What do you like/dislike about your G1? Share your opinions. Any tips/extras/interesting facts welcome!
It's amazing how I can go into a game, and put all the graphics on HIGH with the highest resolution and actually play the game! From there I adjust my settings a bit lower for best playability. Really amazing graphics! (I use to have a A6000 series laptop with Geforce 7300)
I like the OLED display. When your playing games, it warns you when battery is low (where usually my previous laptop would just go into hibernate without warning me when I am actually in the game). Also incoming/outcoming Skype calls shows on OLED display. Something different, cool little "gadget" I must say.
I actually have NO dislikes.
Only thing that's a bit slow is when you do a new install with 2 recovery cds, plus the driver cd. But most (if not all) Asus laptops are like that. I remember with my Toshiba M50 I only had one recovery CD, and was MUCH quicker to re-install everything compared to 1 and a half hours.
-
won't go into likes cuz i'm sure we all have the same ones
the only dislikes i can think of is that the lid and wrist pad smudges easily (though I have already fixed that with a clear plastic wrap, so now it's PERFECT)
oh and i could live with a quieter keyboard
otherwise... seriously, it's cool (looking and temperature wise), awesome and sexy -
Likes : speed of processor / graphicscard / looks / batery life for the amount of hardware installed.
Dislikes : only blinking of the lights when playing dx9 games. amount of bloatware installed. very slow bootup time even after cleaningup bloatware. Build in speakers are a joke.
Very small little dislikes tho.machine is great. games run very smoothly. i am starting to use the G1 as the replacment for my desktop so decided to get a cooling pad due to the fact it will sit more often on my desk then moving it around. -
yeah i know... i just wish they did more then just blink.
-
If you play in a dark room with no lights, it tends to put me off a bit yeah, then I just disable the lights.
I agree with the bloatware, but no problem removing it.
Regarding the speakers, I had the same prob with my previous A6000, but I fixed that with software that Asus provided [here's how]. But does not look like the G1 comes with the same. -
Do you guys use your standard drivers (8.6.0.2) for your Geforce 7700 graphics card?
I have installed the latest drivers from laptopvideo2go.com (9792), but it does not work at all. It seems fine until I want to play any game, it then says no graphic device detected.
Anyone tried other drivers that works, and maybe see a difference?
My drivers works prefectly, actually no need to get "better" drivers, but for interest, have you used any other drivers? -

Overall the laptop just like many owners like it, is it all round fun to use, performs well, looks interesting, and the features are interesting to use.
There are only a few things that I don't like, the glossy finish makes it prone to scratches. The overall design is appealing, but the V1JP chasis design looks sleeker. And lastly I would have like to get rid of the lights and add a thinner, sleeker chasis design to make more appealing all round. However this doesn't mean it isn't appealing to everyone, because many here love the design. -
I love it, turned off the lights and the smudges and uber dust-attraction doesn't really bother me in the grand scheme of things. The speakers suck but I play games with the sound low anyway or with my headset on.
It's fast, it runs cool, the screen makes me drool, and I'll stop there because I just love it. -
My only dislikes are that its delicate...i've already scratched the top cover, i always have to clean it (but kinda fun cleaning such a sexy laptop) and the keyboard flexes up top
less plastic would be nice & they could've made it thinner
i want a 9 cell battery already too
other than that it's fantastic...a sweet 3D05 of 5000 and after removing bloatware and repartitioning the HD its got speed and seemingly endless storage
CS:S, Oblivion and HL2 & HL2: DM, all at 1680x1050, run flawless -
The screen is the best bit for me it is special.
I don't like the speakers - these could have been better. -

I love EVERYTHING about the notebook except for the glossy finish...it's so...dirtable....
It's even a word. I have to clean constantly.
Anyway, the screen definitely is something to die for.
It is easy to overclock, producing not so much heat. -

m477hew: What drivers did you use to get the 5k 3dmrak05 score?

CAn you guys share with me how you remove the bloatware? Is it all just simply uninstalling the crap?
Mines coming in the mail... -
This will answer your question:

I'm still a month or two (possibly 3) away from buying a G1 but from what I hear you can't do much better for the price and size. I guess I will have to keep drooling at the pictures on the review until I order one

Am I better off getting the Windows MCE version over the one with Vista pre-installed? It *is* $100 cheaper, and comes with a free upgrade later on. I'm a little worried about some gaming performance I'm hearing with Vista, since it isn't as stable is it probably will be in a few months.

Overall I wouldn't advise using Vista for such a high performance laptop, unless your not going to be gaming, but rather use the G1 as a normal tasks laptop, then it wouldn't hurt to use Vista to see the new interface.
Basically gaming on Vista will put a damper on your performance, you can easily see this form the reviews here and from other sources which you can easily google. "XP versus Vista". -
Definitely put this in the wrong thread, but thank you for the incredibly fast response.

The first screenshot shows a big brown geometric shape, and the second shows green squares on the terrain.
Any help would be appreciated!

