I recently purchased an ASUS G1 laptop and cannot figure out how to turn off the microphone. It picks up every noise and often has a piercing, high pitch noise when I am too near it. Is there a way to turn the microphone on and off?

Also, I went into the sounds settings in control panel. Under the "recording" tab, I thought that disabling the line in (not the Realtek High Def. Audio) would turn off the microphone, but it just deleted it from my options. Any idea how to get this to turn back on?

After a quick call to tech support (very friendly, and helpful), I figured out how to fix both problems.

Turning off the microphone does involve a few steps, but since I won't be using the built in mic often, I'm okay with this. They are outlined here:

    1. Right click the volume icon in the Quick Launch menu.
    2. Choose Playback devices.
    3. On the Playback tab, right click Speakers and choose Properties.
    4. Under the Levels tab, left click the speaker icon next to the Microphone volume bar. This will mute the microphone.

To re-enable the line-in item I had disabled, I did the following steps:

    1. Repeat step 1 from above.
    2. Select Recording Devices.
    3. Right click anywhere in the white box.
    4. Choose "Show Disabled Devices".

This allows the item, and a couple of others to be seen and enabled.

    Hope this helps you, too!

yeah, it is a little confusing but I figured this out on my own.

make SURE you have the newest drivers too...that helped me.
