That's the stuff. If you plan to use it on a notebook only (as opposed to a motorcycle, etc.) , I'd recommend the pocket spray instead of the full blown aerosol can.

Be warned, it isn't magic. Treat is like Wax, it protects but you can't go dragging your car keys on the lid after application. It helps to re-apply occasionally as well.

Does the new Vista G1 still have the same CMO1523 screen? Can anyone verify? My husband likes mine and I think I'm going to have to order one for him. I doubt I can find the XP version anymore.

From what I have read all specs on the refresh G1 are the same except for OS(Vista vice XP MCE) and DVDRW drive(Lightscribe drive vice non-Lightstcribe drive).

That's right, the G1 got a small refresh with Vista Home Premium and a 8x Super Multi DVD Burner with Light Scribe. But also costs $100. In my opinion is it sort of worth it since you don't have to do the Windows Upgrade Progam and if you like/need lightscribe, then that's great.

Other than that the XP version is still great.

Yeah, I wish I would have done a tad more research into the different revisions of G1s as I thought I was getting one with Lightscribe, but ah well....such is life. I have an external HP DVDRW w/lightscribe I can use if I need it.....

Does the 2nd Gen(Vista) G1 ship with the latest drivers? I'm looking on the Asus website, and there are 26 updates released on 25th and 26th of January. I'm highly considering doing a clean install as soon as mine arrives in the mail, just to avoid the whole bloatware deal. I know there's a driver's thread up top, but it is pretty vague with regards to what they do. Anyone care to explain them? A lot of em are pretty obvious, but I can't pinpoint a lot of them.

Maxamilus, sure, I would recommend doing a clean install of Vista, but first play around with it, learn it, enjoy it, and then figure out what you wanna keep and what you don't want to keep.

Then do a clean install of Vista with all the knowledge you have.

Just a quick recap on what these are and if they are needed

AFLASH2_Vista32bit_070125.zip - flash bios, keep it
    ATKDrv_Vista32bit_070126.zip - you need it
    ATKMedia_Vista32bit_070125.zip - keep it
ATKOSD2_Vista32bit_070125.zip - On screen display, keep it
    AUDIO_Vista32_64_070125.zip - keep it
ChkMail_Vista32bit_070125.zip - not many use it, doesn't hurt boot time, your choice
    DirectConsole_Visat32bit_070126.zip - keep it
    eSATA_Vista32_64_070126.zip - keep it
    INFUpdate_Vista32bit_070125.zip - keep it
    LAN_Vista32_64_070125.zip - keep it
LifeFrame2_Vista32bit_070125.zip - This uses your Webcam, its just a program you may be able to find other better ones
Liveupdate_Vista32bit_070125.zip - NO, don't install, lol, no one uses it
Modem_Vista32_64_070125.zip - install but remove from start up (msconfig)
MultiFrame_Vista32bit_070125.zip - Nice program allows for Window Manipulations, like having 4 symetrical windows open at once.
    NB_Probe_Vista32bit_070125.zip - keep it
    Net4Switch_Vista32bit_070125.zip - useless, ur choice
    P4GIIX_Vista32bit_070125.zip - keep it
    PowerForPhone_Vista32bit_070125.zip - for VOIP users
RICOH_Vista32bit_070125.zip - Card Reader drivers, keep it
    Robson_Vista32_64_070126.zip - keep it
Splendid_Vista32bit_070125.zip - You can press FN + C to change themes, kind of cool depending on what your doing,
    TouchPad_Vista32_64_070125.zip - keep it
VGA_Vista32bit_070125(2).zip - Video card drivers, a must keep
WinFlash_Vista32bit_070125.zip - flash through windows, keep it
    WLAN_Vista32bit_070125.zip - keep it
W_Console_Vista32bit_070125.zip - keep it, allows for the buttons and light for Wireless connectivity to work, bluetooth and WIFI.

I hope this answers pretty much everything, if you still have questions please ask.

the person I bought the laptop from said that it came with wxga and 1280x800 resolution and the website at asus also said that it's either wsxga or wxga.Is this really possible or maybe my vendor just got the wrong item?

The G1 screen is different from country to country. This website is predominantly North American, if your not in NA, you can still use this website as a great resource, however when it comes to purchasing a notebook. Please check your local reseller if the specs match or some close to what our NA resellers have.

Yes, I have seen G1 owners in other countries get the low resolution screen, and they are a little angry.

There is a different than WSXGA+ and WSXGA, with the higher resolution screen you have more real-estate, meaning you can fit more on your screen at onnce. for example 2 word documents side by side and nothing will be missing.

Programmers and designers also prefer higher resolution screen to do their work.

