    Hi All.

I am debating between an Asus G2S vs an HP dv9500t (which should have similar specs when it becomes available with a GeForce 8600M).

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...itch=true&a1=Usage&v1=Entertainment&tab=specs

How do the 2 laptops compare with regards to build quality? The things I like about the HP are the optional docking station, numeric keypad, and that I can order it from Costco. However, it does not seem to have HDMI output (probably not important since I don't yet have an HD tv), nor DVI output (does this make a difference over VGA?).

    Any other thoughts?

    thanks,

    - Frank

The dv9500t are going to/ if not do have the hdmi port, the rumor is tomarrow the Geforce graphics are going to be released.. look in hp/compaq forum for one called "Latest on nVidia 8x00 series" give you alittle more info on the release date...

    - the info on hdmi has really hasnt been talked much but it has been mentioned *if it doesnt have it right now....* "prob. be released with the GeForce 8"
if you look on hp.com and zoom in on the left side of the notebook you see the hdmi port u can barely read it thou

Asus G2S looks great, while the HP dv9500t looks professinal. I dont know much about build quality, but I do know that Asus laptops usually come with a wide-array of ports, and generally produce less heat.

Quality difference between Asus and HP?.....

Well I have not received my Asus G2s-A1 but I did buy and return a few HP Dv8000/9000 series notebooks.

First lets look at the screen: Unless HP makes a major change in their line, the only dual lamp screen is the WXGA+ 1440x900 17 inch. It is very bright and colors look great, it has the 8 ms response time, and it can be viewed outside. The resolution is so low though... go to BB or CC and see many 17 with WXGA, web pages are too short, and you will feel like you need more space. Then maybe you try the WSXGA, but is not nearly as bright, in fact it was too dim for my needs, but it was a great resolution. The Asus G2s has the dual lamps, and beyond excellent resolution WUXGA 1920x1200, with all the benefits of the high brightness display. A win for Asus :D

Laptop case: The HP does have a great keyboard, so long as yours doesn't ring when you type fast, mine did (but it may have been because I had only on HDD, leaving an empty cavity) The ten key is great, especially if you need one often, if not, a wired wireless ten key can be had for a little bit of money. The touch sensitive buttons at the top of the HP look cool, but good luck trying to clean the sucker, mine would turn on every time i wiped it down due to the Quick launch button... yes minor but irritating none the less. the color of the lights are cool, but I could not disable them or the functions :( . The HP is a finger print magnet, but it does look very cool when clean, its sturdy, strong hinge for LCD, has good speakers, a web cam, twin mics, card reader, lots of ports, and so on. The Asus doesn't have the ten key, but it apprears to have a much more finger print resistive case. I understand that the speakers are good, but someone said ugly on the Asus. The touch pad was rough on a G1 i tried at BB, the HP is smooth, but the buttons were never at equal height on the two dv9000ts I owned (why I don't know, perhaps lack of quality control) I do wish the Asus had a ten key, but I can live with it. They both have lights, but the Asus can be turned off. The Asus has alot of USBs on its back side, but at least one on a side... HP has a better layout. Also the HPs lid will not close firmly unless you add some stick on rubber stoppers (I did). This part of the comparison is less factual and more to do with how it feels to the user, so I cant say a lot about the Asus as mine has not arrived yet  Overall, go to a BB and see an Asus G1 and an HP dv9000 and decide.

As for performance: If equally equipped, they should preform similarly. The HP will have a ton of bloat ware on it and it Vista Ultimate will be 64bit only (others are 32) I had lots of issues with Vista Ultimate 64. I would imagine that they are about equal in battery life. The Asus does mark which keys to use while gaming in a FPS (like users don't know which to use :p )

The HP site is not updated so I cant compare price for you, but buying form Costco .com is awesome and highly recommended. The looks of the HP are a bit more mainstream than the G2s... maybe good maybe bad for either one. Check out this forum for more pro HP dv9000t reviews and posts. It lead me to buy one, HPs lack of customer service, lying sales staff and inability to take care of a customer (price dropped during shipping and they refused to lower my price ??? So I returned it and bought from Costco... should have known better)

For me, the Dual Lamp WUXGA screen is a dream come true ;) ... so I am all about the G2s. Hope this helps

Very nice review Mechanic... I think you sealed the deal between HP and Asus for me... Just wish the Asus came with an accidental damage warranty. Now I just have to try to decide between the 15" and 17" Asus.

I might be wrong, but I think the dv9500 is coming with an 8600 GS isn't it?

Thanks all. The HP site was updated today-- only the GS is available. That's a deal-breaker for me. Now the only question left is if the 8800 will be in any reasonably priced notebooks by summer's end.

I wanted to buy g2s asus before my dv9500t
the specifications are generally the same except for their graphic card
which g2s has 8600mgt but hp has 8600mgs.both have htmi port
here it looks that asus is better .
but there is a problem with g2s that you should consider:
the battery life in asus is 2 and a half hrs but hp has a 5 hr battery life in each usage.than can because of the wsxga/wuxga & also the two leds at left&right side when runing a game or any direct-x usage.
the speaker in hp is very much better than asus.
but in all if you are going for the higher performance I think g2s is a better choice.
    good luck

The G2S comes with the fastest 8600GT (GDDR3), too, isn't it?

So, I'll guess the G2S will be a lot(?) better in terms of gaming . . .

Instrument mechanic pretty much hit all the highlights. The G2S will perform better with games tho as it comes with DDR3 (faster) memory.

I liked the look of my HP but returned it for the G1S (better gaming).

    Good luck.
