    Hey there..

I'm thinking of perhaps upgrading my Asus G1S hardware.. I dont even know if its possible so thats why im asking.. Would a 8800M perhaps be possible to upgrade to? New harddrive and better cooling (really needed)?

If yes, could you recommend me something? (Cooling and harddrive)

New HDD yes -- I can recommend the new 320GB HDDs:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/hdd-galore,1762.html
2.5" HDD Galore: Samsung, Seagate, Toshiba : The New Notebook Drives For 2008 Are Here - Tom's Hardware

Cooling, you can add some external cooling, or perhaps the so-called "mods" -- removing bay doors and tapes etc.

GPU, no. Please see theFAQ on the Info Booth.

If you want the best performance boost for the money, get extra RAM unless you already have 3GB or more.

No, new HDD won't void warranty provided you keep the old one and replace it when you send it in for any warranty work.

Also removing covers won't void warranty (you can just screw them back in). Removing tapes might void it.

Watch it with that hard drive, it's a 3-platter 12.5mm high HDD. I'm not sure if the G1S takes more than 9.5mm. Gonna check on asus.com..

Well it doesn't say. Please, check it before you spend your money.

I don't really know, maybe find a reseller online who lists the HDD bay capacity.
Or just measure it yourself, but that's more difficult especially if not all the sides are exactly rectangular.

I'm sure one of the resellers will know, if we manage to attract them to this thread. :)

If the G1S were a sub-15" notebook I'd be pretty sure it wouldn;'t work, but it's a big 15.4" so who knows you might get lucky. Don't buy before you're sure, though.

    It's a 15,4.
Hmm.. How am i ever to get sure on this?

Yes that was what I was saying.

But Everest reads the height of the current HDD, not of the HDD bay.

(I know it's a 15.4, it's moreover a BIG 15.4, so that's why I was saying you have chances that a 12.5mm HDD will fit. But you need to make sure)

Edit: Let me be extremely clear, I think I wasn't clear when I was explaining.

    a) Your current HDD is 9.5.
    b) The 500 GB HDD is 12 (12.5, whatever).
    c) I am unsure whether the HDD bay in the G1 takes a 12/12.5 mm HDD.
    d) If it does take a 12/12.5 mm HDD, then even though your current HDD is only 9.5, you will be able to fit the new one in.
    e) You need to make sure whether it indeed fits a 12/12.5 mm HDD before buying.
    f) One of the resellers will probably know the size of the HDD bay on the G1 notebook...

    There.

Should i open it up and look :)?

Edit: Hmm.. So i need to make sure the HDD fits a 12/12.5 mm HDD bay?

Yeah, sure, why not. But like I said before, when measuring directly you need to take into account:
    - whether the bay door is sloped in any way.
    - the thickness of the bay door
    - even if the bay is 13 mm deep maybe the mounting bracket won't take the 12mm hard drive.

On the other hand, you will be able to tell with pretty much certainty if the bay is NOT deep enough for 12.5mm.

I think 320GB are 2-platter designs, so they'll fit. Check the height of the HDD it should be listed.

Interesting, that's nice that they checked even though G1S technically only supports 9.5.

Yeah, in that case you can get it. Like I said, G1S is a big 15.4 incher so you might get lucky -- looks like you did :)