It would be cool if the lights served as a notification system. For example, the lights could blink a few times if you get a new email or IM. Maybe turn different colors indicating battery life, etc. They have a lot of potential, too bad they serve a pretty useless purpose.

Stoked - I play WOW fine with the original drivers on my G1. I'm at work so I can't check which they are, but I will look it up this evening and post. How do you get a temp reading for the gfx card? Let me know and I will check this as well.
-
-
If you're using the original driver, you can right-click on the desktop and go to Nvidia Display. From there you can click on one of the options from the tree and it will tell you the GPU temp. I upgraded to the 97.28 driver yesterday and it didn't help solve the issue. I actually got an error 132 message when WoW crashed. Another time I got BSOD which really sucked. I also noticed that my CPU performance seems to be running pretty high when playing as well. I am currently using Nvidia Monitor to monitor CPU and GPU performance. Also, the GPU temp was getting to 68 degrees Celsius when playing last night.
Below are my current settings when playing WoW. I am also using the Titan Panel addon. Can you post your settings so I can see the difference?
WoW Settings:
DISPLAY:
Resolution: 1400 x 900 Wide
Refresh: 60Hz
Multisample: 24 bit 2x multisample
UI Scale: Checked
World Appearance:
Terrain Distance: Medium

Smooth Shading: Unchecked
Weather Shaders: Checked
Miscellaneous:

Any help is greatly appreciated. If anyone else is running WoW on a G1, please share your experience and if you are having any issues.
Thanks! -
Something else I noticed is when the textures get all out of wack, I can tab out of WoW and come back into WoW and they are ok until the next time it happens. Normally, I repeat this several times a night when playing.

I have a quick question, is it possible to get a docking station for the G1?
Thanks -
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
Sorry not docking station port available for the G1, like the one that the V1JP and V2 use.
There are other types of docking stations available like the Kensington, like this Click Here and Here -

i have the G1 with vista preinstalled and burned a dvdr and then flipped it and burned a lightscribe thing on top...
its like a brown thing with no color so i think its overrated... but its definitly there...
when you install the nero cd it comes with... it puts a little link on your desktop telling you what to do... and you can use nero cover designer to make lightscribe discs... -
Yup, It does have LightScribe...I have one.
Also, regarding gaming, 3dmark05 and 06 resulted in near identical results in XP and Vista. HL2 Lost Cost did show a 20% drop in Vista if AA or AF was turned on. (nVidia 100.59)

The new G1-AK024C is equipped with Lightscribe. Vista Home Premium and Lightscribe were the only two changes from the old G1 w/ MCE.
-
Oh booo, I dont want vista, not on my laptop that is
is Vista a must now? or can you get the G1 without it, but with the Lightscribe?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
unfortunately asus is no longer providing the older model with MCE. They are forcing customers to go to Vista.
-
Does www.XoticPC.com still carry the MCE versions?
-
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
i am sorry no we dont, we just sold the last one the other day
-
Bummer...I wonder how the whole Vista experience will affect gaming and load times etc etc, or will it?
-
well thanks for clarifying the Lightscribe thing guys...don't know why Asus told me the contrary????....now, where can i get a replacement drive that has lightscribe capability?
-
Hey G1 owners.
I have a dilema...
I can not decide between the G1 and the Asus A8Js.
I love the look of the G1, but it looks so glossy and pretty that something is bound to scratch it. Can anyone tell me how tough this thing is? I have a psp, and that **** thing will get a scratch on it by just using it.
I am thinking I should buy the A8Jp (With similar/same specs) because it looks alot more durable but I really like the look of the G1. I don't care about it getting dirty, I don't mind cleaning an awesome gaming rig, I jsut don't want it covered in scratches in one year.
Can anyone convince me that it is safe to buy the G1. It looks like an awesome setup.
Any input would be great.
Thank you. -
it is safe, but u need to add some stuff. i've added a clear piece of plastic (adhesive) to protect the lid and the wrist pad area and it's now PERFECT
-
Read through both pages of this thread for info:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=102879 -
im really careful with it.... like reallllllllllllly careful... but i dont have any noticable scratches...
-
Good to hear.
Thanks for the help. I think I will go with the G1. -
The A8Jp is like... $500 cheaper though...
-
About protecting the G1's lid. There is something called Plexus that is used to protect and polish plastics (motorcycle helmets, fairings, & even Sony PSPs) I used it on my XPS M170 (also a very scratch prone lid) and it has worked great.
I plan to use it when I get my G1 (hopefully next week) -
I'm thinking about buying this laptop already...
my last question are...
1.are the keyboard comfortable for gaming?since this will be my 1st time gaming at laptop
2.is it thin enough?
3.is it good looking? -
1. yes
2. subjective. search for the dimensions and see if it's thin enough for you, we don't know wot's 'enough' to your standards?
3. subjective. search for the pictures and see if it's sexy enough for you, again, we don't know wot's 'sexy' to your standards. i mean, i find lucy liu friggin' sexy, but my girlfriend doesn't
