Over at adsinput, where they post the weekly ads for various stores, they posted this excerpt from the Best Buy ad for this week:
![]()
The curious thing to me is that they mention this as $150 off of a regular price of $1799..... yet at least right now, Best Buy is listing the G1 as $1999 on their site.
So I'm sort of curious about this. Is Best Buy dropping the price back to $1799 and then doing a further discount on top of that?
-Zadillo
-
That's what it seems like. THe bottom says "regular price $1799"
-
I guess it will be clearer in a few hours when Best Buy's site updates for the current week, if they update the G1 price to reflect this. Wondering if this is a regional thing or not (I haven't seen the print copy of my local Best Buy ad).
Seems like a nice price for a G1 though, although I wonder if this also indicates a move to push remaining stock out the door to make way for the inevitable Santa Rosa update to the G1 line.
EDIT: OK, that's interesting. Just checked again at bestbuy.com and it is now showing up at $1799 (had shown as $1999 only a few minutes ago). I don't think they would have updated it yet to reflect the $150 savings though. -
Wow quite a good deal if BB follows through with the deal...
-
That is a nice deal. A G1p for $1650 would have me sold if I were looking right now.
-
Yeah, it's interesting. The weekly ad is online now, and it is a real deal. Oddly though, the website is still not reflecting the discounted price (it is still at $1799, not $1649).
But I would assume if you walked into your local Best Buy (one that stocked the G1), there'd be no problem getting it at that price. -
This is normal for BB where the website and local pricing didn't match. The bottom line is the local db system usually match the ads price. It's almost like one way to force the customer to be in the store in case they want to pick up something else while they there.
My G1 is not 30 days yet. I guess I will go in today for a price adjustment. hehehe... -
*** i just obught my ASUS A8js!! *** for around 1600

x31234 there really isn't a major difference. =/

I hate rip off uk.
That price is around £400 cheaper than the cheapest Uk price, or $800 cheaper than I can get it for here.
Its not a little bit of money. I could get a PS3 and a G1 if I lived in the US with that kind of money. -
They raised the price, just to give a discount. It's a trick
-
Is it just me, or did no one have this deal in their BB flier in the paper?
-
-Zadillo -
check out the samsung x60 though its cheaper over there than over here. g1 is just too expensive in the uk because you can literally buy a flight to canada or the us for that
the uk asus dealers have got some real capitolism going on because you can certainly go to germany and buy it reasonably. -
-
wow that's cheap... does it still come with all the freebies, though? i've read somewhere (i believe) that the deal was pretty good but it didn't came with backpack, mouse etc...
-
-
Also 1 year less warranty, so BB can pressure you to get a PSP
-
-
also as ive said before, because BB has extreme buying power they are able to but products from manufacturers that are made just for their own markets.
No bag, no mouse and 1 yr warranty only explains this.
Look at the G1 model number they use (G1-AK020C-B)
All other G1's ive seen so far are model numbered: G1-AK024C -
It isn't like they raised the price and then offered a "discount" to put it back to the original price. -
Its also not fair for BB to state the pricing of the G1 that everyone else is selling which includes 2yr warranty, the napsack and the mouse.
The BB G1 version is totally different and shouldnt be compared at all.
BestBuys listing of the initial pricing of 1999/1799 is silently fooling people to perceive that BB's G1 is the same when it isnt.
Just look at all the comments on thsi thread already. They initially think the BB g1 is the same G1 you would buy from any other auth Asus dealer -
-
well I just bought one of the BB G1's... so far so good. Although I did return the first one i had because the keys on the left side of the keyboard didn't feel right. They sort of clunked when you pushed them and the keys on the right side didn't do it?! Anyways, the second G1 is better but still does it.
Am in the middle of a upgrade to Vista Ultimate now. -
The new price is up. Though with the lack of backpack, mouse, no lightscribe, and only a 1 year warranty it doesn't seem like a good price at all when tax is added. Might as well buy online IMO.
-
-
I agree. I actually had thought about purchasing a G1 from a local best buy if only to have the opportunity to return it if something was wrong with the inital unit. I am also a teacher, so tax would not be a problem.

That is good price. The closest price to that is from http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=Asus_G1&Category_Code=
at $1795. I compared all prices with the discounts to make it a fair comparison. The Gentech price includes a backpack and optical mouse, but I can buy both for these for $50. The 2 year warranty is only useful if it includes accidental coverage and the standard 2 year ASUS warranty does not include it. I recommend buying the G1 from Best Buy and saving $145. -

Drive to your local Best Buy and no shipping is needed. Most states require sales tax on internet items even if you do not pay them at the time of purchase. So sales tax factors into the equation either way and Best Buy also saves money on shipping.

