    Hi,
I am new to this forum. I am looking to buy an Asus notebook for work purpose. As a graduate student, I am primarily involved in computational simulations work that involves intensive calculations and also a lot of graphics. My budget ~ $1600.
Which model would be ideally suited for my purpose? Also, does ASUS provide University discount?

    Typical configuration would be:

    1.7-2.0GHz processor
    14-15" screen
    1GB RAM
    60-80GB HDD
    8X DVD +- RW/CD
    Radeon graphics card

I have been looking at possible options:

    1. Z70VA
    2. V6V/ V6VA

I look forward to your suggestions.

    Thanks,

The W3V would also be ok for you, but all listed will exceed your budget.

Um.... Right now we have only a handful of V6v's left...... but we've got $100 off what's left and you could combine that with member discounts (if you had the post count and time on the forum... which you don't).

... If you want one of the remaining V6v's - since you don't qualify for the member discounts - I could still hook you up with a free 1gb stick of ddr2 533....... that would give you..

    1.86ghz cpu
    60gb/5400rpm hdd
    15" screen
    1.5gb ram
    64mb ati x600

.... the dvd burner is a 2x, but even the V6va only has a 4x... that's how the super slim models are... I know it's $100 over your budget, but there are still other ways to help.... like a 2% cash discount if you wanted to do a bank transfer or money order or something like that.

If you're interested you could always just drop me an email instead of taking this out on the forum.

you could probably get the Z70va if you cut down on some things such as an OS (if you're in university, you should be able to get a legit one from them as a student.. at least many other uni's i know do that)..
and perhaps a smaller HD and a 1.7ghz Processor.

... that's true too. The V6 is obviously sexier, but if you want to change what you're getting.... you could probably work that out well with a Z70va if you wanted.
