    Hey,
How might someone go about cleaning out the fans and heatsinks of a G1S without completely disassembling the unit? Or is this impossible? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Personally, I'd take the unit apart and then clean with an air duster although taking the unit apart may invalidate your guarantee/warantee.

If you try and clean them while the unit is still together, you're going to blow dust all over the mobo and other components, no matter how careful you are. For this reason I think it would be unadvisable.

You can pick an air duster in a local photographic store for relatively low prices.

EDIT: or if you want a finer stream of air and not to pay as much, you can buy a hurricane blower - they have around the same effect - but I'd use the compressed air if your lazy and can't be bothered pumping the air through - like me really.

How about not taking it all apart, but just until you get to the fan? That is possible for many units. I'm not sure about the G1.

Have you checked the InfoBooth sticky, Cleaning your ASUS Notebook? The pictures are for the V6 but most of the steps will probably apply to the G1.

I'd take it apart, too, but then I'd spend the rest of my damn life wondering . . . where in the hell was I supposed to put this one last screw? [IMG]

    Hi guys,
    thanks for all your input!
It doesn't seem to be possible to access the fan without disassembling the unit, though... when looking at the bottom, the fan is blocked by a copper ring that surrounds it. Any way to get by that? Maybe take off the keyboard?
Also, I have not been able to find a disassembly manual...

Keyboard removal is the second thing to try after checking the quickaccess panels. Use any ASUS disassembly manual for that, it's the same for nearly all the models.

Also remove all the panels off the belly of the notebook, see if you don't see the fan and heatsink fins.

Nah, way different.. the V6 has the fan screwed in from the bottom of the notebook facing out, the G1S has it exactly on the opposite side: taking off the pannel just shows you the fan you can't get it at all unless.. well, I can't even see how to get it out.

Yep, that can happen indeed. You probably need to remove the top case for that... You have two options:

    1. clean from the bottom through the fan hole with Q-tips, as far as you can reach.
    2. remove top case

For the 2nd you might need disassembly manual. Also keep in mind that if you need to remove the heatsink along the way, you will void your warranty.
