Finally received my F9S and, as promised, I am doing a quick write up on instaling XP on it.
I have owned 2 A8 series laptops from Asus, so most of my comparisons are against those machines. Upon inspection, the F9S appears to be built better than the A8 laptops. There is virtually no flex in the lid or keyboard. It feels very solid yet lighter than the other laptops. It is smaller, but exactly as thick as the A8 laptops. There is no latch on the lid, it just kind of rests on the bottom part when you close it. The revolving camera does kind of stick out a bit from the top and looks like it may break off easily. I am going to have to be careful about that when putting it in and taking it out of its bag. The buttons on the touchpad were perfect; way softer and easier to click than the ones on the A8 laptops. Overall, it appears quite a bit more professional than the A8 laptops. However, I really don't like the fact that Asus covered it with stickers on the palm rests. They look really cheesy. I will be removing those huge stickers once everything is up and running.
Upon receiving it I upgraded the RAM with another stick of 1GB DDR2, making 2GB total. When I removed the component cover on the back, I noticed the CPU, the RAM, and the HD were easily accessible. I did not see the wireless nic card, so that may be under the keyboard. I hope its not too difficult to get to because I was interested in upgrading it to Intel's latest wireless card. I'm not too worried about that right now. I tried booting it after upgrading the RAM and it launched right into the Vista OOBE setup. At this time I noticed that the screen appeared much brighter and higher in contrast than my A8 laptops. I cancelled out of it since I was now going to load XP on it.
Before starting the XP setup, I checked for BIOS updates and found version 205 with a note on it about "allowing user to install XP" on it. So, I figured I better install that before trying to install XP on it. I put the bios on my bootable usb stick and proceeded with the update. The update went fine and after rebooting, I entered the BIOS to ensure boot from CD was enabled. While in the BIOS, I noticed that the vent on the left side of the laptop was blowing out REALLY hot air. Good thing this vent is not on the right side where I usually have my mouse.
I put in a bootable XP SP2 CD and launched into the setup. First issue: the windows setup did not detect any hard drives. Must be the SATA Operation Mode in the BIOS. I changed this from "Enhanced" to "Compatible" then relaunched the XP setup. This time the windows setup detected the hard drive and all the various partitions that come from the factory just fine. I deleted the partitions and created some to my own liking. Windows XP installed fine, and pretty quickly.

First thing I did was to install the following XP Hotfixes:
KB888111 - Intel HD Audio support for XP
KB896256 - Dual Core hotfix for XP
KB918005 - ACPI Power Saving hotfix for USB
Now it was time to install all the necessary drivers...

Issues
I cannot get Fn+F9 to disable the touchpad as it should. Does anybody have an idea about this? This would be a really useful feature, but I'm guessing it is only supported in Vista. I have tried the latest Synaptics driver and the latest ATK0100 driver. I can get the touchpad to disable when I plug in a USB mouse via the Synaptics driver, yet Fn+F9 seems to do nothing at all. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Other than the issues mentioned, I am happy to report that everything is functioning perfectly!

Cool, thanks for the quick guide, especially the drivers link. I'm still not decided between the F9S, U3S and U6S.
-
If you can afford it, I would go for a U6S. Otherwise, go for the F9S.
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Keep in mind that the entire U series does not come with internal optical drive - you have to purchase the external dvd drive separately @ $140 or so.
Edit:
I stand corrected by ra990 - the U3 and U1 are optical drive-free. My apologies. CS -

thanks. i just need to sell my other 2 notebooks then i can buy the f9s
-
so from what you are saying that you can't install XP with the BIOS on board but u can if u get version 205 of the bios?
and a link to the BIOs if the case please? -
ra990, I would disagree with you on the F9-S being well-built.
The case seems that it can be easily pulled apart, because of the plastic quality. Even though harder and sturdier plastic may make the notebook heavy by about .2-.3 lbs, I'd be willing to make that sacrifice. However, for its class and price range, the F9S is without a doubt the most powerful ultraportable notebook you can find.
Also, to definetly prolong the service and life of the F9S, I'd highly recommend getting a cooling pad for the notebook. I've seen that when both cores are being utilized at more than 95% each, then the temperature boosts up to 80+ degrees celsius.
Also, what RAM did you use to upgrade it? Was it the 200 pin so-dimm PC 5300? Cause I'm looking to upgrade it to 2 GBs. Also, in order to access the CPU and RAM, etc. you need to take off the 5 screws on the bottom part of the laptop and take off the whole panel, right? I've never done upgrading on a notebook before, so if its not too much to ask, can you also put in a tutorial on adding a stick of RAM?
Thanks! -
omni, I think a tutorial for putting in RAM would be overkill. It really is as simple as taking off the component cover by removing the screws (all visible and accessible), then popping in the stick of RAM in the empty slot, which also happens to be on top, so you don't have to touch the other stick. Really very simple.
Also, on the F9S being well-built...I am coming from the A8 series, which were really poorly built, so it is definitely a step-up for me. I have been really tempted to buy a U6S and ebay this brand new F9S though...something about that U6S. I'll have to take a look at them once they are widely released.
urbanstereo, you can install XP on it without the latest bios, but then you would need to slipstream the SATA drivers on the XP CD. The new bios can be found on Asus' download page for the F9S. -
Try reinstalling the hotkey driver. And in your guide since you mentioned Synaptics as optional, I suppose you didn't install it. That driver is actually necessary to support the Fn+F9 feature.
And I agree with Omni, the plastics does feel a bit cheaper compared to my M5. But I think it's a industry trend, since Lenovo went the same downfall with the latest Thinkpads. The T60s were nowhere near the old T42s -
I did install the synaptics driver as well as a few versions of the ATK driver in my quest to get Fn+F9 to work in XP. Didn't work though...

One other problem with XP is if you put 3GB RAM on F9S it will not able to install video card driver, F3SA has same issue but fixed with BIOS 204:
F3SA BIOS 204
1. Fix VGA device will disappear under winXP when system installs DRAM over 3G.
So if you are going to install XP on F9S don't upgrade to 3GB RAM for now, next BIOS update should fix this problem. -
To GenTechPc:
Actually, the F9S cannot utilize anything above 2 GBs of RAM no matter what OS you are using. -
Also, I got my Fn+F9 issue figured out! I had to install the Asus ATK OSD2 utility to get it to work. I now have like 4 asus programs at startup just to control buttons and lights. That's pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I have had plenty of other laptops where function keys, media buttons, and led indicators all worked without the need for any extra software. ATK driver, ATK OSD Utility, ATK OSD2 Utility, Wireless Console 2...are all those really necessary? Asus needs to get their act together with regards to this and just release one utility that takes care of all this.
Now that my touch pad is being disabled as it should with the ATK OSD2 utility, I have come across a new problem...on boot up, my webcam lights up and stays on. I guess that utility is somehow messing with the webcam and I cannot get the lights to turn off. They're extremely bright, and drain valuable battery life. For now, I have just disabled the webcam from device manager. Any ideas on this? -
I contacted Asus in regards to XP drivers for the F9S.
I got a reply saying that they are not sure of the ETA for the XP drivers.
I'm assuming that they will be coming up with something, but nothing within the next month or so :-/ -
