This might be a dumb question but I am going for it anyway. I have connected a second monitor (19 in.) and I want to make it monitor 1. I can't get this to work and have given up. Is it even possible to make this external monitor the number 1 display? If not then is there at least a way to make it so that I can put games on the bigger monitor while using both. I'm trying to put hl2 on the bigger monitor and I have had no success. I also keep wondering if I am missing a few options because I right-click on the monitors in the nview manager and there are options grayed out that look like the ones I need. Do I not have admin rights? Are the options only available on desktops? I have never done this before but it seems to be a huge pain in the arse. Thanks for the help.

You need to open up the video driver client, and play around with the settings. Try the display options, then advanced.

I have played around with a bunch of display options but I still can't figure it out. I'm guessing that I might have to mess with the drivers but it won't be easy.

easy. right click desktop > properties > settings then u'll see the 2 screens. click on the external screen and check the 'make primary' (or something) box, ta da! your 19" LCD is now the primary screen

i've actually aslo connected my 19" widescreen to the G1 also :D BUT, there's no way i'm gonna make it primary... i've noticed that the G1's screen, albeit being a 15.4" screen, has much much higher resolution and is much much better for playing games (i play CSS). also, i've noticed that it's so much easier to use the keyboard while using G1's screen (so ur left hand's right in front of u with the screen also right in front of u) rather than an external LCD's (so now the 19" is in the middle but ur left hand is outta the way on the left (quite far to the left too cuz the G1's lid is obviously still open) and the position's just dam awkward)

so ya, my 2 cents, ur choice, my frag ;)

Well I can get the single monitor to work but I can't make the 19 in. the main monitor when I use dualview. I don't think it's possible and it's driving me crazy.

i don't think you can use both the G1 screen and external monitor at the same. at least i have not heard of that option. you can how ever set it to use the G1 screen OR the external 1.

There is absolutely no reason why you couldn't use your G1's screen in addition to an external monitor. What you can't do is use 3 (LCD, 1 on DVI, 1 on VGA).

Monitor 1 is always going to be your notebook's own LCD screen..... The only way you can make monitor 1 and external monitor is if you set up a clone view, which obviously isn't want you want to do. But, there is no issue in terms of you setting up that external monitor in any other way, any other reesolution... no problems should be had.

You'll need to play around with the settings(which is how I figured out how to change the settings), so its possible with the G1, as is with every notebook with VGA/DVI. Have you updated to the latest drivers and video client?

To clarify: as I understand it, the poster wants to make the secondary-output monitor (not LCD) the PRIMARY monitor in Windows (taskbar, start menu and everything). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Now, my answer: impossible to do with stock nVidia drivers, and extremely difficult to do with stock ATI drivers.

I managed with ATI, but I forgot how; anyway, I clicked quite a lot of times until I succeeded. It is nevertheless possible.

The reason for failure with nVidia is that the required options, as the first poster stated, are grayed out. Probably they need to be enabled; have you tried coolbits to unlock them? Maybe that will work. Or some other driver than the default one (although you risk running into trouble with that, many people report trouble with modded drivers).

Later: OK, I managed to do it with ATI. Actually it's quite simple: go to Advanced > Displays, and click the blue '1' button under the external monitor (this is for my 9700 Radeon Mobile). That should do it. Then change the resolution to something appropriate.

I have had no problem using my external monitor. The only thing I want to do is make if the main monitor during dual view but I guess it is not possible. I wouldn't have a problem if my games would open up in the external during dual mode but they always open up on the laptop screen.

You should be able to make either monitor the primary. I am getting my A8JS any minute now and use 2 monitors. I will give it a try tonight and report my findings back here.

wait... have u tried my suggestions? or am i not understanding your problem?

you've connected 19" LCD to the laptop and want the 19" to be where the taskbar and wotever are, and when u play HL2 it'll be on the 19", right?

then follow my instructions. it works... unless i was being flukey...

Under Nvidia Control Panel, Choose DualView, then right-click on the monitor that you want to be your primary, and select Make Primary.

    That should work.

Has anyone figured this out? I've been messing with it all morning and have been unsuccessful. My goal is the same:

    • Use dual view
    • Make the external display (in my case a 20" Dell) the primary display showing the start button and taskbar, etc.
    • Use the notebook panel the secondary display.

I have an A8Js, and I have tried everything in this post but the option to make the secondary monitor the primary is grayed out.

Have you tried any of the newer drivers from laptopvideo2go.com?

I can confirm that I can't do it with my A8JS either, using the stock driver.

I ran into this same issue when I first got my G1 and wanted to game with an external monitor, requiring it to be set as the primary display.

The problem is that for some reason the necessary options aren't enabled in the driver installation .inf files which means they aren't enabled when you install the drivers.

The solution is to mod the .inf file from the ASUS provided nvidia drivers to enable the required settings. Then copy the driver installation files from the driver CD and replace the file with your modded one, and re-install the video drivers with your mod in place. I was able to discern this information from the informative site laptopvideo2go.com. I have attached the modded .INF file which I used successfully to enable this setting before.. I didn't bother to see about making any other tweaks or trying the custom drivers/inf mods which can also be found on that site.

Turns out this becomes moot if you upgrade to Vista, though. I noticed the ASUS provided drivers don't have the same problems.

Thanks for the info on laptopvideo2go.com and for the file.

Are you running Vista now with the new drivers? I have the GeForce Go 7700 in my A8Js and I'll be installing Vista in the near future. If I can use the Asus provided drivers and accomplish my goals then I might just wait.

I am currently running Vista with the drivers provided from the ASUS ftp, as found here. So far the video drivers seem decent enough, they allow me to run Aero with everything looking great and running smooth. That being said I expect the drivers to be tuned a little more as I have had the driver fail. Fortunately in both cases this has happened, Vista was able to gracefully restart the video driver without me losing any of my work.

The only things which cause me grief in Vista are the lack of drivers for an external USB audio interface I recently purchased for this laptop to do recording with, as well as some occasional audio stuttering during media playback.. I'm downloading some new Realtek driver as we speak to see if they correct the problem. Looks like they were released on a couple of days ago..

Overall the experience in Vista is worth the few shortcomings I've found.
