I'm thinking of ordering the G1s instead of the Sager in my sig (the eta for it was too long). The G1s looks like a very nice laptop, and I'd be using it in college for class/gaming in the dorm.

I'm wondering, does it come with a full Vista disc to do a fresh reformat with or is it some weird recovery disc?

And if I upgraded the harddrive from a reseller such as gentech or Xotic, would they install the same Vista disc that Asus provides?

Oh and one more quick question: does the serial for Vista also work with 64bit if I later wanted to install that from another disc?

    Thanks, Desmond

It's a weird Asus recovery disc. Apparently a reinstall with that reinstalls all the bloatware it comes with pre-installed. BUT. There may be a way to actually get a full Vista disc, since you already have bought a license. See http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=142316. I haven't tried this yet, but I think I'm going to.

Haven't done this myself, but I'm pretty sure they would do the same. They are the dealers, and Asus is the boss. If Asus says only this disc for recovering Vista, then that's all you get.

Not quite following you here. You mean you somehow have a copy of Vista 64 bit without a serial number of its own? I don't think a copy of Vista works with the serial number from a different copy of Vista, even if they were both the same bit version.

For OEM I'm not sure but I'd think they work. The Retail version's serial works for both.

Just check on the sticker, if it's written "Vista Home Prenium", that's likely to work but if it's written "Vista Home Prenium X86", it won't.

Not quite true. It does indeed come with a recovery disc but the drivers and 'bloatware' come on a separate drivers disc. You can do a clean install using the recovery disk and then rebooting when it prompts you for the drivers disc.

I purchased a G1S yesterday and love it. The first thing I did was format the drive and I installed Vista Buisness.

All the versions of Vista are on the same DVD (not sure how the 32 vs 64 works), and the version installed is dependant on your serial number.

Xotic uses the same OS disc provided by Asus, but the extra partitions are removed if you upgrade the HDD. I would call it a ghosted version of Vista made for Asus to resell in their ensembles. M$ makes more money this way. It's really no big deal and we end up paying one way or the other. :)
