I'm currently considering either an Asus W3A or an Compal FL30 (ChemBook 2030) and I'm wondering if anyone has insight on how the Asus Color/Crystal Shine dispalys compare to the Compal FL30. Brightness? Contrast? Granularity?
Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I hate to be ignorant, but I can't tell you how the anything Asus has compares to anything Compal would make. However, I do up a page on the W3's screen this past year and it may or may not be helpful to you... I don't have a direct link the moment... but you could try to search for it, or maybe someone has it saved...

you're also comparing glossy vs matte -
Thanks for the info. I know it's glossy vs. matte, but the general question is regarding the brightness, contrast, and sharpness of the LCD panel. I don't think that this is a big issue as I would assume it would be easy for someone who had seen the two side-by-side to make a quick visual comparison of how the brightness and contrast looked on two notebooks.
I'll see if I can track down any more info via search (already been through most FL30 related posts and the review comparing it to the Dell 8200). -
Last night, I wrote a long message. When I posted it, I got an error - invalide thread, and told me that I had not logged in. Maybe, I use Mozilla and it gave me such error. So, I lost the post.
* Design: Asus Z63a is the winner, but Compal FL30 is sturdy and nice.
* Screen Quality: Compal FL30 has more sharpness and smoothness. Asus Z63a has sparkle effect when you enable ClearType, but Compal FL30 has little to none, very nice matte screen.
* Compal FL30 is brighter than Asus Z63a, but the view angle is not as good as Z63a.
* Compal FL30 is running quietly and cool. Z63a is little warm and generates more heat if you want to use 7200rpm HDD. Compal FL30 is the winner here.
I had a Z63a for 3 months and I sold it. I am currently using Compal FL30, and I am happy with its overall performance and design.
Yes, Compal is not as popular as Asus, but that does not mean Compal does not make good laptops, especially FL30.
I hate to argue with people who keep thinking Asus is the best. You won't be disappointed to buy a Compal FL30. -
Thanks zenitu. Actually, I own a ChemBook (Compal) that I've been using for the last two+ years as a development machine. I have to agree with you with regards to Compal build quality; it is indeed very solid. In all respects, it's been a sturdy and dependable notebook. My only gripe is with the LCD panel, which is, after seeing the XPS Gen.2 screens, washed out and leaves me wanting in terms of contrast.
Definitely appreciate the feedback. I'm leaning towards it a bit more now
