I have a new Asus F6V and when I close the lid it will go into standby but will not resume when I open the lid unless I press a key!! I have a Dell and HP laptops that will resume from standby automatically upon opening the lid

I have tried this using Vista and Winxp SP3 and it is the same

    thanks for the help :)

I normally leave my laptop to do nothing when the lid is closed so it resumes normally when I open it again.

Just been playing around with the settings and my laptop does the same thing as well, opening the lid doesn't resume it from standby. I have experimented with this on the ASUS W7S and it too, did the same thing.

Maybe it was designed like this on all the ASUS laptops? Personally it doesn't really matter to me but I can imagine it can cause a reaction to some people.

Yes this is by design. Macs tend to resume from sleep when you open them (by default configuration... [if I remember correctly, it's been a while]). You can click the mouse or hit a key to resume from standby on a pc. There is no way I know of to resume by just opening the lid (using windows power profiles - notice the lack of a 'lid open' action), although I'm sure it's possible with some sort of (OEM or 3rd party) software since there is a sensor.

it seems that it is just like that by design

Actually, I have a Lenovo T61 that resumes just by opening the screen cover without any issues. It works just like the macs. I'm not exactly sure how is it any different, but on my Asus U6, I have to press the power on button to resume. I'll have to look into this a little more

See my post above. It's not an asus thing, it's a windows thing. You need OEM or extra software to interpret the hardware signal for opening the lid. It's pretty simple, some manufacturers preload software to do that, most don't, asus being one of the latter.
