Any ideas on how one would go about getting the MLED to flash when i have new yahoo mail? (for example if yahoo messanger was running and the new mail symbol came up (little envelope in the system tray)

    Thanks,

Chkmail still doesn't react to new mails in other folders than standard "Inbox" folder. I'm using Outlook 2002. Is there a solution for that? Other than changing mail reader...?

@Hyde: Nope, changing your mail reader will be your only option. Or wait for micro$oft to change their outlook (pun intended).

@flaxx: I don't use Yahoo mail, but if it changes the UnreadMail registry key, yeah, it could be done. Otherwise: nope. You have the source, go try.

There probably is some way at the BIOS level, but I have no idea.

I'm a bit suspicious about the battery LED, I see it flicker as the battery gets near fully charged, and then it finally winks out when charging stops. I get the feeling it's directly inline with the charging circuit, and not controlled by software. But I really don't know one way or another.

Thanx to Highlandsun, i made a modification to his program.
I used a part of his code to build a DLL which communicate with the ATKACPI and then i made a VB.Net program which communicate with POP or IMAP server to look for new messages in your mail boxes. This way there's no need to have outlook or even thunderbird, it is totally uneeded to run your mail client.
For the moment it is in French, but i think i will make it available in english if you want.
    bye

I've just finish the multilang version. For the moment it is only in English and french.
    here it is: http://Lenny41590.free.fr/Chkmail.rar

As i have to take a closer look to this Asus ACPI, i'd like to know how you found the name of the LED inside the driver. I know that you use a disassembler but then what did you do in the asm code to find what you were looking for?
thanx and enjoy my software, please email me if you find a bug.

anyone created something to take control of the wifi led?
How would I go around to do that? I switched my wifi card to an atheros and lost both the button functionality and the led. I'd like to be able to plug the led back.

I have an Asus A6000 notebook Windows XP Home Edition. I downladed the app but It didnt work, it just brought up a command line window at startup. Fortunately I managed to make a few modifications and it now runs just fine.
The modified app & source can be found at

    http://www.republika.pl/crazybee/chkmail2.zip

    thanks a lot.

    Hi@all,

I was testing around a while with various ChkMail versions (originals from ASUS), but all of them stopped to work after a while (up to 300MB Ram usage after 2 hours and then the app killed itself). After searching for alternatives to ChkMail I found this thread and I used some Information, I found in it, to build an alternative version with support for Outlook & other Mail Clients, a multilanguage user interface (at the moment: english&german) and the ability to control and use both led's (Mail LED & W-Lan LED). All information, screenshot and download can be found here.

Great to hear, that it works and it is useful :)
Thats what I needed / wanted (And I think a lot of ASUS users are experiencing the same problems with the original version...)

Comments appreciated ;) If you have a problem or only want to tell others that it is working for you (and on what type of ASUS NB e.g. A6VA) please leave a comment at my site, at the bottom of the download page.
    Thanks.

Credits go to highlandsun - the led switching function that I am using is based on his work.

    Hello.

Thank you so much! You made my V1S's led turn on for the first time.

There is a problem though. It only updates the info the first time, just when I connect the MSN Messenger. Then, when I see all my emails, in Chkmail it remains unseen, and keep blinking until I restart my notebook.

    How do I fix this?

Hi! nice to hear it works on other ASUS books.

My app reads the values out of the registry, like described in the help. So you should check the REG Keys manually before you launch the app (and ChkMail is not in blinking state) and after the LED has started blinking, so you can see, whats the difference now. Then it is upon MSN Messenger to reset the values in the registry, so that my app can register, that you have "seen" or read your mails. It seems that MSN Messenger does not reset the value, so it is done by the system on reboot.

The reg key can be found here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

there may be subfolders. The checked value in each folder is MessageCount

i have a little problem... the app work but first when i installed it he didn't find any of my mail.. i needed to go check in regedit the regkey you said and then reloade mail account for him to see it... and now the app see my mail but like said i need to go check in the regkey to make the app react and fire up the blue led... and to make it stop i need to go check again the regkey...
i use windows live mail and it reset the value of the key that shows unread mails...

    Hi Grelot,

can't reproduce the errors you are reporting. Whats your OS? Admin Rights?
I have made a little tool to test, where the problem is. It writes a TestAccount into the Registry. So first start RegTester and click on RegWrite. Then start ChkMail and reload the accounts. You should see an account called TestAccount. Check it. Now you can use 'RegWrite' and 'RegDelete' to see if ChkMail is checking right ;) (MessageCount is set to 1 by pressing RegWrite and set to 0 by pressing RegDelete)
To delete the TestAccount afterwards, you can simply press 'RemoveTestAccount'.

Hope this will help to find, where the problem is, cause for me the reg checking is working, but can't test it with all apps e.g. LiveMail (should not be needed, cause the system of setting and checking remains always the same)

Did you try it with my app RegTester? That would be important for me!
So it would be clear, if it is a problem between registry and chkmail or if it is a problem between registry and used client. My app is "emulating" a mail client by setting different values. So please do the tests as described above by me and let me know, what happened ;)

Is there a registry key that orders the other key "Message Count" to refresh?

@ PipoPT: No, there is no such "magic key" ;) It is upon YOUR mail / IM client, that it updates the message count.

@ Grelot: So ChkMail would do the right job, only that the client doesn't update the keys.

I can only tell you that, what I have found by doing a quick google search...

Thunderbird updates the status of the unread e-mails in the Registry when it is started, closed or by default every 5 Minutes. It seems the Thunderbird versions > 1.5.0.2 update the Registry faster.
There exist other clients, that update the status only when started / closed.
