Asus G50V - Windows 7 DVD Drive errors

    Background:
I recently switched from Windows Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit using a full version.

Virtually everything runs perfectly - except for the DVD drive.

I'm not even sure which specific G50V model I have, as the sticker it was on turned black after a year of use.

    Basic specs:
    GeForce 9700m GT 512MB (discrete)
    4 GB RAM
    Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 @ 2.26GHz 2.27 GHz
    2x100 GB HD

    Description of Problem:
By disabling driver singing, I at least get the DVD drive to display when Windows loads (the loader recognizes it; Windows 7 doesn't)

However, it will freeze the drive whenever I pause a DVD in VLC (or randomly when running in WMP). This should eliminate a possible codec issue.

After a short period of being frozen, Windows 7 makes a disconnect sound (like when a USB device is disconnected). The DVD Drive will then disappear - until I reboot.

    The Request:
    Can anyone help?

I have a feeling I don't have proper drivers for my DVD-Drive or, perhaps, my motherboard.

I've tried the ones I presume are for my model on ASUS' site but not knowing my exact model makes it a bit tricky.

Any advice or fellow people freaking on this issue? :)

There is no default. Windows 7 does not automatically recognize my drive.

Without disabling driver signing, I can't even install the driver I found at ASUS.

Let me reiterate - I don't have the driver CD (lost when I moved back from Europe). The only driver I can find on ASUS' site is for the motherboard, not the DVD drive.

I don't have anything to force it to install, sadly.

Did you have any problems with the drive before in Vista at all?

It's a DVD drive - it should not need seperate drivers. Windows 7 should have installed them correctly by itself.

Try reseating your DVD drive (take it out and putting it back in).

It was fine in windows vista - no playback issues.

I can't get to the DVD drive without prying the case - making me doubt a seating issue. It worked great - sitting on a desk the entire install process (it made the DVD disappear right after loading Windows 7 the first time).

I installed from the DVD drive (and can boot from it prior to loading Windows 7).

To make matters worse, I can find no record of what G50V model I have (my emails regarding the purchase are gone, my manuals and driver disk were lost enroute back to the states).

Thanks for the firware update information. I had no idea about the issue till I upgraded to Windows 7.

So far, it recognized it properly (updating from revision 4 to 7) and I didn't need to disable driver signing to install. Yes!

    Thank you, Thalanix!
