Anyone waiting for the ASUS V1JP? The only difference is the V1JP costs $200 more, only gives 1GB of ram, 40gb less hard drive space, and a x1700 instead of 7700go.

So who's waiting for the ASUS V1JP? I lean more towards G1 'cause it looks cooler and it's cheaper for better specs. I'll just live w/ the imitated carbon fiber, since the extra layer of paint is good enough. I actually prefer the looks of the G1, but I like how the V1 is magnesium lid + all carbon fiber.

Did you say the only different...and then list at least 4 different specs. Interesting, anyway, I would choose ASUS G1 based on what you have listed.
    Is plastic that horrible?

I will quickly summarize why one would wait for the V1JP it is because it offers great features, for business and school users, fingerprint reader + multi-bay for a modular bay battery and 2nd hard drive.

The G1 is totaly for gamers and people looking for the BEST bang for the buck, it offers superior specs all round, and a great screen.

Both laptops can game roughly equally, but the V1J has more features, like the Docking station, which will be available, and the spill proof keyboard, while the G1 is aimed to more of a LAN/Desktop replacement, both are good laptops, but go with the one that suits you best, which looks like the G1.

Again, if this is one of those threads to convince you one way or the other, by getting people to defend both sides, stop it... that's not what this forum is used for. I will give you one piece of advice though....

If you think the G1 is a better system for the reasons you mentioned - get it. I'll tell you right now that in reality, you get every cent and more back from every notebook Asus makes...... the V1 is worth every penny... so beyond that, you figure it out. Yes, it has a lot more features....... but if for nothing else, it's build it superior and I could tell you right now that it's what makes all of the V and W series "worth more" to people who appreciate that.

Yes, it has a less powerful gpu, and a smaller hard drive, and less ram..... big deal..... You can't make the G1 a pound lighter..... you can't make the G1 magically get a docking station either..... and for good measure, you can't make the G1 work its way into the boardroom - without looking stupid...

Everything has it's place... and the G1 and V1 should not be compared... they're meant for two different types of people.... The only ones that should be on the edge are those just getting out of college and wanting to do some growing up... and in that case, they're always going to go with the V1 unless of course for some reason their big plan is to move back into their parents basement?!?

Did that help? I thought putting it in the most brutally honest way possible might do more good.

I did not even take into account of all those features. I do not think I am going to "get out of college soon." It's more like 10 more years...anyway, brutal is good!

I guess I would be in the 'best bang for the buck' camp; I play games a lot less frequently nowadays - 37yrs old and, while still a kid in many ways, I have other expensive hobbies that demand much of my spare cash - but I still appreciate the odd hour of Oblivion and a decent shooter.

My wife has decided that she is buying me a new laptop for Christmas as I have told our kids that they can have my Dell XPS2. I was going to get it myself but she insists...and I won't stop her :D But timing is key to the laptop I eventually end up with - y'see, over here in the UK, they are much more expensive than the USA and given that we will be in Texas visiting my sister for Christmas in a couple of days, buying it in the USA makes obvious financial sense. The G1 has ticked all my requirement boxes and my wife has - in conjunction with my sister - made the order, I believe with MilestonePC at my recommendation.

Having seen the V1J, I reckon I would perhaps have chosen it over the G1 simply because it is less flashy and appears by all accounts to be better built - something I regard highly. But there is no chance of my getting one before Christmas and my wife insists it be under the tree! So here's hoping I manage to get the G1 - 'cos failing that, I'll be choosing something while we are on holiday over the counter.

    :)

The "best bang for your buck" is not a bad thing.... In playboy this month the new Shelby GT500 got the "best bang for your buck" award.... It didn't win car of the year, or best luxury car.... or even best sports car. But you're getting a lot for you money. In the case of the Shelby, the interior looks like a rental car and it's still a ford......

The G1 is a great unit - but it can only be right for two people.... I hear people trying to compare a Vette Z06 to a 911 in a lot of car forums and those people get flamed for not realizing you can't just go on sticker price and horsepower... same here. No one should feel bad for wanting or thinking the G1 is perfect for them.... but just do not try to compare them.... it'll just confuse you more because you'll justify one over the other when you should say compare a G1 against a Dell XPS of the same flavor before you try to compare it to the W or V series models.

Is it true that the V1JP has a matte screen? I read that on the other thread.
The specs on ASUS say it has Colorshine, but no Crystalshine, so that's matte right?

I think i'll stick w/ the G1p. I like glossy screens because 1) better contrast, 2) easier to clean, 3) I can floss my teeth w/o a mirror. The plastic parts on the G1p shouldn't be THAT bad.

I believe it is the old (Yohan) version of the V1 that has the matte screen. ProPortables website states that it is Glare type.
