    Hey guys,

My friend recently bought an Asus Eee 1005HE (i think) and told me it is lagging when he plays youtube videos. I plan on checking it out tomorrow but I just wanted to make sure the hardware is capable of running this? Can other people with proper drivers run youtube videos fine? (perhaps not HD but normal and hq?) I plan on updating his drivers and checking out his heat etc... any other suggestions?

Ps. He got it two days ago and is using it straight out of the box, no updates.

    Thanks

All netbooks currently lag on youtube HQ due to the single core 1.6ghz Atom, My 1000H plays normal quality just fine in XP but HQ or HD is not going to happen.

Youtube uses flash, flash takes a lot of cpu power.

I think there are some codecs you can plug in to decode it different and it will make it run better, also having 2gb of ram and a fast hdd helps a lot in things.

On the original EEE's that came with the 4000rpm drive people that upgraded there hdd said the hdd upgrade fixed the lag in normal video playback lag, while those that upgraded to Vista found that 2gb of ram fixed there lag issues.

For the netbook for now normal quality youtube videos will have to do.

flash video just isn't very efficient.
normal quality would play just fine though.
monitor your memory usage (press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC in windows)...
most likely, if the only thing you're doing is watching the youtube video, you do *NOT* need to upgrade the RAM to 2gb. 1gb is sufficient for XP if you are not multi-tasking.

also, upgrading the HDD should not have an impact on the video lag, but i might be wrong
it will allow your internet browser and computer to start up faster though.

Yes the 2GB is a Vista recommended upgrade not XP, the 4200rpm drive was way slower than a 5400rpm drive, when your streaming a video its saving it to your hdd to play, and the old hdd was so slow it couldnt play the video fast enough.

    @ViciousXUSMC:
yes, i read your post - i was just saying that 2gb ram usually does not make a difference in XP for a netbook.
I know that you elaborated that the HDD/RAM upgrade was for certain scenarios, however it doesn't hurt to clarify :)

in any case, given the speed of the atom, I would not recommend an vista upgrade - 2gb ram or not.
also - correct me if i'm wrong, but while the flv is saved to HDD, isn't it buffered in RAM while it is played? in which case, as long as the flv download is faster than the playback speed, you should be fine.

and - i'm not sure what the 1005he comes with, but my 1000he came with a 5400rpm drive, and I suspect the 10" netbooks all have 5400rpm drives.

the original eee's (i'm assuming you're refering to the 7" models) operated on celeron or something, with really slow (cheap) SSD's and linux.
flash player in linux is even less optimised than in windows, and if the user uses the default packages instead of that from adobe, it is even worse.

anyway to reiterate - the 1005he should not have problems with regular youtube videos
    1. check the "red bar" - is it at least growing to the right faster that the circle that represents your current status?
    2. when the video lags, do you see that "loading" circular dots, or just the video just jerk and pause intermittently?
    3. try turning off unneeded programs and see if it helps the lag
    4. monitor your RAM usage

DK999, you have good ideas but there is much to be learned. I have found that even pre-loading a video has no effect upon its playback when discussing Youtube HD. I have tested out numerous scenarios with this on both my 1000H and friend's 1000HE. Testing with XP/W7, GMA Booster, EBooster, overclocking (to factory limit), caching video, 4200RPM/5400RPM/7200RPM, etc. etc. The closest the both of us got was HQ video running rather nicely. HD always had jerky playback no matter what. Youtube has a certain amount of lag on any platform I have ever used...including the same friends Xeon setup. While the little guy can handle 720P via VLC/other, it does not chew on Flash very well. It would be nice if Adobe could optimize a bit better.

Instead of suggesting a Vista upgrade, which has nearly the same battery life and comparable ram usage when tweaked properly, go with W7. It is a dream, and runs comparable to XP when you have enabled/disabled the proper features. For this, you will need a 2GB upgrade...but at the cost you cannot go wrong. Some suggestions are disabling pagefile (do so are your own risk), using EBooster(for program caching), ad GMA Booster(for a slights graphics improvement). The above are my experiences with my EEE over the last 10 months or so.

so... in summary, would i be right in saying that:

either upgrade to win7 with 2gb RAM for netbooks, or stick with XP for best performance
(alternatively i'm using ubuntu - make sure you use the adobe flash player instead of the default package)

stick with normal quality youtube / metacafe/other sites' videos, but if lag is really bad,
download it via clipnapper or other sites, and use VLC/other .flv players

I've never heard of the 1005HE, but if you're referring to the 1005HA, you can use Eeeclt to overclock the CPU and see if that will help with the video lag issue.

Totally forgot about EECtl. I haven't kept up with it, have they fully updated for the 1000x series, or still communities configs? None the less, still another great option.

I'm not sure, but it works for on my 1008HA and 1000HE while someone else also reported that it works on their 1005HA.

setfsb I think has the EEE PLL in it now also if you just want to OC the cpu.

It maybe will help with HQ video but I think HD video will still be out of reach even with the OC.
