I'm not sure what part of my thread you missed, but we had confirmation on Wednesday that the current ETA was the middle of December (For North American distribution), and Asus hasn't been early on a delivery in at leasta year and a half (Z70v came in two months early in May of 2005)...... in fact, they've only met what they consider "final" ETA's a few times over the last three years....... with most ETA's said to be within a month, getting pushed back at least two weeks and as long as five months (R1/R2 were set for a mid June release and we got them in mid October)...
I wouldn't get your hopes up, but it's good to see an optimist around these parts.
G1 - 15.4" / 512mb dedicated 7700
G2 - 17" / 512mb dedicated x1700 - yes it is the first x1700 with 512mb dedicated. -
confirm this:

It's surprising, as that trustedreviews site proclaims that both models have the option of selecting WXGA or WSXGA+ resolutions. Interesting. Someone must be wrong somewhere.

@iwant the link you posted may be correct for the release of the units to the UK market, as you know NA is usually gets notebooks 1-2 months after the UK gets them.
It would be nice to have both units be released at the end of Nov. but that doesn't seem likely, hence mid december seems to be what it could be. -

mid-December? That's perfect, just in time for Christmas!
I was going to get an A8Js, but wow, the G1 is worth the extra money it seems
Anyone know how much the G1 is going to retail for in Canada? -
-
I think he asked "how much, not when", gusto5
Anyway, I think it'll be the same price as sold in USA, just converted into Canadian dollars. Check with Danny from MilestonePC on what price he intends to put the G1P and G2P at, if he has a decision already. -
I'll keep my fingers crossed -
No problem, AceOfSpades. I'm almost like a teacher, I love answering questions!
(Insult me if you think I'm a freak)

Canadian prices can be found here:

I too am thinking of getting the G1. It's a very nice piece of tech. I just have a concern with possible scratches and fingerprints on the finish, but I think I might get some of that 3M anti chip tape they have a auto detailers and cover it with that... I wish it had brushed aluminum like the G2! The G1 should also handle Oblivion fairly well as the A8Js seems to.
There is good info in this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=88259&page=2 -
I think I'll be better off getting the A8JS. Longer battery life, slightly more mobile, similar benchmark scores, hundreds less expensive. I'm not sure the LED lights and cool features on the G1 are worth an extra $400 :x

Here is the comaprision between A8 and G1.
http://www.milestonepc.com/canada/doc/A8 vs G1.pdf -
Thanks for the mini-comparison, Danny.
Could you elaborate a bit more if possible? Like comment on build quality, use of materials, weight, etc.? -
So the G1 has a "Mental" HDD Cover?
-
metal for mental users ^__^)v
-
haha, That g1 looks sweet, how does it compare to build quality with the w3j?
-
I've heard that it is not as good as the W3J, rhcpcrony, but its all just rumour right now, since barely anyone has even seen the G1P in person (although some have).
I don't think it can be BAD build quality, but probably not as sturdy as the W3J. -
Have both, G1 and W3j so I think I can say a few words about it. So G1 is like better A6, with burshed aluminium palm rests and carbon-like finish around keyboard and on the lid. Nothing speciall if you ask me. And the hinges are not so good as I would expect. My review is almost done I just wait to see official news on polish Asus site about G1. Than I will be able to put here more pics with W3.
-
I look forward to your review. Please add a side by side comparison with pics of both the W3J and the G1 if you can. The whole reason many of us waited for the G1 was because I wanted A8Js specs + W3J build quality + bigger screen. Please let us know if it lives up to this expectation.

