My wifi icon isnt working properly. The double monitor icon in the taskbar.
This is a problem because it makes it difficult to connect to new accesspoints, esoecially if the accesspoint has a password.
when i click the wifi icon, it takes about 4 mins for the menu to come up and ask if I want to connect to a accesspoints. after i click "connect to a network", it takes another 4 to 5 mins for the list of available accesspoints to come up.
it really takes 4 to 5 mins for each of these functions, no exaggeration.
I would click the icon and nothing would happen so i do something else. Then all the sudden the menu will pop up.
Even if I am connected to a network, the icon will still say that I am not connected. When the list of available accesspoints finally pops up, and I am already connected to an accesspoint, it will still list the accesspoint I am already connected to and say that I am not currently connected.
man i hate vista
anybody have any solutions or ideas?

I had problems similar to this under Vista with my laptop. My wireless would not find new networks or randomly not connect to ones I'd been using for quite some time.
Eventually I went into the wireless card properties in the hardware manager (it's an Intel 4965ABG) and started tweaking the settings in there. I made it so that the computer can't turn off the card to save power (I can still do this manually), and increased the broadcast strength to max, etc. Basically gave it full power to broadcast and receive.
This worked for awhile and then the problem came back. In desperation I went to the wireless channel setting and changed it to 6 from 11. I haven't had a problem since. Frankly I don't know WTF is up with Vista and networking--ALL my friends on Vista have had problems like this, be they on a wired or wireless connection. Either way...good luck! -
also, why did you pick 11? -

just something else while i was tweaking with the settings, should roaming be put on the highest as well?
-
bump......
so how do i change the channel from 6 to 11? -
I turned roaming up to highest and it didn't seem to do much...so I dunno
I think it just means how often it looks for new networks.
Anyway I meant that it was originally on channel 11 and I changed it to 6.
The reason I changed it to 6 is because Vista help (I know...I was so desperate I read the help file) told me that 2.4 GHz wireless router signals are clearest/most often found on channels 1, 6 and 11.
I also changed it to 6 because I remembered that my router always had 6 set as the default channel, even though it was supposed to scan and find the best, and my wireless card is ALSO supposed to pick up on that and connect automatically. Regardless, somehow they both jacked up and so manually changing the number worked (I believe...they could have just decided to work suddenly, who knows with Vista?).
So first I'd go into your router's wireless settings (192.168.1.1 or 0.1 or 1.2 etc etc) and see what channel it's using. I don't know what router you have so I can't say where it might be other than in general wireless settings. You'll of course have to use a desktop or other computer connected to the router to see the number.
As I said in my previous post, the location to change this info is in the wireless card properties of the device manager.
R click computer-->go device manager in the top left --> go network adapters --> double click your wireless card --> go to advanced tab
Then change the channel to whatever was displayed on your router.
Again most of these devices are supposed to auto-scan and connect with eachother and I've never had a problem until Vista NOR do I know if that was even what fixed the problem, but I haven't had an issue since, and frankly I've given up trying to understand why Vista does certain things. I just change settings and tweak things and if it suddenly starts working I praise the computer Gods and get back to work -
hm....this does not solve my malfunctioning wifi icon problem
=( -
Well that's all I can think of for now, sorry!
