I have cable internet and using the ethernet it disconnects every 30 minutes. There is a problem with my nic, is there a way to replace it? I have warranty but it will take more than two weeks for repair. Any help, please?![]()

It looks more likely to be a software problem than a hardware one. I do not know what it could be, however you could take some steps:
a) LAN driver reinstall
b) Windows clean install
If all else fails and you don't want to send it in repairs, you could just get a wireless router. -
sergi, You may want to contact your provider.
-
Thanks guys, i'll check these options. I contacted my internet provider, they checked the lines, changed the modem and everything was fine. Then, a week ago I connected two computers to my cable modem and they were working fine, so my laptop has the problem.
do you think its safer to send the laptop to asus repair for this problem? -
Not sure what you mean by "safer". It is safe to do software attempts to fix the problem yourself. What you do when you RMA, is you trade off time that you spend personally trying to fix the issue, with downtime for the computer. Depending on how much you value each of these two types of time, you may be better off trying to RMA.
Personally, I would try to eliminate or fix any software issues, first. -
I reinstalled drivers. It did not work. Probably, I am using the wrong drivers...
My driver version is Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC 5.680.1023.2007
where can i get a working ethernet driver? -
Sergi, as a temporary solution you may consider something like this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812203024 -
I have Windows XP Professional SP2. The ethernet was working fine two months ago, now it keeps dropping every 30 minutes. Very annoying.
-
Thanks m8. I know that i can use it or wireless. The point if is there is a problem with my nic, it can escalate to other hardware.
-
I think you have hardware issue. NIC is part of MoBo so if your warranty expired it can be costly
-
Not on all computers, sometimes it's on a removable board (but rarely, indeed). A disassembly manual will tell more, or a search on the ASUS eStore.
As to whether a hardware defect (if it is that, we don't know for sure yet) can escalate/propagate to other components -- it very much depends on the type of defect, I guess. I would also guess that most types of defects will not propagate. -
I hope xp pro don't void the warranty.
-
I'll reinstall windows today. I hope it fix the problem.
BTW, About the warranty...
Can i send the laptop with Windows Xp Pro Sp2? no problem with that?
-
I don't think they'll have a problem. In the worst case they will recover the default Vista image, so be careful to back up your data!!
(And no, different OS should not void warranty, since the warranty covers the hardware, to which the OS is (in a first approximation) irrelevant.) -
Thanks for you answer E.B.E.
By the way, I noticed that most laptops such as Dell and HP, when the ethernet is used it has a light on in the socket. In my ASUS F3ka there is no light.. -
There's no light on either of my laptops, as well.
-
Seems like the connection is okay, I suggest you to reset your modem for a day. If that's not the issue, I would recommend you to find a way to find out what is wrong with your LAN connection.
-
What do you mean "reset the modem for a day"?
-
How i can know my nic is not working ok? I checked the cable modem with another laptop and it did not disconnect. I reinstalled drivers, the hardware is working fine in the drivers detail, but nothing fixed. The cable technician came and checked the lines and cable modem and he told me he didn't find any problem with my connection and probably my computer have the problem. Maybe compatablity between the nic and the cable modem?
Is the Realtek NIC part of the mobo? there are no parts for the F3Ka laptops in the ASUS eStore. -
I reset many times (not for a day.) It did not solve the problem.
The logs of my cable modem, every time disconnects and reconnects I receive the IGMP error multicast. -
One other thing I can suggest is to try running the notebook in Live Linux for a day or so. Use the network. If it does not disconnect, then the problem most likely lies with Windows/drivers. If it does disconnect, it's most likely hardware -- or BIOS, but that's less likely.
I don't know if the LAN card is integrated on the mainboard... probably it is.
