Just to see how many sales it would get at launch...![]()
I voted yes...

as long as it's capable of web browsing and word processing i think it'll be a neat little gadget to carry around regardless of how poor the build quality may turn out to be. at $200 it's a steal.
-
IF it can accept regular 2.5 inch hard drives, its a steal.
Make it an mp3 player. Ive got an extra one already. -

Maybe somthing like this for my kids when they get older, but thats several years from now that they would need it.
Lets home somthing like it is still around. -
I dont think you will see it in the mass market in Europe or the USA. In the Reuters article it says
-
I think this Eee is like an Ipod, it's just an accessory.. If i need more copmuter power i ll go for something else for sure.
-
an amazing machine, but..................
it is absolutely screaming out for a $399 version with an 8.9" widescreen capable of 1024x600.
1024 is a useful minimum screen width for browsing, and there is certainly room to fit a standard 8.9" screen in that chassis.
$399 for a version with an 8.9" screen an a 16GB flash drive would sell millions in the developed world, especially looking as good as it does!
what do you think? -
^^
This only use for net browsing. Im not too interesting, but for some ppl this gadget look uptodate and high class. -
I think haveing such a small screen in a wide body like that makes it look a bit childish. Kinda reminds me of the Nintendo DS. But it does look alot better then that green white OLPC thing.
-
In its current state, and basing this only on PR, etc, it's definitely something I could use. However I would (obviously) like to hear some real world experiences with it.
It just sounds too good to be true at that price, and when it sounds too good to be true...... -
its weird tho, the chassis looks like it was designed to house a 8.9" screen, so i really hope that Asus intend to release a version later on that uses such a screen and comes with a slightly higher price-tag.

I have absolutely no doubt that there is a single person here that wouldnt hate this thing. Dont expect any good reviews. Dont expect it in the states either
-
you are saying that nobody would like it (that is the implication of how you phrased your sentence)?
why not?
I like it, and live in the UK so don't care whether it retails in the states or not. -
why only net browseing? it can be use as dvd and mp3 player. u can run ms office on it and plug almost evrything into it. ins't that what must of a standart p.c users do most of the time?
-
You cant use it as a DVD player because it doesnt have a DVD drive. Doesnt even have a CD drive. MP3s ok but you are limited by the space and I dont expect a great sound chip or anything. Have you ever tried doing office at a 800x480 resolution? It is possible sure but not something you want to work with to do any long tasks. The performace should be fine. About what you get out of a 4 year old laptop I would expect. Pentium M 1.4ghz level maybe. Hopefully the flash will be reasanablely fast.
Oh and dont expect it in western europe either. -
Ok, I am pretty sure none of us should be getting one of these, unless you really wanna spend 1000 times more to get it from the black market in Africa, because the purpose of the cheap price tag is for the sake of the third world countries where kids have nothing. So by having this pricetag, their governments and non profit orgs can supply them to the schools of those countries. This laptop is for the purpose of giving the poor a chance at connecting to the world and learning purposes of course. So lets just hope very soon, the people at work in making these laptops will be able to hit the goal of providing a functional laptop for 100 dollars or less, that is the goal of One Laptop Per Child.
-
If you want to watch movies on this thing, i think you ll need to rip the film into another HDD or flash drive... -
i watch movies on my notebook in divx format most of the so no need for a dvd/CD drive. if u hear mp3 with earphones the quilty will be a lot better. so i think that in this tag price this is a good deal what so ever.
-
-
so give me a $399 version with an 8.9" screen and the $199 version of linux.
Asus have stated that the EEE is not restricted to the third world, it is a commercial product. so give me the version i want and i will buy it, more money for Intel/Asus. -
Where did Asus or Intel said that is not restriced to developing countries? What I read was exactly that (see post 5). I know they said it is a commercial product but that says nothing about where it will be sold.
-
If it comes out in the next 2 months, I might get one to tide me over in class until the V1 refresh comes out (assuming the V1 doesn't come out before then).
-
I'm getting one for sure!
Some people are saying it has a small screen and its poor resolution etc. Well compare this thing to a PDA! I'm going to sell my PDA and get this thing!
I find basic word processing on my PDA quite easy. And it has a 3" screen and 320x240 resolution! Something with a 7" display is going to be a lot better!
I think it will be a great secondary PC. Not one you would want to spend time with hours on end, but it would be great for taking notes on and chatting online.
Just watch that. Notice the people in the little slideshow? Do they look like poor people in developing countries? To me they don't. They look like ordinary middle class people who want a cheap, easy to use notebook that they can take with them just about anywhere. I don't think Asus has any intention of this competing with or replacing the $100 one child per laptop program. -
hmm maybe your right. But still I really do think they should compete though. Try and get the best product at the lowest prices for people, but of course competition might get in the way of delivering the laptops to people. But nonetheless the laptop imo still targets low budget people.
-
I lived in develeping countries for 8 years and I can tell you many of their adds are with 'white people.' Doesnt matter if local or foreign adds.
-
I'll take 3.
-
I would be interested in getting one, hopefully more reviews would be coming out in the ensuing months. Something between my smartphone and normal laptop. Didn't the article say that it would be sold to the general consumer as well?
-
If it comes to the US, I think I'm going to get one for sure. I like the Foleo, but it's going to cost more probably. I'm looking for something light and compact that I can whip out for casual use. A ultra light notebook costs a lot of money, so something like this would do the job excellent. It would be between this, the Foleo and the Via thing and this one looks like the best one!
-
Someone edited my poll... lol

