Keyboard key removal is pretty simple stuff, but you'd need to replace the keys of the same type (there are only a couple of different types so it's not too difficult).

However if your question means - will someone replace these keys for me? The answer is you'll have to ask the e/retailer yourself.

My point to you is... If your purchase power is based in the colour of four keys, then you need to seriously revisit what you want/need a notebook for, 'tis a minor thing. You also have green flashing lights and a green surround around the web cam to contend with once you get over the WSAD keys.

I don't know, I was just sent this:

    5K160 Performance

    Data buffer2 (MB) 8

    Rotational speed (RPM) 5400

    Latency average (ms) 5.5

Media transfer rate (max. Mbits/sec) 540

Interface transfer rate (max. MB/sec) 150

Seek time average, (read, typical (MS)) 11

    7K100 Performance

    Data buffer (MB)2 8

    Rotational speed (RPM) 7200

    Latency average (ms) 4.2

    Media transfer rate (Mbits/sec, max) 629 / 561 / 561

    Interface transfer rate (MB/sec) 150

Seek time average, (read, typical (MS)) 11

That was a quick comparison I was sent and honestly, I just believed it because then I didn't have to swap out the drive with a 7200 one which = more $$

I'll see I guess. I can always upgrade later on down the road.

I dont know if it's just me, but has anyone noticed on the keyboard around the CAPS-LOCK button... the area seems a little flimsy and loose, when I stroke keys around CAPS-LOCK they make more a louder "clicking noise" than other keys around the enter button.

Maybe this is the way its supposed to be?

Also, did anybody who ordered from newegg get the free vista upgrade?

The first shipment from Asus to the stores was very small. Each store only got a few G1s, they sold out quickly. They will probably be getting more in over the next few weeks.

question regarding the wireless software on the notebook.

I have the intel wireless program running on starup which finds a wireless connection and connects to it. Is this program neccesary or can I just get rid of it and use the default windows wireless connection to connect?

If you right click the notification area icon for Intel PROSet/Wireless it allows you to 'Use Windows to manage WiFi'. I have not managed my connection using only Windows thus far on the G1 but it has worked on wireless connections on other PCs/laptops I have used. It should be possible.

nice, I'm just trying to get of the processes running in the background for faster boot time and performance. Now don't get me wrong I think the performance is already great as it is, but there are just so many things that come pre-installed on the notebook that I could do without...

Though I don't owne one (yet), I've read it is a IPS screen, so the viewing angles should be very good... Someone correct me if I am wrong...

The viewing angles are very good in my opinion. Straight behind the laptop you can sit a good distance away and clearly see the image. From the left and right the image is clear and crisp and if you maintain the same level with the laptop the image remains good till several feet away when whites start to seem 'grey'. From the top looking down the image seems extra bright and when looking from below the image can seem dark. This could be an issue if you are watching from a laying position and do not have the laptop at the same height as from where you are viewing. As most LCDs go there is a certain best range to view them from and this one is no exception. The angles do remain very good for above normal distances and two or three people should be able to sit in front of the laptop and clearly watch a movie.

I tried to use the LightScribe function on the optical drive but it would not detect a 'default LightScribe drive'. I sent ASUS a question via email and they responded:

"The G1 model laptop ODD is only for Supermulti, not capable for LightScribe"

I called back and spoke with a represenative and he stated they had just received an email stating that the G1 only has a super multi drive that does not include LightScribe.

So, despite the software for LightScribe coming preinstalled and some of the various product specification sheets listing LightScribe as an option, this model does not include it. I guess maybe the G2s or a future revision of the G1 will include it.

Its not an ips screen but its a newer lcd technology with wider viewing angles called prism.

Sort of perhaps the top of the line bottom level screen.

    hi...
could someone of the owners post a picture of the AC Adaptor and if it's easy possible just to replace the cord so that it is useable in an European country.

