Hey guys, i hope this hasn't benn discussed on an other thread ; i'm actually trying to install XP on my g50, not because i dislike vista but because ... i want to :p
The CD perfectly boots, files seem to be extracted or whatsoever, but when it comes to installing, i have a blue screen with an error message :

    ERROR 000000 x7b blabla blabla ...

I have launched a complete antivirus scan, no infection was found. I've read here and there that de-activating the AHCPI (or something that sounds like that) would solve the problem, but not really.

Do you guys have any idea ?

The word is AHCI. What you need to do is put the SATA interface into PATA/EIDE compatible mode; you do that from the BIOS. Or else, you need to slipstream the SATA drivers onto the XP CD.

You will find the G50 XP install guide linked from the Info Booth useful, I believe: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=282100#winxp

Hey E.B.E, I did what you mentionned and it worked indeed. Now i'm having some troubles with XP and some drivers, even though the ones to download are mentionned on the guide you're referring to.
I'll let you guys know, in case some people are interested.

Well, you can state your problems, and if we have ideas on how you could solve them we'll post those ideas. :)

Yeah thanks, well I'm now running XP, it's running smooth, but it's not a surprise, even though I find the startup a little bit slower than it was under Vista.

One of the first problems I had was that there was one chance out of two that XP freezes at startup ; the problem seems to have gone since I have installed chipset drivers (yeah I made the mistake of installing them AFTER the other ones mentionned on the guide).

The other thing is that the following drivers do not seem to be running under XP :
    D:\SOFTWARE\TOUCHPAD\Setup.exe
    and
    D:\SOFTWARE\ATKMEDIA\SETUP.EXE or
D:\SOFTWARE\ATKOSD2\SETUP.EXE (I can't remember which one did not run).
Not really bothering at the moment.

Finally, the Razor mouse that came with the laptop when I got it seems to cause troubles with its USB port. I can't find what might be displayed in english, but in french :

I guess this might be roughly translated by : the USB port is consuming too much energy than the port can provide, or something like that. I found on several forums that installing the driver would solve the problem. I thought it did when I installed it, but the error message popped again, which does not prevent the mouse from working properly.

I hope that was clear enough for you to try and help if you can. :<

You could use the following driver for the touchpad: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=306768

Neither of those ATK programs is essential.

That USB port problem has been reported by others... is it only the mouse that causes it? Or any other USB device on that port? I'm afraid people were only able to fix it by replacing the motherboard from warranty...

The thing is that not only the mouse causes that problem for example right now, I just woke up, started my comp with no USB device plugged (no mouse, nothing, i'm using the touchpad) and the error message just popped. :<

Besides, the device manager doesnt seem to show that an usb port is not working properly.

Onoes ... :< I wrote an e-mail to the ASUS online support, i'm expecting an answer within 48 hours. The problem has been reported by ACER users on their laptops, and ACER just gave their customers a patch that made the problem go. I hope the same. Btw, all the USB ports are still working, whatever might be the plugged devices. So ... let's hope.

Sry for double-posting, but for those interested, i got a message from the asus online assistance : they told me they couldn't help because they only help customers with their g50 running the native OS, i.e Vista.
The only thing they advised me to do was to swicth to Vista again, yay.

About the USB port thing, the problem seems to have gone with the installation of new chipset drivers ; at least my mouse is plugged since 20 minutes and the error message hasnt popped yet.

EDIT. error message back, while i was playing FIFA 09 with a Logitech pluggd. What should be noticed is that the device keeps working properly anyway. Second thing is that the message pops but this doesnt depend on the USB port that is used.

EDIT. Well I'm back on Vista, everything is ok. I'm relieved it's not a motherboard problem.

    Hello banza84 and others,

I´m new in this forum and I´m quite thankful to read this thread.

I followed the instructions on the URL posted from E.B.E. -thanks E.B.E. for posting!

The first problem I had was about the AHCI. I just downloaded the drivers from the link above and put them on my usb-floppy.
I´ve selected the sata drivers (F6 to enter) during installation and got 3 times a bluescreen.
Any advice how to fix it from running windows?
Is there a difference to use them with slipstream on XP CD?

Furthermore I had problems with bluetooth ( I could install the drivers from the DVD but it wasn´t working). Anyway I´ve got them run with
    Bluetooth__AW_BT253_XP_logo_5.5.0.4400

I couldn´t install the ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC).
    Someody could get it run?

I can´t confirm there are any USB problems so I assume yours have been related with too late installing of chipset drivers!?

    Thanks
    tmade

Make sure your XP CD has at least SP1, Slipstream AHCI driver is recommended, it's much easier to install XP.
For Bluetooth, make sure install Wireless Console and turn on the Bluetooth.
ITECIR still doesn't work under XP.

    Hello GenTechPC,

thanks for your tips. I slipstreamed the AHCI drivers with nLite and it worked really great and easy.
Regadring to ITECIR I´ve got it run with a driver called
    "ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) driver"
I´ve found somewhere - can´t remember the link but I would share it if somebody is interested in.
Which is the best grafic driver to use for nvidia 9700m gt under XP?

    Cheers

    Hello banza84,

Vista is rubbish - at least it´s my opinion. The only reason to use windows is related with playing games and the performance of Vista is horrible - I can´t believe using newest PC hardware and still having a snail of computer.
XP works 100% great and very fast on this notebook, but it´s your decision.

    Cheers
