SEC brief..... I highly doubt anything is going to get settled in the next 2-3 weeks, let alone potential RMA protocols etc. You're going to be dealing with this during your first semester, in all likelihood.
I wouldn't expect them to authorize complete unit replacements anyway, probably some sort of RMA with gpu replacement only, if anything. -
I contacted ASUS support regarding my G1S and to see if my laptop was affected by this whole thing. Here's what tech support had to say:
"Nvidia found certain batch of 8600M GT video adapter that were found faulty but the ASUS systems were not affected. But if you are having system problem related to the GPU, please let us know and we will be glad to do a diagnostics and replace the video adapter if found defective."
Anybody getting this same response from ASUS support? I guess my main reason for the question is that this tech support rep is saying that "the ASUS systems were not affected" but from reading the earlier posts that doesn't seem to be the case. -
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Your response from Asus support is probably because according to nVidia's more recent official press releases, the problem was supposed to be isolated to a few OEM channels and not the entire mobile 8600 line.
The G1 does have a history around here of gpu issues (stuttering, etc), and whether that is due to nVidia's gpu problem, Asus' manufacturing or chassis design is yet to be ultimately determined it seems..... -
If they dennie it , there won't be any new bios release to boost up the fan ?
Dell has released new bios for that purpose :

-
not affected my ass
i hear the 9500m chips are nice and cool on load. why the 30 degree difference between the same core on the same chassis
the hell with that, i'm demanding anything other than the 8600m or else i send it in for warranty every damn week
anyone got any more news?