"available in 7" and 10" versions"
-
I am. I'm after the 10" one with 1gb ram. It'll probably only be 200 quid - cheap as chips! H
Hope its the same dimensions as the 7" and with 2.5" hdd. -
You know, at the same price as an iPod nano with the same amount of flash memory, this really can't be all that bad.
I am concerned about the availability though; however, if I really want one, I can always get a relative in India to send me one.
This thing takes the Intel UMPC concept and mauls it. They make a device almost as usable (but without the touchscreen) and then charge 1/4 or even less for it. -
The VIA Nanobook has caught my eye as a potential portable for working - not 4-hour stretches, but during commutes, lunch, airports, it would be fine. Definitely not the Foleo.
Or the Eeek. -
You know we'll all end up upgrading the base configuration until it costs $500! And then ASUS got us anyway!
-
For kicks, sure
Though I must admit at the time being, I don't see myself using it much, though that may be just me unconsciously trying to protect my wallet.
-
Are Asus Eee and the Sony Via the only ultra small pcs of these kinds?
-
I cant find any other useful use of this computer other than surfing the web and simple applications, so no. Maybe for a toddler or young child to get familiar with computers?
-
I can see installing one of these somewhere in my car, connecting a GPS receiver and optionally getting a WAN card (either through USB or whatever ports are offered) and heaving a sweat navigation/entertainment/web system.

At $200, the EEE will be a nice toy to have. Or can make very good Christmas gifts.
-
How can you NOT get one? Cheaper than an iPod, the PSP core pack, and every new notebook known to man - its seems like a no brainer to pick one of these up. Get them, they are almost disposable at $200
-
Ya well compare it a gadget such as ipod
Even if it doesnt have a way to get a hard drive in it, if it has usb id put a laptop hd external to it.
ITs the ultimate car stereo device. and movies too. Really its not much more than those little dvd players.
Its good id get one. -
install suse on there and we are away, perfect office PC.
the 945GSM chipset even has enough grunt to run AIGLX/Compiz.
the ten inch inch screen is the way forward.
Q: do you think it is the same screen found in the foleo, which also has a 10" widescreen? i have not seen a 10" screen before, 10.6" yes, but not ten. -
I've got Compiz/beryl installed on ubuntu on my W5 .. 12" .. i can live with the extra 2"
so i voted no! -
Losing/Breaking the Eee is not as heartbreaking as breaking ur W5
-
if the 10" is going to cost 200$ (wich i can't belive it will) this thing will be a sweet toy to buy.
edit: o.k found this on asus website: "Shih also stated that ASUS plans to start shipping the units in July or August, with a target of selling 200,000 units this year – all under the ASUS brand. Amid gasps from the audience, the Eee PC units were revealed to come in at an extremely competitive price of around USD $199 for the 7" units, and about USD $299 for the 10" version" -
In case anyone hasn't seen this yet, here is a product ad for the Eee:

The slideshow can also be found here: http://event.asus.com/eeepc/
-
I have now found the only flaw with the EEE. At $300 for the 10" one, its creeping up to the price range of the old Sony TRs, which are going on eBay for $400-500.
-
vivek do u have a link 2 see the TRs ?
-
The prices appear to have gone up since I last checked. In March there were a few TRs with Buy It Now prices of $490 - 550, and a T150 at $600. Now they are all at 800+, but I'm sure actual auctions will have lower prices.