    It should support 110-240V:
    AC Adapter
    Output: 19V DC, 4.74A, 90W
    Input: 100— 240V AC, 50/60Hz universal

But still i would like a confirmation and a picture. Thanks

According to Asus most notebooks use around a 250nit brightness screen (I cannot confirm this).
However on the G1 & G2 screens they are using 500nit brightness screens, having seen both of these machines (albeit briefly) I can add that the screens on both machines do seem excellent! Very crisp and bright even on the lower half of the brightness settings.

hullo all. newbie here, forgive the lack of knowledge (ive already tried the search engine too). im about 24 hours away from putting in an order for my very own G1P. a few last minute questions:

xoticpc is offering arctic silver 5, but in order to apply it i have to replace the factory warranty with the reseller warranty, and the bill comes out to a grand total of $1974. are the benefits of the arctic silver 5 enough that its worth that trade off? for instance, is the xoticpc warranty any good?

the resellers i know of are proportable, milestone, xoticpc, and newegg. xotic seems to offer some interesting incentives (discount for cash transactions). anybody want to holler out massive support for one of these guys?

thats it for major questions. i know this is a new bit of hardware so there are going to be some bugs as the first owners do a shakedown (for instance the lightscribe and the HDD being hitachi vs. seagate), but no serious issues have arisen i hope? my backup option is the a8j. which is probably better for me anyway but im stupid when i see a gaming rig.

Not an expert but see no benefit on the artic silver 5, regardless of the warranty. Its not like you are going to put a larger heatsink in there or do extreme overclocking on it, like a desktop... its limited by the fact its a laptop and the heat evacuation capacity is limited due to small transfer surface, fan, etc...

Question: are these laptops overclockable? Cause the program I tried (on an A8Js) for overclocking didnt detect a motherboard which it knew how to overclock.

Just a comment on the G1 and it's free very nice M518 Gaming Grade Mouse - if you use the mouse, get uberOptions - trust me :). It's a modded version that allows access to all the settings in the SetPoint drivers, it's worth it - it lets you do stuff like set button codes for certain games, which otherwise you can't do without this (standard drivers = only 1 profile for all applications).

I have 3 of these mice, great things, but do that [ :)]

Intresting post, Artic Silver 5 is a great solution however, Venturello is correct, AS5 is heavily limited when in laptops, compared to the effect on desktops.

For ensemble units who don't customize, in my opinion it is not worth paying for AS5 and voiding the warranty, we've tested this stuff out over 1 year ago on older laptops, and the effects are very minimal, almost like have a laptop cooler under the laptop. So that could be an alternative when using it at home or at work, works out a lot cheaper and more effective, since soem notebook coolers have USB Hubs and other features too.

Some have tested AS5 on newer laptops, but have only seen minimal improvements which seemed equivalent to what a laptop cooler did.

The G1P is an awsome machine, if you want similar power in a smaller chasis, by all mean the A8js is there, but wow! The G1P is just simply one of the best 15.4" gaming laptops out there, and for the price, the specs, its simply unbeatable

Seem to be the perfect laptop for me, and a lot of people here
But I have no idea who will get it soon or not, I would gladly preorder it but I don't know how longs are the lists for each reseller, and can't afford to pay it 3 times

Interesting analogy, but I do not get it. Maybe it is because I never got my teeth pulled out by an eyebrow plucker.

Anyway, speaking behalf of what I have known, there is no gaurenteed ANSWER to that question...so, do not get your hope up. IMO, I would say a high, high chance! Perhaps, you can just get it shipped to your school, like what I have done with so many other things.

How about using friend and family as a middleman to get your laptop.
Something like this, you fly back to school, then get the laptop shipped to a friend or family friend that lives nearby, and then go pick it up when you have free time.

Just an update for some of the 90+ people on the preorder list at geared2play.com I'll just quote the site admin:

    "Hello
Just wanted to let everyone know that g1 will most likely not come in till christmas in any ample supply. All of you who were looking at other notebooks before christmas i advice you act now. Asus inventory is low on both the a8js and w3j. Infact they are all out. We still have about a dozen left of each. Sorry"

Nah, not at all. Just google it :) - I did it quick and here's the site:

    http://www.mstarmetro.net/~rlowens/uberOptions/

It's a freeware program someone wrote up, it works great for me. It's possible to do the XML changes by hand but this program makes so simple its just a couple of clicks to do it. I just thought it was a cool program that not enough ppl know about...when i first got my MX518 I thought it'd have all the options from the latest Setpoint version for the G5 which replaced it (but only has 1 side button so I like the 518 better) - but all those features (like game/program specific mouse settings) were disabled to force you to get the new mouse if you want the new software. But the options are still there, and with a few edits to the XML file makes them available for all mice you use with that program and driver, not just the new one Logitech wants you to buy - and that's what this program does :)

On my current laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200) when using headphones I hear annoying background noise (hard drive and fan). Anyone with a G1, is this a problem with it at all? Thanks
