I really like my G1, having waited for it after all but jumping on the earlier A8J. Had I not found this board I might not have waited, so thank you.

But recently my display has sometimes shown magenta vertical lines of approximately .5 mm width on what should be white screens. The problem doesn't prevent me seeing what I want, but it's annoying, and certainly not what I'd expect from an otherwise great computer, especially of the caliber the forum suggests Asus to make.

I can get these "stripes" to disappear by just opening or closing the display a little along its hinge. Do you think I just have a loose connector, or could there be another source of the problem? I don't want to give it up for warranty work unless it's the only way to fix it. But if it's likely to get worse I don't see any alternative.

    Thank you for any suggestions.

yeah I think I know what it is
When the frame rate excedes the screen refresh rate this happens
update your drivers and make sure that you have enabled vertical sync

Based on reading posts from others with that kind of problem in different notebooks, that sounds like a problem with your video card to me. I'd get it replaced.

Thank you for the replies. I don't see any video tearing as described in posts for video games (although that is a principal use for my computer).

I see it mostly when the computer is first started everyday and not as frequently later. As an example, I can't duplicate the effect now. Although I have made a picture that illustrates what the problem looks like (below).

My hypothesis is that as the computer warms up, some metals expand and make a better connection. Hence the loose connector concern.

As for the driver, I will update it. Where would I find the vertical synch option? Would that be a tab in nVidia Settings?

Of note, the magenta lines only appear on white backgrounds. Rarely I also see blue pixels, no stripes, on black backgrounds.

Thank you everyone for the help in troubleshooting this.

actually, i had this exact same problem with my last computer....there was a problem with the lcd inverter. i don't think this is a gpu problem but a screen problem.

I don't know what could be causing the problem, but I find it strange that only some parts of the screen are affected, while other parts appear to be normal. Is this a limitation of the screenshot, or is it actually that way?

very similar happen on an unrelated model years ago. z80k had magenta colored dots in vertical lines from top to bottom. as i remember the problem was related to direct x and a specific driver downloaded as part of windows updates. really hard to troubleshoot actually and the only way to fix the issue was to format and reinstall the drivers while avoiding some update from windows. Your problem very well may be as a result of bad video ram or even a bad gpu. the first thing you should do is reinstall using the supplied restore cds. if you have not altered your drivers and have not installed any clocking or hack software i think its safe to say it may be hardware defect

I highly doubt it's a driver issue since he said it goes away if he moves the display around.

I did not see the op mention that. if this is the case then it is most likely a problem with the data cable or possibly the lcd mainboard. depends where and how he moves it.

Sorry i thought you mean you can get it to go away if you closed it and let it hibernate. If you can get it to go away by simply aplying pressure to the hinges then it is most likely a problem with the data cable. I think your best course of action is to rma it unless you know how to part the frame, take out the lcd and install a new data cable wich can probably be found on the estore

Yes, thank you loopty, moving the display helps. Although it may take a couple of tries.
Eddie: I don't have to close it all the way to get the problem to clear. Just nudge the display forward or back around the hinge (as if closing or opening, but only a fraction of an inch). Even tapping the back of the display seems to be enough. My thought was indeed some sort of cable. But I'm not at all comfortable with taking the computer apart.

So what does "rma" it mean?

My apologies for not describing this better before.
