I cannot find my CD/DVD drive in the computer (as in going into My Computer or search and looking for the drive itself). I've found that this is a common problem with vista but I found the solution page by Microsoft ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461) but I could not find either the Upper or Lower filters to delete. Has anyone else had this problem? I've tried to update the driver for HL-DT ST DVDRAM GSA T50N but its updated...

In your device manager does it say there is an unknown device? If not I do not think its a driver issue I think maybe your drive is not connected or is bad.

I have read all of that stuff before in the past trying to trouble shoot a bad drive and it was just dead. Very rarely should that fix need to be implemented and its mostly for older stuff.

To test if it's software or hardware, a) does it even pop out when you push the eject button/does the LED come on on boot? If not it's clearly dead. b) if it does, insert a CD/DVD and reboot the computer, press ESC. After a few seconds the computer should display a list of potentially bootable devices, and the optical drive should be among them. If it's not there, it's clearly hardware.

If the optical drive is on that list, then it's possibly a Windows problem. To further test try to burn a live DVD and/or a live CD (e.g., Knoppix) on another computer, and boot from it in the problem notebook. If all works fine, then it's more likely to be a Windows problem.

    Hi
have e new ASUS F8V VR with a CD DVD HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50N. It is clearly a windows vista SP1 problem.
    1. That thing worked under "Esc"while starting the system. --> got a start adress.
    2. You can see it in the hardwareliste with no yellow sign.
    3. But when it comes to use that CD or DVD not a chance. 4. So I think of giving it away.

Did you try "update driver" on the DVD device? Maybe it's simply a driver problem.

Or simply uninstall the device from device manager, and reboot. That should install a driver automatically. Maybe it comes back to life then.
