    Ok, first off, I know there have been lots of posts concerning warranties, but I couldn't find an answer to my question in any of them, so here's my question:

    I've always been troubled by the fact that if you get an upgrade on an Asus Ensemble notebook from your reseller, you no longer seem to have warranty coverage from Asus. How can this be? I mean, they're not allowed to do that, are they?

    It,s like with a gaming console, there is a sticker on one of the screws to open it, if the sticker is broken/remove the warranty is void. The resseller will warranty the laptop with the same condition than Asus.

    No, a company can't void a warranty just because a sticker is broken, not in the U.S.

    They don't do that from what I understand. The notebook is covered the same by Asus except for the part that was upgraded. The re-seller (authorized Asus rep) warranties the upgraded part/s. On my G1s, if the HDD goes out or has issue, my re-seller will take care of it, not Asus.

    Asus honors the warranty when upgrades are made by the authorized reps. Also, if the decal on the CPU screw is not in tact it voids the warranty.

    First of all, they can't specify who makes the repairs. Also, simply breaking a decal shouldn't do anything to your warranty, unless it hurts the CPU in some way.

    See, they say on that site, and in an email I sent them last week, that if the upgrade is not performed by an authorized dealer, the warranty will be voided. But under U.S. federal law, it doesn't seem like they can do that. That's why I was asking for clarification, to see if anyone had any more information on the subject.

    If you break the sticker, I think you will be able to keep the warranty, but you will probably need to threaten to sue them or something like that.

    Sorry, but that's how it works. Here are the terms.

    (a) the product has been tampered, repaired and/or modified by non-authorized personnel;
    (c) the warranty seals have been broken or altered;

    They can "suggest" who makes the repairs based on the notion that they cannot be held accountable for an incorrect repair done by someone unauthorized. That's how nearly all manufacturer warranties work, especially in America. It's the exact same for, say, HP laptops. Take one to Circuit City's Firedog and ask them to do fix it. They'll tell you to take it to Best Buy, who is authorized to make such repairs, even if you purchased it at Circuit City. The same deal goes for your video game systems, monitors, televisions, ect.

    Here's the Federal Law, in case you wanted to check to see if that's legal.

    "The following is an example of a permissible provision that excludes coverage of such things.

    While necessary maintenance or repairs on your AudioMundo Stereo System can be performed by any company, we recommend that you use only authorized AudioMundo dealers. Improper or incorrectly performed maintenance or repair voids this warranty."

    The assumption is that if you go get your laptop repaired by "Jack's PC Repairs" and then bring it to Asus later to say that now it's no longer posting, they'll find evidence inside that there's been tampering that may have caused the problems. In that case, they can void your warranty.

    Yes, but they can't just blanket state that having repairs or upgrades done by an unauthorized dealer voids the warranty, as that's specifically prohibited in federal law. I understand that they can suggest it, and that if they find evidence that the unauthorized upgrade caused the failure, your out of luck, but I just can't understand how they can make such a blanket statement.

    I guess their lawyer's have determined that blatantly stating such a thing is for their best interests. If they don't state it, they may end up paying for other people's repairs/modifications gone wrong. If they do, they might get a couple minor lawsuits from people who realize that's wrong. They decided that dealing with the latter problem was more cost efficient.

    I can't explain that. I can only tell you that if they provide you a written warranty, they can't void it just for breaking a sticker, unless breaking that sticker somehow made covering the warranty impossible (if it had vital part numbers on it or something).
