So yeah, finally going to buy this week the first day I have off work. Either tomorrow or Sunday. I had planned on getting the G1S and it was my final decision until I got an email from polarlinks offering to sell me his Asus W2PB for roughly the same price as the Asus G1S. He has only had it for a week, so it's still pretty fresh out of the box.

I'm in a dilemma because for the same price I get two different machines meant for two different purposes (some are for both) and I don't know what to do. With the G1S, I get gaming, multimedia, and movies in a slightly portable 15.4'' frame. With the W2PB I get multimedia, slight gaming, and great movie experience in a sleek and sexy 17'' frame.

However my two problems with the W2 have been the graphics card and screen. The graphics card on the W2 is the ATI x1700 as opposed to the 8600GT on the G1S. As my gaming needs are not that demanding to warrant an 8600GT, I could get by with the x1700. My problem with it concerns Linux driver compatibility. Can I run Feisty Fawn Ubuntu with Beryl on the W2 with no problems? If not, then the nVidia would be the choice for me. Secondly the screen...I love having the extra space on the screen for watching movies but it's not WUXGA so I can't enjoy full 1080p. I can't do this on the G1S either but I want that option if I'm going to get a bigger screen.

My plan was to get a 24'' WUXGA external monitor come holiday shopping time and hook that to the G1S and I figured the price would be around the same as getting a G2S. Would the monitor even display at WUXGA with the HDMI port of the G1S or would it be downgraded to WSXGA? This plan seemed smarter than just having the G2S. However, I can get the W2 for the same price as the G1S and if I do get the bigger external monitor it would still cost the same. I don't know what to do, I'm getting really tired with all the effort I've put into researching and weighing the options that my brain just will not make up its mind. I need help!

Aye, you may really want to consider the G1s more heavily, ATI is a pain with Ubuntu, it works but depending on how knowledged in Linux you are, it could be done.

The replacement W2 has been rumoured about but nothing solid and who knows when it will ship.

Thanks I think my decision just got easier because I'm a total noob with Linux although I have several friends with extensive knowledge with Ubuntu. Also, I'm not too sure but Asus' warranty is not transferable is it?

I've been thinking of getting Beryl, but I don't know what distro to use it with.

I'm only aware of Ubuntu and Saybayon running it with the most success. They still have a lot of kinks to work out but I know that Saybayon already has Beryl standard when you install it.

I like Gentoo btw. Really easy to use, lots of documentation and with portage you can install linux apps in one easy step. Also the warranty started the day it got manufactered or if you have the invoice from invoice date.