You are all missing the point. Best buy does not have them at all. Neither do most resellers. You will only find but a few resellers that actually have them available to ship
-
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
True. 6 Best Buy stores and none of them have the ASUS G1 in stock. However, I can call the Best Buy near my house and make a request. Best Buy will have one sent to them and I can pick it up for no additional cost.
-
I'm not sure what point is being missed?
EDIT: Or is just the point that stock in general of the G1 is getting thin, and Best Buy has lowered their prices to clear out any remaining stock to make way for a Santa Rosa update of the G1? -

Guess they just got them in then. They didnt have them at all for the better part of this month. The price was 1999$ and shipping was stated 1-2 weeks.
-
You are right, they didn't seem to be available at all for a while ("out of stock" online and in almost all stores).
I guess Best Buy is also experimenting with price points, etc. too.

I think there are a few things people should ask.
1. bag and mouse is known to be missing
2. warranty as stated on best buy is only 1 year.
3. burner says nothing about lightscribe then again who cares about light scribe
The weight is 7.1lbs
@1650$ that price is unbeatable however when you compound the tax most people would pay the price for what you get is not good. -
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
2. I am not interested in warranties that lack accidental coverage. Extending a standard warranty from 1-2 years is not a big improvement.
3. The Best Buy site quotes the weight at 6.8 pounds.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8246999&st=G1&type=product&id=1168045345063
Most states require taxes paid on all internet purchases at the time of purchase or on your tax form. I always pay my taxes.
-
I think the main thing is just that it's at least not so bad a deal as it once was..... as I mentioned above, $1650 + tax for what BB is selling is a lot better than $1999.
Here in virginia, with tax it comes out to $1732. Generally speaking this isn't a terrible price compared to the $1899 price online for the G1 (I know there are discounts, of course).
If I were looking to buy a G1, I would weight whether it was worth saving $100-150 or so. Honestly I probably wouldn't care so much about the bag or the mouse, but the warranty is an issue.
I think this is all probably besides the point. As I see it, the main good thing here is just that Best Buy is even carrying a laptop like this. One of the big problems I've had with Best Buy, CompUSA, CircuitCity, etc. is that they generally seem to carry pretty boring lower-end laptops - the closest thing I've seen to a high-end laptop at these stores is usually something like Toshiba's $2000 P105 gaming laptops with the GeForce 7900GS. But walking into a typical Best Buy, it's usually a ton of HP, Gateway and Toshiba laptops with some Acer and Sony laptops thrown in too.
As PROportable pointed out, it's also generally good for Asus to be getting the exposure like this; it seems like there are still people out there who don't recognize the Asus brandname, and I think seeing it in person at stores will help a lot.
Even for people who do plan on buying online, it's nice to be able to check models out in person.
I think ultimately some people are still more comfortable being able to just walk into a Best Buy and buy a laptop, without any shipping or anything like that, so for those people, it's also good they'll have the option. -
All u buyers should put more emphases on the OEM warranty that comes with the Asus laptops or any products for that matter.
The manufacturers warranty is more/less the showing of 'confidence' on the product its selling.
If you bought a toaster with a 25yr warranty believe me, that'll be the best toaster you'll ever own.
Also a longer warranty increases the resale value of the product. Since i dont keep my laptops more than 2 yrs the Asus warranty fits perfectly in my trade cycle.
The fact that the BB G1 only has a 1yr warranty means that the true wholesale cost for BB to buy it from Asus is much lower.
And it wouldnt surprise me if the actual 1yr warranty will be performed by the GeekSquad repair facility. Its not hard these days to stock a few of the manufacturers parts and obtain all their repair microfisch and then obtain the 'authorized Asus" repair facility tag. -
Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite
All manufacturers sell products with warranties and about 1% of manufactures honor their warranties. After reading reviews and posts written by laptop owners that include all laptops manufactures, none provide a good warranty. Since I was a mechanic, I can say Craftsman warranties are the best. Sears will replace any tool broken for any reason with a lifetime warranty. This does not include any power or pneumatic tool. Mechanics have taken in tools older than I am and Sears replaced them. Obviously no laptop manufacture could offer this kind of warranty, but manufactures should attempt to treat their customers with respect.

For those that care, it appears you can also get C&C3 for free if you get the laptop.

The V1JP costs about the same or more than a G1, whilst the X60 costs about £1500 -
-
Ive seen the samsung x60 for 1000 pounds or less than 2000 us dollars.
-
Guys what is the average tax put on to a purchase in the US? Does it change per state?
-
It varies but i would say most states its around 6%
a few states have 0 sales tax for instance oregon. There are about 4
cali and ny are around 8% -
Ah ok, on that basis I think it's relevant for all people outside of the US, please factor in an extra 6% as an average when comparing prices across the pond.
