I am starting school this Jan for game art design and animation.
The programs I am definitely using are:

    -Adobe Photoshop
    -Adobe Illustrator
    -Autodesk 3ds Max
    -Corel Painter
    -Adobe Flash

Hardware requirements for Autodesk 3ds Max:

    Minimum requirements for 32-bit versions:

Intel® Pentium® IV or AMD Athlon® XP or higher processor
512 MB RAM (1 GB recommended)
500 MB swap space (2 GB recommended)
    Hardware-accelerated OpenGL® and Direct3D supported
Microsoft Windows-compliant pointing device (optimized for Microsoft IntelliMouse®)
    DVD-ROM drive

    Minimum requirements for 64-bit versions:

    Intel® EM64T, AMD Athlon® 64 or higher, AMD Opteron® processor
1 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
500 MB swap space (2 GB recommended)
    Hardware-accelerated OpenGL® and Direct3D supported
Microsoft Windows-compliant pointing device (optimized for Microsoft IntelliMouse)
    DVD-ROM drive

I am taking classes online and I need a laptop. Cards I am looking at are:
-Quadro FX 2500M, GeForce 7950GTX, and GeForce 7700w/512mb.

    Laptops I am considering:

    -Asus G1 w/nVidia7700 512 mb ram
    -Clevo M570U w/7950GTX or 2500M
    -Dell M90 w/Quadro 2500M

My main question is, will the 7700 hold up with the above listed programs?

I wonder because I wouldnt mind the savings I would get if I opted for the Asus G1 and I also like the looks of it. Do you think it will be capable of playing games like F.E.A.R., DOOM3, warcraft3, HL2, WoW, and the Quake series plus future game releases like crysis?

Will it render 3d models and animate in programs like 3ds Max okay?...at least for my first year or two?

I figure by my second and definitely by my third school year I will upgrade. Possibly G3?
Would the 7700 hold up for my first year of basic design and 3d classes?

If the G1 is a bad idea what do you suggest?

I posted this in the 'what notebook..' forum and the 'gameing gfx cards' forum. I hope its okay to start a new thread here. Now that I have narrowed down my choices, and considering I am mostly interested in the G1 for the competitve price and size, I figured I would ask about it in the Asus sub-forum.

    Thanks for any help,
    -gp