The next factor is your eyes, can your eyes handle high resolutions, older people tend to want lower resolutions so there's less strain. When it comes to gaming the G1 screen is able to scale well, so that's a another positive when having a high native resolution but gaming at a low resolution for increased FPS and graphic settings.

is the 1280x800 good enough for gaming?I'm buying this laptop for gaming and I want the graphic to look beautiful, can the 1280x800 bring beautiful enough graphic for gaming like far cry and oblivion?I wouldn't have problem if the difference is not that big

Hi everybody! I have a random question. I'm getting this "panic attacks" recently - should I buy Vaio SZ instead of Asus G1? Vaio is lighter and professional looking, but G1 has all that gaming power. Would you trade your G1 for VaioSZ?

    Any thought are appreciated.

These are very different machines. If you're really not sure which one you want, go fill out the questionnaire and see what people think. If you game much at all, there is no doubt the G1 is the machine you want.

If you are not keen on the G1's looks you should look toward an Asus V1JP instead, this is much more professional machine with as many and more features and uses the same excellent screen.
Or the new Asus VX2 widescreen Lamborghini machine with NVidia 7700 graphics, leather palm wrests a glossy black or yellow finish and indeed it's very own alloy wheel :)

I was wondering if someone can take a look in their "Device Manager" and let me know how the PCMCIA controller is listed.??

    Cardbus etc.. and Driver info..

Wanted to know because the wifey works for Sprint and they finally released an ExpressCard modem but I need the PCMCIA to have certain chipsets to use the ExpressCard to PCMCIA adapter..

Ok ok.. "Some people will ask why dont you just get a PCMCIA card?"

I just bought my 8yr old daughter a Dell E1405 a few months ago. (ExpressCard)
I will be buying probably an HP dv6000t for my 11 yr old son in a few couple months.. (ExpressCard)
And will probably get something later in the year for the wife.. (ExpressCard for sure, probably on Santa Rosa)

    Anyone see a theme? :p

    Thanks All..!! :)

New G1 owner checking in!! I'm incredibly psyched about having one of these bad boys. I "found" it at an odd place, its a new product at one of the Best Buys here in Orlando. Of the 6 in the surrounding area, it was the only one to carry it. The model is slightly different from what's normally sold on the websites.

The G1-AK020C-B is identical to the G1-AK024C with the following differences:

    No backpack
    No mouse
    No Lightscribe drive
    1 Year Warranty

The backpack, mouse and lightscribe aren't real deal breakers for me but the warranty made me nervous. I actually opted for the full coverage 3 year extended with accidental damage protection. This is my first laptop and I want to last me a good long while.

I'm still getting used to running Vista, as long as performance of WoW stays up to stuff I'll keep it, otherwise I'll nuke the drive and go back to XP. Very excited, lol... got a feeling I'll be tired Monday morning.

I finally ordered mine last Friday (07/23/07) and it should arrive by the end of the week :twitcy: (why this long you ask? I ordered "Reversed Ground" shipping to avoid taxes  )

I'm really happy about it and can't wait to get it... I think this is going to be a looooong week... :swoon:

I'll post my comments as soon as I get it!

Thanks for all your input on the G1!

I know how you feel, I just ordered a G1 from Geared2Play. I ordered it after I played around with a couple of Dells and got some advice on these forums. It was just under $1800. God I hope these things are put togeather better then Dells.

    Yeah! Congrats!

Even tough I still don't have my G1 to verify it, I'm really confident on the built quality of the G1 and Asus in general based on all the post I've read about it... There are many other Asus models with newer chassis than that on the G1 which is based on an "old" chassis design, but compared to other mainstream brands like Dell, HP, Toshibas, etc, the Asus G1 appears to have better quality overall.

Based on my job experience, I think Dell is the one with the worst built quality bar none.

There is an interesting article here
that I think will interest you a lot. It talks about ODMs and OEMs and the truth behind brand names on mainstream notebooks and even boutique names like Alienware, Sager and such. Look for it at the very bottom of the page.

By the way, do you know that Asus is the one responsible of manufacturing the current MacBook and MacBook Pros? I think that says it all don't you think?

    Cheers mate!

That was an interesting article, thanks. I'd heard that they made Macs, that's a plus for them from my experience. I to think Dell is junk. I spent a week playing on a E1505 I got for my father and I came away with the impression that it had horrible build quality. It came with driver conflicts and a chassis that was so flimsy I was afraid to lift it off the table. I almost got a Toshiba but a friend talked me out of it and sugested some of the botique brands like Sager and Asus. Hopefully it will arive sometime in the next two weeks. Now I just have to decide which online game to try lol.

