I am reasonably new to the asus g2s and my old pc (a 1.2ghz dell with a 1300 readeon card) was ****. I therefore haven't had any experience with over clocking and the like. Could you, (other forum members) give me advice on how to overclock and the max overclock amounts of the cpu and gpu. I'll only me using the laptop in a desktop fashion, and i have adquate cooling (1.5 in empty space underneath laptop and a fan constantly running facing it). Also what dangers are there to overcloking of the cpu and gpu?

NEVER EVER oc the CPU. As for the GPU, increase the speed by 5-10 mhz a time and see what you maximum tolerance clock is. Be careful of the temps though.

I can't get anything over 550 to be stable, which is really annoying. People are reporting 600/850+ stable though. I might do a fresh reinstall of Vista, because the fact that my GDDR3 8600M GT is being outclocked by ****ing DDR2s is pathetic.

Well, how much you can overclock always depends on the particular hardware... I'm not sure Vista reinstall will solve your problem, because it's more likely than not hardware-related.

    Really? Damn.

And I know I won't be able to get a refund or whatever.

It still pisses me off that I'm being outclocked by the DDR2 8600M GTs. Should've got a Vostro, I guess. I mean an OC'd DDR2 is comparable to a stock GDDR3, which mine might as well be, and it costs half as much. Ridiculous.

    ...

A ddr2 card could never even come close to a ddr3 card's stock memory frequency. The most I've seen is maybe xxx/520, but most are xxx/480 or so.
    `
A 550/750 OC gets me 4500 in 3dmark compared to 3933 at stock (475/700). Most people with ddr2 cards are getting ~4000 with an overclock.

That's what I meant, the 3dmarks are comparable between an OC DDR2 and a stock DDR3.

Ok so basically you're saying i made a bad choice if i wanted to OC in terms of laptop.

@hauton: thanks downloading now, but it took me a while to figure out what software you were referring to ;)

Well I've been running tests practically all morning and here's what I've figured out:

The core/shader clock you set in RivaTuner aren't specific - I can set my core/shader clock to 550/1100 or 560/1120, but my hardware monitor will show 594/1188 at both those settings.

In fact, it will show 594/1188 at all settings up to a core/shader clock of 562/1124. At 563/1126 and beyond, it will show as 621/1242. I tried at 575/1150, same result. Setting it to 600/1200 however shows the next treshhold, 648/1296. I don't know the exact values to trigger each treshhold except for the 562/563 point that triggers the jump from 594 to 621.

Trying to run anything above the original 594/1188 clock pretty much guarantees a driver crash/artifact/BSOD. I can get past "Return to Proxycon" in 3Dmark06 most of the time, but the next test "Firefly Forest", crashes the drivers most of the time. I did get a 4600 score on 3dmark06 with the clock of 562/1124/900 (core/shader/memory) though. Idle at 69, max of 89/90 celsius.

When I'm done class I'll try unlinking shader/clocks to see if it's a specific one that's causing the issues (but unlinking is proving to be a *****, because it automatically resets whenever I exit the tuning settings) as well as pushing memory clock higher. Memory clock I know will screw up at 950, so something inbetween. I guess if I can't get core/shaders to their max, I gotta get the most out of memory.

As an aside, rohit, people have reported easily getting 600 core/850 mem, and I'm guessing that could get you 4800+ 3dmarks at that clock with the right drivers, so maybe you'll have better luck than me with your G2S?

I really don't know yet as the nvida download (of 169.01) wont let me install and laptop drivers 2 go doesn't have 169.01

btw hauton, thanks for the time you are helping me

Yes they do... You need to do a clean install, and also download their custom .ini file for the driver and replace the original one that comes in the installation folder. Just read the FAQs on each driver page to understand how to do this
