so i have already upgraded the ram to 2x1gb sticks,
looking to upgrade the cpu but don't know what my options are in regards to compatiblity? or even how to install a laptop cpu. have built many computers and installed my laptop ram so i sort of know how to fiddle
wiki says the t5500 is an M type so i assume the highest is a t7600?

is the jump not big enough to warrant paying for a new cpu?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors#Core_2_Duo_2

i also don't know how to change my video card to 512mb of ram?
or does it just automatically do that when stressed enough.

any input would be greatly appreciated.

You cannot change your GPU, where the 3D performance bottleneck probably is.

The CPU can be upgraded to a certain extent (voiding warranty) but won't give you much real-life improvement (nearly zero I should say; the CPU is usually not the bottleneck in gaming).

What I suggest is that you make sure you use recent GPU drivers.

You could also do clean Windows install, with no ASUS bloatware. Then streamline the installation. Follow the guides around (check my signature for instance). See if that improves performance.

Well Everyones right you can't change your GPU but you can put a faster CPU in there - I did on my very similar F3Jr and it's made quite a lot of difference. I'm not into games but I use Photoshop and also a very resource-hungry planetarium application. I still need to tune things up in the throttling department and am just starting to get my head around rightmark CPU. I've had some mixed experiences with 'hacked' gpu drivers - the latest version of ATI's CCC (8.2) didn't work well after I converted it for use in a laptop with Mobility Modder - The Omega driver wasn't great either. I rebuilt the machine just this week after taking delivery of the 7200rpm hard drive and I've reverted to Asus' original graphics driver which while perhaps a little dated is completely glitch-free which is more than I can say for the Mobility modded driver or the Omega. I've also noticed programs boot and run slightly quicker since I put the new HD in. If you can learn to use Rightmark CPU well, you'll find there's definitely some room for improving your sytems performance. I also dumped Vista Home Premium for XP pro within a week of getting this laptop as I think it is a useless load of bloatware, as is anything by Norton or McAfee which will definitely affect performance; all they do is take over your system and slow it down. I noticed a marked improvement in performance with Windows XP pro which is whats in there now.
