Hey all. I tried using the search function and could not find a topic regarding my problem so here it is. If this is in the wrong forum please move it mods.

    Anyway,

I have a Asus G2S-A1. I'm one of the lucky few that have had no problems with the faulty 8600M GT chips. Currently I'm running Windows 7 x64 Professional. But my computer just randomly shuts down. I have no idea why. It is not a temp problem because I could be doing anything. It has happened when firefox was open, also when I play Starcraft which this computer obviously can run circles all over, while watching movies, and when playing left 4 dead (the most stress my computer receives at the moment.) And by shut down I mean the thing just shuts off like it would if there was a black out, just a black screen with no warnings from windows itself. Then I have to push the power button to turn it back on. It also does not matter how long the computer has been on. It could sometimes do it after 30 minutes or so or sometimes after it has been on for over a day.

Is this more a hardware or software problem? To me it sounds like a hardware problem. But I am no expert. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Maybe you are not as lucky as you thought.

Still I'm pretty sure its not a problem with the card. If my 8600M GT fails then shouldn't windows just revert to integrated graphics? I figure it is something else.

Are you running it on AC or battery power when this happens?

This kind of quick-off symptom can occur with highly worn batteries that aren't reporting correct charge remaining to Windows, so it suddenly just runs out of power and shuts down.

This has always happened while the AC was plugged in. I almost never use the laptop without the AC.

These notebooks don't have secondary video chips built into them. If the video chip fails your done. I just sent mine in about 2 months ago and they ended up offering me a replacement which is now in my tag.

Hmmm that is a much better notebook. But I need mine to last at least for the end of the semester. It sucks that Asus takes so long to replace these things though. So it really is a GPU problem then I guess. Thanks for the help guys.

Yeah most of the specs are better then my G2S but I have a lower resolution Screen and no Blue tooth built in. But to get it free :D thats customer service.

If you are still under warranty you should send it in.

You can still RMA it, they'll just charge you for the repair. Your looking at about a $200 cost.