-
Here is some nice info on the G1 in case anyone missed it. Please be sure to read the whole thread as there are many other interesting facts here as well.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=88259&page=2
Looking forward to that review as well. W3J vs G1. I wish I could take some of both and combine them! It looks like the G1's LCD cover is held on by visible screws. Why not remove that cover and have a custom piece made from brushed aluminium? Perhaps a void warranty? The G1 needs the W3J's case and bluetooth, that's it. I love the G1's guts and the W3J's skin. The G1's lights are cool but also silly at the same time. Good thing you can turn them off! -
Hope they dont come out end of November, rather come out after the Vista launch so that it can package with it
-
Sorry FiReWoLf, they've confirmed that its arriving around December and January, packaged with Windows XP Media Center
. But they'll probably change to Vista after a few months release.
-
That's what I thought, since today or tomorrow are the last days of November.
-
Price at USD$1799.00, fair or not?
http://www.milestonepc.com/states/index.php?cPath=87_82
G1 64bit? -
I think its a good price.
I mean, its as powerful as the A8Js, but it also is 15.4 inch screen, so obviously the price goes up there. Add the backpack and the mouse, there and there and its about the right price.
I would love to have the G1P. If only I could find money. -
excellent value for what you get
2 gb and 160 gb hd, 1680 x 1050 screen. -
I think it's a kick ass "gaming laptop" I havent seen a 15.4 in notebook with a gpu higher than a 7600 or x1600
-
Just hope G1 will reach my area b4 Christmas
-
Well, You can buy it right now if ya want...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16834220098
I'm getting it, but later for a better price from one of the contributers of this forum. -
Nice find, copterguy - it also appears that Newegg even has them in stock (or so they claim). The G1 has already been out in China/Taiwan - maybe it's one of those units with an English-installed OS/programs.
-
yep, I even called newegg to make %100 that they actually had them in stock and it wasnt just a mistake. Ordered mine, should be here next week. w00t I cant wait!
-
Does anyone know if the G1 is gonna be offered with XP Pro anytime soon? Everywhere I've looked is selling them with MCE. Thanks
RMSNJ -
-
rmsnj, since the G1 is meant for gamers, it won't be sold with XP Pro. It'll all be sold with Media Center.
You can install XP Pro yourself, but why buy a gaming notebook if you need business features? Get the V1J instead. -
I recall that several markets outside NA had the G1 and G2 shipping with Pro. I will also have to get Pro and will probably be multi-booting. For me right now, the fact that the V1J has (in the specs I've seen) 1/2 the RAM, smaller harddrive, etc. can't justify the extra cost. Yes the build quality will most likely be better, and the swap bay would be nice. But it's hard to say if that's worth the extra $200 at this point for me without more independant reviews.
Speaking of this, any resellers have any new confirmed specs on the NA V1? With the G1 coming in so soon it looks like I'll have to make my final choice quickly. -
What is the response time of time of this screen?
-
V1J also has the biometric finger-reader, whatever that's worth (some actually profess to its usefulness). The V1 also has the media fastplay (without booting up the OS) for playing DVDs and music - not sure if the G1/2 has this feature.
The swap bay is very nice but I can't imagine using it often, if at all - the only scenario is swapping HDDs (especially comes in handy after inevitable HDD failure). Also take note that the V1 takes a hit GPU-wise with the ATI X1700 instead of having the Go 7700.
I am actually in the same boat as you, Fantasmic - I would very curious about the V1J vs the G1 and was nearly about to post a new thread on that topic but what's the point when nobody (besides those from Taiwan/China) has their hands on one yet. If you can wait, wait - I'm waiting most importantly for a DX10 GPU to be released as a DX10 GPU is quite a leap from previous generation DX's since it is primarily hardware-based (e.g. something you can't upgrade unless you buy a whole new laptop).
For whatever it's worth (I also notice that NBR didn't post this in the news section), Nvidia announced a couple of weeks ago that they have been sampling G80-based GPUs for notebooks so that they can coincide a mobile G80 GPU upon the release of the new Santa Rosa Centrino platform (which also coincides closely with the Vista release).
Too many upgrades at a single time, so it's hard to resist waiting. If you can wait, that is.
EDIT: Response time of 16 ms for the G1. I cannot remember the source, may not be official.
EDIT EDIT: Stamar noted that a Babelfish translation of the PCPOP review of the G1 states that it has a 6ms response time. But don't take Babelfish's word for it. -
How far off are DX10 gpu's in notebooks?
-
Are we prophets?
If I had to guess I would say April at the latest. -
But I'd also guess the first round of DX10 notebooks will probably be desktop replacement models. Looking at the power requirements of DX10 desktop cards, where many people are suggesting 600-1kw power supplies, I'm not sure how mobile the first gen of DX10 mobile cards will actually be. But again it's all conjecture at this point.
-
Hi all,
Operating System - we have XP Professional in the UK as standard.
G1 and G2 will be in retail and e-tail in the UK around the 6th December.
I've had a quick hands on of the G1 in the flesh briefly and it feels as good as I had hoped after seeing the pictures.
Also .....I haven't seen people mentioning...... the Dual Layer Light Scribe drives on these machines as standard (woldwide)!!
I'm guessing the funky OLED above the keyboard will be programmable as well, which I think is pretty cool
Responding to someones comment about a NV7900 - I'm pretty sure we won't see this GPU in the G1 or G2. -
the response time of the g1 screen is 16 ms.
THe screen used is cmo 200 nits 1680 x 1050 you can look it up at their site.
mastha showed us the screen used.
Newegg has an office in fremont so they can bring the stuff to market a couple days faster than most of the other places. So everyone should have the g1 within a couple days. -
-
-
no I cant but the stats on the manufacturers site describe the viewing angles in a number.
All the reviews of it say the viewing angles are fantastic and the chinese review showed a picture showing it had better viewing angle than the g2 screen.
I dont know what to say about the screen but what stands out is that its not very bright, its 200 nits so its like your standard hp 6000 or dell e1505 in terms of brightness.
it looks good though
you will notice this is about the hugest 15.4 inch widescreen machine on the market. I almost looks like this chassis can hold a 17 inch standard screen. -
-
And about the 7900, there is talk of a G3 with it. MilestonePC got that info from an Asus rep.
