is a cooler needed? i understand it gets hot when playing games but does it just get hot and not ruin the laptop itself? I dont mind if it just gets hot, i dont want it to ruin the laptop though. If you do need a cooler, what one would you recommend

Asus engineers their systems to be functional and operate in the long term within safe specs when used appropriately, i.e. on a hard/flat surface. All notebooks heat up when used, especially gaming or other load operations.

If you want slightly lower operating temps under those conditions, then you could get a cooler to make yourself feel better; the absence of a cooler won't adversely affect your notebook's long-term operating prospects, however.

There are at least 5-10 threads discussing notebook coolers in the forum here. You can do a search for further reading and recs.

I play supreme commander, cc3 and fear quite regularly, so I can give you a most assured no. The system runs hot merely because new technology is made to run at those temperatures. The processor if you check Intel’s site is rated to run at 100c. People are using old standards in regards to heat. I have yet to hear someone complain that their g1s shut down do to heat. If you take a look at the alianware forum now they have heat issues.

The laptop does get hot when playing games. However I don't believe it will damage the laptop. The thing I like about this laptop is even though the laptop itself is hot, the areas like the keyboard, palm rest and touch pad remain conformable. Most of the heat is redirected out towards the back. It stays relatively cool when browsing the web and other basic activities.

I believe the g1s uses the top area of the keyboard as a heat sink. Not the actual keys, but the area where the direct console and the quick function buttons are, when I play games the area on the left of the direct console gets pretty warm. But its ok considering the cpu and gpu is right under that area.
