Hello, i read some reviews (also i found a link on how to install xp on G50 except 3 drivers). However.. i´m planning to buy one and wonder if XP runs better than Vista on that notebook?

Why XP? Well i´m not really a friend of Vista since i read everywhere that the performance suxx and for old games u need to change tons of settings (can confirm that :( ). So i wonder why Vista is on that laptop recommended?
A benchmark test from a review:

    windows vista: 5795
    windows xp: 6040

Dunnow how big that difference is and if you really feel it. I also read that the booting with vista is faster than xp. Thats why i also wonder if vista isn´t better? maybe the hardware works better with vista?

    thx bb :)

Well, tbh, there's not going to be a whole lot of difference between XP and Vista. Sure it'll get you that (maybe) 5% (probably less) performance, but i as heck am sure not coughing up money for XP. It's not that cheap in most places still.

If you trim vista well, the start-up times etc shouldn't be too bad.

xp professional sp2 / 3 already and i´m useing it on my desktop for years already.. so the money doesnt matter at all (vista is also included for free at the g50 so i got both).

What u mean with trim vista? What options/programm/settings should i use?
You can do the same for XP i guess.. so it must be even faster? :p

Does the "old" XP have any propblems with the "new" hardware? I read vista can work better with much ram (4gb) and dualcore than the "old xp" does. simply because its a newer OS made for the new hardware? Is that true, if yes it would be better for my laptop than xp ?

I hope for some guy who got the G50 and could tell me which one is more recommended: trimmed vista or xp
Also would like to know if XP got any problems with the laptop (like the drivers or smth).

    thx :)

    Hello,

I´m running XP on the G50V and I´m quite happy. I also could get ALL hardware run (eg. ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC) see also #httttttp//forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=318997&page=2#)
Sorry..still not allowed to post links

I´m asking myself the same questions like you. Maybe Vista works better!?

Additionally I´d like to know which is the best grafic driver somebody can recommend and newer like the one from this thread #httttttp//forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=282100#winxp#
    I´m still using (17792).

    Cheers

Difference between XP and Vista is now almost nothing.

Vista has some advantages but most of the people who post "I hate Vista with a passion" usually have bought a PC with it installed and taken a look at the different start menu and dismissed it out of hand without ever using it. Some however do have valid reasons for not liking it.

As for if the laptop will run better with Vista or XP I would say try it with Vista for a few weeks (not just a day or 2, let the O/S get used to your way of working. Sounds weird but Vista learns as you use it) and then decide if you want the hassle of going to XP.

hmm i dont dislike vista because of the new design.. But it uses alot of HD-Space (16gb i think? ) and somehow i read alot of problems/bugs between programms and vista. That might be past since vista got some updates i guess.. and also most programms

And ye trying it out would be the best way.. but i dodn´t bought one.. and i would like to buy one, but before i want to know which os is recommended and why :p

    @edit:
Qwakrz says: Difference is almost nothing..
Would be very good.. also i would switch to vista then :)

Just for the vista bugs: On some community site i just read "64bit-vista + sony vegas = bull****" :D
dont ask me if its just because of vista or the 64bit version :p

There are a few compatibility issues with the 64-bit os. I couldn't install a few programs that ran fine on my last computer and my Antivirus software brought up an error saying it cant run on a 64-bit system. Other than these few issues, I would say stick with vista. It really is running great now. I was dual booting vista-xp a while back and finally ended up deleting my xp partition because vista was running better.

If you go with XP, keep in mind the following:

    +runs just slightly faster
+gaming performance is a bit better
    -Direct console doesn't work
-less efficient battery management (less battery life)

after some reading i already decided to stay at vista :p but the 64bit issues.. argh.. I hope there aren´t too many programms which won´t work with it :(

    @edit:
btw what makes the 64bit version better? More performance?

Are you running XP? Which grafic driver are you using?
    What is "Direct console"?

It has more performance and could be argued is more stable as it wont take unsigned drivers...

Also gets a few less viruses as some wont work but its not much.

As for the program issues, 64-bit Os can run 32-bit things. They call it WoW (no not the game..) it does so very well. We use it at work and I have at home on all my PC's and is not a problem. All 64-bit... Only a few cheap no name programs I have found wont work but for the most part I love it better than 32-bit... Plus 32-bit cant use all your RAM and 64-bit can! :p

I had XP and Vista dual boot in my G50 :)
I was using 175.80 which worked perfectly.
Direct console is Asus's utility which allows you to overclock the CPU and change the lighting options of your G50 as well as changing the display on your secondary LED screen.

Consider filling in the FAQ... asking ASUS people to choose between ASUS and HP will give pretty predictable results... :D

HP FTW!! :D j/k... I feel like I'm about to get smacked by EBE :p

All joking aside, it's best to fill out the faq and post in the "What notebook to buy" forum for less bias recommendations.
However for a quick run-down, the G50 will perform better in HDD storage and graphical performance but probably has less battery life. The HP will also be slightly larger in size as well.

I know this is old and there's probably another thread. But since this popped up in a search, let me tell you it is well worth it to downgrade to XP. There are plenty of drivers you can get help in the ASUS forums. You can still run Power4Gear and get LEDHype to play with your oled.
I had so many lockups with Vista I was reluctant. Windows 7 runs better but still locks up. If you look up the problem, you will see thousands of ASUS mobos locking up in Windows 7 and Vista so you might as well get XP because it's bound to happen unless you just browse the internet on your awesome new gaming laptop.
I also was running 64 bit Vista/Windows 7, but my PC is ASUS M3A78 Pro/780G and Windows 7 crashes alot but I finally fixed it by getting my Linksys WUSBG (2.1 I think) to work. It actually took the XP driver, my wife figured it out after I had gave up and said "just don't go online" lol. The hardware problem was related to the bios somehow and the fact that I used a PCI internet adapter (Proxim BGN I think it was).
But WHY does everything work in XP so good?
GAMES DEFINATELY RUN FASTER, so there's really no other way to go even if Vista and W7 did run good, eventually you would get bored and go with the better gaming OS. Windows 7 also reports better hardware scores, but aint no better. Run Shawn White Snowboarding and you can see a huge difference.
Also, in XP get the XP DOX Drivers. They are awesome.
