How does the G2 feel?
I prefer the 17" the 15.4" is too small for me. I tried to use my sister's FE 15" sony, the screen space is so small compare to my E1705.
If the G2 has better GPU it'll be the bomb.

I know the GPU in the G2 may not seem as pleasing, especially compared to all other brands and their 17" monster gaming lapotps, which are quite nice in performance, looks and everything else you would expect.
Many rumours are that ASUS is creating the G3 which may have a Go 7900 series GPU, so we'll see how that really competes with some of these current 17" laptops in the market. -
I think asus chose the a6 chassis for a reason, as opposed to the f3j chassis or s96 chassis.
The a6 has more room for gpu cooling. It came out when there were still p4 cpus.
So I postulate that they are going to introduce the dx 10 gpu in this system.
Or possibly introduce an asus 7900 gs system using this chassis -
As a first time Asus owner I'd say the G1 is top notch on build quality. My only complaint is that the lid doesn't close as tightly as I'd want it to. There's still a lot of empty space between the screen and the keyboard which make it feel a little lose.
Those who keep the little fabric on top of the keyboard (for protecting the screen from the keyboard when closed) will watch it slip right out even while the laptop is closed. Its mildly irritating.
Other than that its more solid than any other laptop I've ever used (3 Toshibas, 2 Dells, 1 IBM, and 2 HPs). -
That is truly great to hear, hkarthik - and I thank you very much for that valuable input!
-
My G1 is on its way! I just ordered it from zipzoomfly.com who had it in stock and it should be here by Tuesday!
-
Dunno if you guys noticed, but CNET reviewed the G1, and gave it a 6.9 out of 10. According to CNET, even the Dell Inspiron E1505 is better than it.
I don't listen to CNET anymore (biased opinions), but I just wanted to see if you guys wanted to post a comment on CNET complaining so others don't think bad of the G1 or Asus.

Well I personally wonder if CNet actually reviewed this unit to be quite honest. I know Asus notebooks and my complaints are admittedly petty, especially since my benchmarks are basically what I'd consider the best overall notebooks in other Asus models......
However, they claim the "good" as being the battery life and they claim the "bad" is in low frame rates. Now, I think the battery life is pathetic for an Asus, but it's a performance machine with a cheaper, smaller battery - so it's expected... It's also a machine that won't be lugged around all that much as it's heavier for a 15.4" Now in terms of frame rates, I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I haven't heard a soul complain about the A8j's since September w/ the 7600 or 7700 gpu's... and this not only has the same gpu, but has a MASSIVE cooler for it (which the A8 really doesn't - at least compared to the G1). So, the G1's gpu can easily be tweaked on top of everything.
CNet no doubt has pull over the market and this may hurt sales when it comes to those not too familiar with Asus, but I think anyone doing any other research should easily be able to look through that and base their own decision on multiple reviews.
The "by sight" reviews that I've spotted on a lot of the various web hot spots for gadgets and things seem to put pressure on the better places to push out reviews quickly... I'm not saying they didn't actually use a G1, but when some other sites allow "reviews" by "contributors" who get their information from pictures and specs sheets and throw together a "hands on review"..... it just seems to take some of the real indepth reviewing off the table because they simply don't have the time.
For the sake of it though, I would be the first to say that you shouldn't simply entice the forum to go and leave complaints because as of today, I know I could count on my hands and toes all of the end users in North America that physically have even gotten a chance to turn on a G1 to this point. So, my advice would be to perhaps advise someone who has or is getting a G1 to perhaps get a review together themselves for NBR and if they disagree with what was said at CNet at that point, they should go over and leave a little remark and drop a link to their review here on NBR. That's really the best way to go about it and in the long run everyone that reads that review will most certainly be checking out the forum and it would be good if they had a more intense review to give them a reason to stay.
