    Hi All,

I purchased the G1 with Vista integrated and I think I'm gonna go back to XP. However after looking at the asus site, I'm not convinced all the drivers are on their site. Since my G1 shipped with the driver cd for vista I have no CD for XP drivers.

Could somone assist me in telling me what drivers, software, and patches are included on the XP driver cd so that I can make sure I get them all.

    Thanks

    a) Windows XP should automatically install a lot of the drivers. Since you have Vista already, maybe take a screenshot of your drivers. Seeing as it was shipped with XP MCE recently, there is driver support.

I guess my biggest concern is MS patches that are needed but not really published that you need them.. For instance the Vista driver cd has two MS patches on it that unless you knew to look for them you would never apply them and end up with a possibly slower or less stable system.

the only thing I can think of that you might want a patch (that isn't an automatic update) is probably the dual core CPU hotfix. This can be found here (validation required). I haven't really found it to make much of a difference - my assumption is that you're installing XP SP2 and not just XP. I'm guessing that is one of the hotfixes... what is the other one (should have some sort of description in the file name)

Remember you can turn on automatic updates, and you can also (in IE6 or IE7) go Tools --> Windows update, and then you can also get Recommended updates (can see it in the side) - just in case you usually just get the automatic updates. This includes stuff like MS .net framework, or Windows media 11 (which you can also get direct downloads for, but it's nice to have it all there for you) as well as any hardware updates. Make sure you get the real nvidia drivers though - MS ones aren't that great - especially for any sort of gaming

So what I'm hearing is that XP has the drivers built in. Because the only xp drivers on the asus site I see are audio and video.

look at a lot of your system devices. (right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager). go through some of them, right click and click properties. You will find that a lot are from 1/07/2001. These are simple/basic ones such as keyboard, and most of your system devices. These will all be found by MS on any XP version even the earliest w/o SP 2 or SP1 slipstreamed to them. So yeah there's lots of drivers that will install - the basic components of the system.

With your newer (assuming Core 2) processor, the driver is still old (from 2004) - hence the need in some notebooks for the cpu hotfix. but with SP2 I've found that it has run fine, with all the updates from MS.

I have an ASUS S96J for which XP SP2 found everything on initial install except for the power management/chipset (which is downloadable from intels website. Running windows update as I said and going to "hardware devices" after it scanned further put on several more devices)

Here is your chipset update utility. (automatic, it'll install 945gm chipset I'm guessing possibly 945PM not sure what the G1 is.

You shouldn't have that big of an issue.
I looked at the Asus website and almost everything is there.
I would like to emphasize that I don't have a G1 but wouldn't hesitate to roll it back if I felt I needed to.

The WLAN, CPU Hotifix, Audio, Video, Power4Gear, Splendid, Camera, Camera security, modem, and more are all listed there.

Just dowload all of them and put em on a CD if you want so they are ready.
Load Windows and load all drivers.
You won't have a problem using the system with basic stuff while loading correct items in.

And the Catalyst mentioned from Dashboardy would be if you had ATI video so disregard. You would use the Video supplied on the Asus website for your Nvidia card.

oops yes sorry bout that. (edited above) yes, download the drivers from the ASUS website. They'll be more updated than MS most likely (november 2006 fyi)

well your modem device needs to be installed. did you download the driver from the asus website? it's in a category of its own on the site. Note that this needs to be installed after sound driver. So basically you probably need Universal audio architecture, then install your sound driver, then your audio driver, both available from asus download site.

My guess for the usb device is a camera (not sure if your model has one, but i think that is what mine showed up as) - or possibly your chipset driver needs to be installed if it hasn't already. some of the camera drivers are somewhat tricky to install on asus laptops. umm i'd guess it'd be on the CD (like you should be able to find a name or something wrt all the drivers).

The other thing the USB device might be is the Toshiba bluetooth device. Do you show a bluetooth device BTK-183 in your hardware listing?

Can we use with Vista (ultimate) licence provided or an Asus generic one, Windows XP (he,pro or mce) legally ?

Sorry if this was answered :|

Not sure if I understand your question correctly but if you are asking if you can use your Vista license to load Windows XP then the answer is no.

That's not always true. There is such a thing as downgrade rights that permits you to run an older version. This usually applies to OEM and volume licenses.

    http://www.reasonco.com/vista/vistadowngraderights.htm

You will have to check your EULA to make sure.

You're welcome. Again, the only way to make sure is to check your EULA.

Wow never realized there were downgrade rights. However it appears to only apply to Business and Ultimate flavors of Vista. Most laptops I have seen ship with Home Premium so it appears they wouldn't be eligible.
