At least I haven't got so far any answer from the Asus Technical Support.

It will be very interesting to see, if the Vista Service Pack 1 will have any effect on the HD Audio driver issue. I have heard there may be problems with drivers. Localized Finnish version of the SP1 will be out probably in the end of this month. Could the situation get any worse?

Flip: Have you already installed SP1?

Hey guys. I can't say I have any good news :p

I just installed XP on my G1s and I still have the exact same problem. I tried two different drivers, as I recall the numbers were 1.84 and 1.69.

I can still do the volume trick but it's getting a bit old and I just don't understand what's going on... who knows... maybe I'll add a third OS, Ubuntu or something just to have somewhere to turn for flawless sound support. I'm gonna keep on looking for solutions so I'll let you know if anything surfaces.

yeah i think that i have SP1 and it didn't change anything

the weird thing then is that it works without any tricks and problems on linux (for me) ... why is it that it doesn't work on windows then ? not even changing to XP or reformatting the drive and reinstalling vista helps :/
    hmmm
i am happy that at least now the trck with te volume up and down works for me... before i had NO sound...

    but it really is annoying...

    please someone find a solution...

Hi guys, something strange happened today. When I booted my Asus, Windows sounds were back ... I mean the speakers work now. I have not installed any new drivers nor Vista SP1, only the usual hotfixes by Microsoft and Windows Defender updates. I have no idea, what has cured my Asus.

    This is really weird ....

Did anyone come up with any answer to this? Do we still have to send the thing back for a new MB? Mine has been doing this for a few months and it's annoying that they can't fix this via drivers. Volume down/up fixes the speakers. C'mon Asus.

Bartis, where did you find the new audio driver?

The driver on the Asus website http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us for Vista 32 bit has not been changed since 2007/09/14 and is version V6.0.1.5449. This one I already have and it does not work correctly.

I checked as well the Realtek site. The HD audio codec there is release 1.96, 2008/6/18. Could be worth of trying, or ...?

Please note, go to the Taiwanese site http://www.realtek.com.tw. I got a warning from my McAfee SiteAdvisor while visiting http://www.realtek.com that this site tries to change my home page.

To make it clear, after some weeks of no problems I lost again sound on my speakers. I am not sure if this happened after I installed an update of iTunes.

So I would surely try the new driver set.

Just a small update on my problem. I installed XP not long after my last post and nothing was different. I would not get any sound without doing the volume-trick first.

I then had some problems with RtkHDAud.sys causing BSODs when playing a game. So I updated the drivers and now the volume trick has stopped working (but I don't get BSODs... yay?).

So at the moment only my headphones work with this otherwise nice laptop. But I think the fact that the problem is the same between two OS that use similar drivers indicates that the problem lies with the Realtek HD drivers.

I don't have a problem with my speakers... but they're like really low for some reason. I put everything on highest meaning all up to 100. Is that because the speakers are located on kinda the bottom of the laptop in the front? It's still fine, but when I had my other older laptop, it was twice as louder.

    Hi guys,

I just wanted to inform you, that in my case the problem was caused by Realtek drivers. Recently I formatted my hard drive and installed quite new audio drivers (from 2008, don't remember which version though) and got the same issue as described above. I decided to return to drivers that I used to have from 2007 (version 5.10.0.5433, the installation file is WDM_R169.exe) and it fixed the problem. In case anyone wants to try these drivers they're available on my rapidshare account: http://rapidshare.com/files/132537760/WDM_R169.exe

    Good luck :)

    P.S.
After all we can be sure of one thing - it's a SOFTWARE problem.

Nol -> The problem was solved after I installed the drivers you provided. Thanks so much. This was such an annoying problem.

Hopefully the problem won't crop up again.
