My Asus G1S speakers are somehow stuck on external, won't switch to built in speakers even when I remove the audio cable. Seems it's a problem that has come up before. Reinstalling audio drivers (Realtek) did not work, restoring system to factory status did not solve it either. Anyone have any ideas? The notification popup from the task bar from Realtek does not appear anymore when i plug in or unplug external speakers, however, plugging in or unplugging microphones or other devices from other slots does give a notification. Is this a hardware problem? Lastly, is it worth it to send this in for repair? I mean, the G1S speakers were pretty horrendous to begin with.

Sounds like its the actually speaker's problem.......

Are you using Vista? Then you need to manually update the driver through device manager.
-
1. Make sure you have the latest drivers from support.asus.com installed (per the previous suggestion)
2. Try it in a different OS: Live Linux for instance (it's easy, google for it).
3. Before sending in, do a Windows reinstall / recovery.
If it doesn't work in Linux, nor after Windows recovery to factory state, then it's most likely hardware and you need to send it in. -
How do I install Linux on the machine?

You don't. Use a live cd. It comes with the disc. Just insert Ubuntu. Boot live CD (it does this by default) and check the sound. It won't touch your hard drive. It is a system completely run from the CD. (not exactly as it uses your ram and so on, but you get the point...) If the sound works using Ubuntu live, then you have a problem with Vista/XP, if sound still doesn't work, you need to warranty your Asus. Damn, I thought Asus had a good build quality. I haven't seen anything like this from the Compal Forums.
You can download the .iso from Ubuntu.com -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Before you do any of that tell me what you have under playback devices. Right click on sound devices.

If you use Vista, it may default to the Microsoft HD Audio Driver. This would causes all programs running at that point to default to the external speakers. Changing it to headphones would not change this. Only programs that run AFTER you change it to heaphones would register this change so if external speakers are set as the default device, you need to change it to headphones then close all browers and restart. Go to some place like youtube and play a clip, if you have sound, you just need to displace the microsoft drivers with the realtek ones. This needs to be done via device manager.
When you indicated that the realtek taskbar icon had disappeared, it suggested that the drivers may no longer be active. -
I had the exact same problem. Audio worked fine when I plugged in a headset but the laptop speakers were silent. I checked everything I could think of: bios settings, device manager, control panel, etc. but nothing seemed to fix it.
Then after a couple of days, I noticed that my speakers were working again. I have no idea what caused this. I'm quite baffled actually. At least it's working now.
Another thing I noticed is that the Fn + volume up/volume down keys are not working anymore. Even the graphic that appears when using the volume function keys is different. No longer do I see the nice 3d graphic in the middle of the screen, but rather I see a 2d square on the top left corner.
I like this laptop, but these minor issues are quite annoying. Especially since I haven't found a pattern or cause for them. This is one of the reaons people rave about Macs. They seem to have a pretty good integration of hardware and software.