I'm aware of that. Most people will probably be very positive about macbook (pro), but I think that those are die hard fans and not always so critical. The few professional users that I have read about and spoken to, are less happy. I went to the shops many times over the past weeks and could see for myself that the build and display quality is not so excellent as the price would suggest. E.g. the macbook pro, pressing on the lid causes ripples, tilting the display causes flickering (something I've never seen before), the screen is unevenly lit with rather dark corners on the bottom left and right side and it gets very hot. The warranty is only 1 yr and it's very expensive to extend to 3 years. A lot of people apparently have to send back their unit for repair (e.g. see the review of the macbook pro on this site). Note that I'm talking about the high end macbook pro, not even the macbook, which looks even a lot worse. Best is to go to a shop and see for yourself! Hopefully their next series is a lot better.

Sorry but Asus does not provide Accidental Damage Protection Plan. However Asus Ensemble Notebook 3rd Year Global Warranty for $129 USD.

But if you customize the G1, some resellers do offer their own warranty which can include Accidental Damage Protection.

For the most part the Asus Service Centers are really good when it comes to hardware related problems.

LOL, wow this is WAY below cost, uhm, I would be very weary that this is a scam or they forgot to add a 1 infront of the 8...but if I were you, stick with the Resellers here and post in the sticky. If any deals were found, i'm sure many users here would post them here for all to benefit. ;)

Wow.. hahah 799.00 for a g1. It feels like an error.

BTW.. im new here and look forward one day to getting a G1. The forum has really sold me on it. I just need to find a reputable place to buy one for a good price and get all the goodies that come with it (back pack, mouse,XP and No vista?) Not sure which is good or not.

I need to save up a little before getting one.. so its not quite yet.

Actually the $799 price is for the purchase of 10 or more.......If 10 people would like to Western Union me $799 I'd be happy to go pick'em up. :D

Just for sh*ts n giggles I did place an order and checked the "bank transfer" payment box and they did email me with an invoice with bank account/routing numbers and phone numbers......

Maybe I should call and see if they would do the transaction via escrow, which means I would get G-1 at least 2 or more days before money is dispersed.......

get all the drivers for it? (i know, asus homepage, but they're all separate there)

Does the Asus DVD XP include drivers or is it just a recovery disc?

Well, I finally tamed the beast!

I got my G1 with Vista Home Premium and it was all good eye candy, but when the time came to play some games, it really sucked big time!

So I went ahead and installed an XP Pro copy I have from my previous computer and then went to Asus website to download all XP drivers.

Now my G1 really blew me away!

Honestly I didn't expect it to be this good of a gaming machine!

    "upgrade" now to Windows XP!

    You won't regret it.

Another thing I noticed was that with Vista installed, even in Quiet Mode, my G1's had a thirst for power, I mean, my battery didn't last 1 1/2 hours on WiFi and browsing the internet (not playing any games), but now with XP I can surf for about 3 or more hours and a lot cooler too!

I just got my G1 with Vista on Wednesday. In the first 24 hours that I had it the video drivers crashed 10 times. I like how Vista handled the crash, but still 10 crashes and I haven't yet tried to play a game. I decided to install XP on it last night and now I am fighting with the Asus web page to get the drivers. For some reason last night and today the driver download page on the Asus site has been real hit or miss for downloading the drivers. Some times they download slow as molasses or sometime they bring up a blank page. If anyone has a set or drivers they would zip up I would be forever in your debt!

Try downloading the drivers from a different location, for some reason I got better downloads from Japan. If that doesn't help I think I have the cd I burned them to. When I can get home I can try zipping them and emailing them off to ya.

I've got a server with serious bandwidth; I'd be happy to host them. PM me and I'll send you an FTP login to use to send them...

Absolutely - that's what I meant. If he's got them all together, I'll host them and provide a link here for anybody to use. I need them myself and Asus is so slow...

hey all, ordered my G1 two days ago, will be "upgrading" it to XP once i get a look at wut the talk is about this thing called "vista".

i've seen scores that pc's n notebooks get for running vista usually out of 5.0, highest score i've seen so far is a samsung laptop yet to come out that got a 4.3.
Have any of you run this? is it a test or is it found under system properties?

if any of you have run this please post the scores that you got on your G1, thanks in advance

I finally got around to getting this product(Plexus Plastic Cleaner). I found it at a Harley dealership but I'm sure any motorcycle shop would have it. I didn't have any luck at auto parts stores.

My G1 is only a month old so the plastic is still in great shape. There were a few light scratches from daily commutes to the coffee shop and back. I got a microfiber cloth, carefully applied this to the outside glossy plastic areas and the areas to the right and left of the touchpad. It was breeze to apply and buff.

It looks great! The minor scratches are gone. The oil and dirt from my fingers is gone and the areas around the touchpad look nice and shiny. I'm definitely impressed with it and will continue to use it periodically to keep my "toy"(as my wife calls it) nice and new looking.
