For starters, I'm relatively new to this board....so hey :)

anyway, I love my Asus g1, got it when the AK024C just came out, but now the LCD is just dead. I believe it's the graphics card, maybe too much playing in class. I hook it up to another monitor and ran the recovery cd, tried to do a fresh install. But after that, the windows loading screen is glitchy with some small magenta colored lines and spots on the monitor hooked up to it. and afterwards, nothing. Simply restarts. As for the LCD on the laptop, its completely gray. Im pretty sure my warranty is over and well the serial label on it kind of melted away either way. I figure the graphics card may have gotten fried, but just curious on thoughts and is there any recovery from it. The BIOS works fine though, but anything that accesses the graphics, simply doesn't work. If it helps any, i do not recall any big updates on the graphics card or BIOS.

    Thank you

If artifacts are appearing on the external monitor, it is very likely that you have a faulty GPU. I know that the GPU for the G1S is soldered into the motherboard, is it the same for the G1? If so, a motherboard replacement is probably going to be required.

Are you sure your warranty has expired?

I second the last question of Negz. It doesn't matter that the sticker has rubbed off, if you still have the box or the warranty flier, or even just the receipt, either of these things will probably mention the serial number and you can use it to claim warranty.

I agree that it sounds like a bad or maybe overheating GPU. Is the notebook hot to the touch when it shows the problems? Although if it shows artifacts even if you power it up after it's been off for a while, and has had the time to cool down -- it's more likely a defect than overheating.

I'm kinda having the same problem. I have an asus g1s, Geforce 9500M Gs graphics, 4 GB RAM. I used my laptop a little bit today, turned it off, then went back to it... and I had no graphics. It runs fine on an external display, but everything I do doesn't seem to work. I tried the recovery and reinstall. Didn't work. I did however notice that my laptop heats up fairly high, but it has never been an issue before. The OS is Vista Home Premium and everything works fine. Its just the display attached to the laptop that won't show anything. Anyone got an Idea?

That's an LCD problem, not a GPU problem as above.

Do you see a faint, dim image on the LCD (no backlight)? If you do, then it's either the inverter or the backlight. If you don't, then it's the LCD itself or the coax (signal) cable.

In all cases, this is something that ASUS should fix from warranty.

all right, thanks, but I also have to point out that there is backlight, but not an image, not even faint. And I don't even think I can get warranty because I bought my laptop from a cop shop computer retailer and the receipt is more of an invoice. Don't know if that works. Strange enough, I used the laptop this morning and had a display on the screen. IT worked. But then I turned it off, and it didn't work. What the heck...

As long as you have a form of proof of purchase, and the serial number of the computer, you can still ask ASUS if they will honor warranty.

It can happen that components fail gradually, so they will come back on for a while, before failing completely...

It may also be that the signal cable is interrupted or shorted. Does the image come back on if you move the screen?

Unfortunately not. I have tried moving the scren due to other peoploe's suggestions but to no avail. Right now I am actually using my laptop, so it is obviously working. It's strange though. it seems that if I put my laptop in my bag after using it, it won't diplay anything when I pull it out next. But I'm in class right now, and I just let it sit on my desk all class. I tried a couple of times throughtout the class to see if the display would work. It didn't. So at the end of class I put the laptop in my bag, and five minutes later, i pull it out and hey I can type this message. In my previous class I had the cord plugged in, but no display... In fact almost everytime my cord is plugged in, it doesn't work. anD it is the opposite if I just use the battery. Something smells wonky with this to me.

It looks like it could be a bad signal cable to me. However, the fact that moving the screen doesn't have any effect, is an argument against that... it's not clear cut.

    Assuming you're in the US:
If you don't have warranty, or just can't be bothered to be without the computer, search for the correct LCD coax cable on the ASUS eStore, and order one. It's less than 20 USD usually.

Then, replace the old cable with the new one. It's a fair bit of disassembly, but it can be done, I think we have a G1 disassembly guide on the Info Booth.

If it's the cable, then this should fix it.

Other possible causes are the LCD itself, the GPU, or the connectors on the motherboard and LCD...

As a first step, you could just disassemble, pull all the cables, and put them back in... even that might fix the problem (at least temporarily).

Well, I think I might have some how fixed the display. It turns out that all I do is keep it out of my bag. It turns out that the graphics card was overheating because I was putting it right from usage into my bag, and it did not get a chance to cool down. So now it works fine. Thanks for the help. ANd I know I probably shoulkd have sen that one coming. Later

That's weird. Even if the card had overheated, once the computer is off or in standby (and I certainly hope it was, in the bag!), the card should passively cool down. It will take longer, in a bag, but it's not going to get hotter! So I do not see how putting it in a bag is different from leaving it on the table, except in the time it takes to cool down.