Just my thoughts.. -
Agreed, CNET's bad review & 6.9 out of 10? Please give me a break, I need my Kit-Kat
I love G1, but I'm not a hardcore gammerSo I opt for V1J instead
-
Ya, cnet has kinda gone down the shizer... justin and mark's review are frigg'n kick ass...they own compared to cnet's
-
Does anyone know if there will be better batteries available for purchase? Even another battery would be fine because I want to use this at my house(plug into my bigger monitor) and as a laptop for traveling. I just want to know if there will be possibly a bigger battery or just a spare available.
-
BTW, and related to CNET review: is there any other 15.4" notebook with a better GPU than GF7700?
AFAIK ATI X1800 and GF7800/7900 are only used in 17 notebooks -
Just wanted to introduce myself. I just got my new G1 two days ago. I love it! It was recommended to me on this forum. I look forward to learning a lot here, helping out, and also learning all the ins and outs of my new laptop.
The only issue I had so far is today when my system went into hybernation (battery drain) and when I came back and plugged it in, I couldn't get on my wireless network. I had no idea what happened. It was not detecting any networks. I did a quick internet search and some information tipped me off - I remembered there was the Fn+F2 toggle to toggle between wireless/wireless+bluetooth/bluetooth. Somehow during hybernation, it must have switched off the wireless. Once I toggled back, the network was recognized immediately and I was back on the net.
Is this a problem with the Direct Console? I'm seeing other people having issues with it and haven't been able to complete reading through the posts on this thread yet. -
Vista installed without any problems until it got the video card...it didn't recognize it and I had to use force ware version 97.52 in order to make it work. Vista rated the G1 at 4.5 with the ram receiving the lowest score. Has anybody else installed Vista, and if so what did you get as your score ?
I will keep you updated if something comes up.... -

Well, *most* hardcore gaming systems are 17", but there in lies the problem.... in a 17" system, there's a lot more room for a lot more stuff... a lot more stuff that translates into more features, even better graphics, and more performance. But that's ALWAYS how they've gone it.....
-
Yet with a 17" system, you can say good bye to portability.
-
Having sought out several reviews from various sites, is there any confirmed date as to when the G1 will be release in Asia or Australia??
-
Hi!
What's the 3dmark05 and 06 scores w/ the GeForce Go 7700??
Just wondering -
So the best GPU in 15.4" is GF7700 and Asus G1 the only notebook... as the Asus A8Js in 14", right?
So I can´t understand CNET review! -
I don't know why people even pay attention to CNET. Every "review" I've read on their site felt like the reviewer was running under a 15 minute timer. Their reviews are like what someone would write after they've incorrectly read the cliff notes.
May be I'm a little biased. To me a proper professional review is more like something you would find on Tom's or dpreview (There are some great ones here, too.). -
I read sometimes CNET review, but I won't do it anymore!
Of course NBR are much better, well not only NBR, I read too laptoplogic, tomsharware, anadtech ... -
They obviously reviewed a very low grade unit on Cnet (didn't even sound like it was the NA model). The resolution they listed was 1280x800 (wayyy off from the NA model).
And the framerate comparison made no sense. They should have been comparing the G2 to the Dell XPS and the Toshiba gaming laptop. It was a total apples to oranges comparison.
It sounded to me like the reviewer was some kind of Dell fanboy. CNET has officially lost a LOT of credibility from me as of today.
I think the only reasonable source of product reviews is through community sites like this one or the user-based reviews on Amazon.com. So called "professional reviewers" have little to no credibility with me anymore. -
3DMark 06 Results 2,389
These scores and more can be located on the first page of this thread. -
Can someone install the OpenGL Extension Viewer and append the full report?
www.realtech-vr.com/glview/ -
my stock 06 score was 2679 so that is a misprint. -
I have attached a screenshot of my original 3DMark06 score, 2389. I can retest sometime and see if the result differs.

ok and here is my a8js score
http://www.geocities.com/stamarus/06.JPG
this was the stock drivers and nothing altered from nov 8.
i was going to ask clock speed but yours says 450 398. mine is 450 400
any other data we should look up to see if there is any difference in our hardware?
in device manager/display adapter/ details this is the code
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0397&SUBSYS_14421043&REV_A1\4&2D404BB6&0&0008
is that what yours says? -
Stamar that's strange, is that an old copy of 3DMark06? The one I downloaded last night straight off of the mirrors of Futurmark wouldn't show me the score without comparing it online. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I also used the basic version.
