    Hey guys,

I just got a new ASUS F8 and am setting it up.

I was wondering which programs they preinstall on here that I don't need. I just want to clean it up before I get it going.

    Thanks!

Clean install. And then choose the programs that you do need.

asus update skype and norton must go

i disagree from personal recent experience it is much faster to uninstall the programs that reformat.
I think this is actually just lazy thinking.

There's always going to be some advantage to reinstalling cleanly, rather than uninstalling bloatware. Whether that advantage is large enough to justify the extra time spent... I don't know :) It's up to everybody to decide on their own.

A caveat regarding Adobe PDF. With FoxIt you won't be able to open PDFs inside the browser (which I use quite a lot). That;s the only reason for which I stuck with Adobe Reader. I use an older version though, 6.0, the newer ones give WAAY to much crashes when combined with Mozilla Firefox (I'm not sure why they don't fix those ugly bugs...)

As to MS Office... I don't use it almost at all anymore, these days...

Firstly I want to confess that I'm 'open office' user and do not like BIG NAMES (Microsoft is not exception)

    Now back to OFFICE
There are several researches about comparison of 2 OFFICES that indicate:
open office uses more CPU and RAM to complete the same task.
    there is one of them

I'd try both to figure out what I like and what I need

Foxit works fine for me in that regard.

And I to do not use MS Office enough to purchase it. But there are so many files/links where it's needed that a free office app that will allow file types to be opened/viewed/edited is nice.

Wasn't there once , a long , long time ago where Adobe PDF did just that...allowed .pdf files to be viewed without taking over one's system & using all its resources ? :)

I uninstalled just about every asus item that came on the system - under startup the only things I have running are:
    1) Windows Defender (you only need this if you use it)
    2) ATKOSD2 - runs your hot buttons
    3) Synaptics pointing device
    4) Avira Antivir (antivirus)
    5) Nvidia display driver

That's it. I took off the asus security, wireless console, liveupdate, etc.

I have Defender disabled for real time checking but enabled to do a "full system scan" early in the morning when I'm not using notebook.

Is Defender that bad that it should be on the complete disable list ? It's the only thing I have running for that type of checking (spyware).

It depends on who you ask and always comes down to personal preference. Windows defender has real time protection (although it's quality is debated, from what I've read it's adequate at best), has a small memory footprint, and can be a good alternate spyware checker if you like to use more then one.

My main spyware program is Spybot, but it's ability to catch new spyware has been dropping as of late - so I run them both from time to time. I'm not sure what the best product on the market is, although hopefully it wont matter; I havent had any spyware or viruses pop up on my old laptop or this one.

Yeah either have I so I figured why fix it if it aint broke. That's what I look at a lot more these days..."memory footprint". But I guess I really should be a little more concerned about how these things work overall.

But I guess no news is good news.

I use to be a big fan of SPYBOT s&d for several years and it became slightly boring.
About 8 months ago I switched to COMODO spyware software and have no regrets. I like simplicity of interface (it does not exist) and reliability of software.
Recently under the influence of this forum I've installed latest version of SPYBOT again and after checkup I was congratulated for not having any problems. I think the whole credit to be addressed to COMODO.
SPYBOT has some nice utilities (settings, tools, and so on) but there is other free software around (Glary for instance) I believe I can live without SPYBOT.
What about Windows defender, I had some issues with it on my kids notebooks (windows XP).
