My VAIO FE went belly up a few weeks ago and I have been looking for a replacement in the 15.4 screen range. I am occassionally mobile so I wanted something in the same weight range - 6 lbs. I am considering the Sony VAIO FZ, Dell Precision M4300, and the Dell 1530. I briefly considered Asus, but I wanted a high performance notebook with a Penryn processor and was a little concern with the weight and size of the G1, M50, and VJ1 series. I recently noticed the G1SN-B1 advertised on the website of a online retailer. I am also intrigued by the M50SV.

I know nothing about Asus - other than purchasing a motherboard from them a while back. I am mainly interested in the quality and portability of the two Asus notebooks that I am considering. I know the G1SN-B1 is too new to warrant a review, but the earlier models would probably be a good measure. Anyone have any opinions on the performance and batter life of the G1SN-B1?

    Thanks!

you can read some reviews of g1s in this website. The battery life is around 2-2.5 hours.

I personally own a G1S-B2 and so far its very nice. It feels pretty sturdy and has a very nice finish on it, but it attracts finger prints very well. Thats my quick assessment; you can read G1S reviews here at the site, but personally im a pleased with my purchase.

The reviews have been very informative. I mainly was wondering about portability.

Some retailers describe the screen as "glare," while others say colorshine. Does the G1SN-B1 have the glossy type screen?

G1s and XPS M1530 is very nice for your replacement. But I prefer G1S for a higher gaming laptop.

The G1s is rather bulky/heavy for a 15.4" notebook, the real weight is about 7 lbs, and I would not call it very portable considering that it has poor battery life too.

Colorshine means glossy, there is no other option anyway.

Btw, the notebooks you mentioned aren't very comparable, so fill out the FAQ in the "what to buy" section and you may get more adequate recommendations for your needs...

Have you looked at the v1s-b1 or it's replacement the v1sn that should be hitting the US market with in the next month. It has a modular bay that lets u switch between cd,dvd/hhd/and battery making it a good option for portability.
    the v1sn gpu/cpu
    - NVIDIA GeForce 9500M G, External 512MB VRAM
    - penryn T9500/T9300/T8300/T8100

Yeah, the V1s had an issue called "modular battery kills the main one" and it was just amazing for portability with dead battery...

What do you guys think about that G1S-B2 ($1600 with rebate) versus the m50SV-a1 (for $1429)

The G1S-b2 has a 7200 RPM drive, 8600 GT and a higher res monitor (1680x1050) but the m50SV-a1 has nicer speakers (altec lansings), Penryn processor clocked slighly higher than the T7700 and is 100 mhz faster and a 9500 GS.

What do you guys think about this matchup? I really need some advice on this.