It looks more intune with the screenshot 6times7 posted. Perhaps the score you got was from an old revision of 3DMark06 which would explain the huge variance in your score and what other people report. -
standard 3dmark o6 from futuremark.
older than the ones you may be using but its from nov 8th.
unregistered.
If I hit submit it goes to the exact same screen apearing the exact same way.
So you are saying it doesnt tell you the score until you hit submit?
Well you are the first person Ive heard describe it that way so that must be very recent. -
I just used it today after downloading it last night, previous versions of 3DMark always produced the score after the benchmark completed for me. But this version wouldn't show it to me unless I compared it online.
-
My score is the same as the other a8js owners.
BUT we did all take the test late oct early november. The test itself could be different. But please dont ask me to figure it out Im tired of running 3dmark -
Hahaha, I wouldn't dream of it XD It's such a pain in the ass to download the half a gig file and then sit there watching it run. But it seems from the most recent G1 tests that the 7700 is just slightly faster than the X1600.
-
I was wondering when will this laptop be released in the UAE i saw at a site it was present at the GITEX exhibition which was held here.**** missed it!
-
I am not sure where the difference comes from. Can we compare results by individual test? -
Well I can use logic ok
we have the same hardware. Whats different?
Well our computers might come with different installed software. There is a decent chance your computer comes installed with something that slows it down a lot but I couldnt tell you what....
They do come with different versions of windows.
They might even come with different video drivers you can check that on the asus site.
But I have a feeling we actually ran a different version of the 3dmark 06 test. I just dont feel like downloading it to find out.
and i cant really even return my computer to as new settings i removed a lot of that stuff and updated the video drivers since then.
in my screen shot it does show 3 different scores if you can find those 3 scores in your test you can compare that.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=84736
heres a bunch of other benchmarks to compare.
edit ah finally i found a benchmark that shows dual channel memory. I compared my memory write speed to the ops speed in everest and my speed is twice his. -
-
Stupid question I suppose -
LoL, I'm pretty sure it was 3DMark06 and not PCMark. In fact, I downloaded 3DMark05 right after that and this was yesterday. Maybe you should check if you have the newest revision because there are different version of it.
-
I just got my G1 today! its great. Christmas present
-
WOOT! Congratulations! =D
-
Woot! Give us another review!
-
i dont think so
-
Yeah I;m lost , for the gpu for this laptop, the 512mb geforce go 7700, is the the 512mb shared totally with the system ram, shared partially with the system ram as in 256 dedicated, 256 shared; or 512mb totally dedicated ram built on the the gpu and has nothing to do with system ram. Cause i heard someone say it's 512 shared system ram as in all 512 is taken from your system ram?
I placed an order already so i need to know whether to cancel it or not -_-" -
-
-
Where exactly did you read it was 512 shared? From all my resources, it's 512 dedicated.
-
Hey, Anyone here knows an online shop that ships internationally ?
And has an ASUS G1 for sale ?
Saudi Arabia or Philippines.
Thanks. -
Hi All,
I am this closed to burn my credit card and buy the g1, i just would like to ask the owner a few questions:
1) what is the real weight of the laptop?
2) what is your perception of the weight and size? I have got an asus 5672 at work, and i find it quite big when i am in the plane with it and since my company has this economy class policy for the local flights, it is not always easy.
3) should i better go for the a8js? with the same configuration. Dams i prefer the look of the g1.
thx for your answer.
Pat -
if you travel, I'd go with a 14.1 laptop. The G1 is big and heavy...everyone I know who has a 14.1 or a 15.0 has found my laptop to be a little big.
Its beautiful and works great, but probably unwieldy for those who find themselves traveling a lot.
Stick with the A8JS if you're a road warrior.
