Hello there!
I've got some of the usual problems i read about in the threads around here.
Keyboardlag (pretty much disapeared when i turned of the LED-lights in the back), freezelag while watching movies and playing games (the screen freezes) and some of the firstperson-shooter keycombinations that is perfered doesn't work (for example s+d+space and like w+d+space or something like that).
I got my Asus G50V delivered to me 27/10 -08 with BIOS 207, but on the asus website it says that the 207 BIOS was uploaded/released 30/10 -08 (I live in Sweden if that's any help thinking about the shipping and so on). What I'm wondering is if they might have upgraded the 207 and that installing BIOS 209 might resolve some of the freezelag/key combination issues?
Thank you for taking the time to read the thread.

Yeah, it should solve your problems. Make sure to update the bios, reboot, then install the new ATK hotkey driver. You should also update ATK OSD2.
BIOS:
http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G50V/G50V209as.zip
ATK Hotkey driver:
http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps/ATK_Hotkey__080912.zip
ATK OSD2:
http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Apps/ATKOSD2/ATKOSD2_080912.zip
Also if those links don't work just change the dlsvr03 to 02 or 04, the asus servers tend to go down. -
A million thanks for taking the time to link the updates to me.
I've never updated BIOS before. But I have been reading on the forums about how to do it.
I read using Winflash was not recommended, but when I did put the BIOS file on a USB-stick and ran the Easy flash through BIOS the memorystick didn't show as a drive I could choose in the Easy flash utility. I couldnt find it.
I could see:
A: When i pressed this option it said I needed a floppy disc.
B: Same as A.
C: Looked like it was my C: directory.
D: Don't know, didn't see any of the files I had on the USB-stick.
I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to this stuff, although I know some basic stuff about computers so I'm not totally lost.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a better way to flash the BIOS?
I have the BIOS file in the root of the memorystick wich is knowned as H: in windows.
Thanks again. -

The easiest way to do it is from inside windows with winflash, under start->all programs->asus utility->winflash
It should be installed by default... if not it's on the asus site for download -
Yeah, I'll use that as a last way out.
People always seems so scared of using that program saying that it's a pretty high probability something might go wrong compared to the Easy Flash utility.
I have put the file, named G50Vas.209 (the computer says it's a 209-file with that extension, but it is the default name of the file), on a USB-memory stick. I havn't configured the USB-memory in any way, just that i formated it to FAT32 and only have the one file on it.
Do I need to change anything in BIOS like perhaps boot from USB or something if there is such an option? Or do I need to prepare the USB-memory in some way? Or should the Easy Flash utility find the USB-memory stick by default and something is just wrong with the memory stick?
Thanks for taking the time so far ALLurGroceries, it's very much appriciated.
Sorry if the english isn't good.

Oh, you need the file extension to be .ROM to flash with Easy Flash, that's all

Tried changing to the .ROM file extension but I still can't seem to find the USB-memory stick in the Easy Flash utility. Otherwise I bet it would work like a charm as you said.
Still havn't changed to booting from USB-stick first. I'm probably making some rookie mistake. I guess I'll just have to wait until there is a "how-to"-guide to flashing BIOS for retarded swedes.
If you have any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong it's much appriciated. I'm not much of a risktaker when it comes to something I'm in dire need of for studying and paid a fortune for (atleast from my student point of view). I'm not blessed to live the globetrotter lifestyles you guys live.
Thanks again for the help ALLurGroceries! Keep the tips coming and I shall test them! -

Try putting it on the root of your C:\ drive... that's what I think you need to do to get EZ Flash to work.
But really, there is near-zero risk of flashing with winflash... unless your system is really unstable there is little to worry about. You are giving yourself a headache when you could've successfully flashed with winflash by now -
I think I will try using Winflash.
If you're not on Winflash/windows payroll I will e-mail them and get you on it, because you are very convincing.
I'm gonna go out to a nearby bar with some friends now, after a couple of beers I'm probably more of a risktaker.
During the night you will probably hear a loud "DO NOT WANT!" if anything goes wrong! (Some people will probably not understand that lame starwars joke)
Have a good one lads! -

good luck... try putting that .ROM on the root of C: that might work...
if you still have trouble post back -
Hi again!
This morning I woke up with a cold thinking this is the perfect day to just sit at home at the computer and do nothing.
Then I realized that I havn't upgraded my bios yet and that I will be thinking about it for the rest of the day if I didn't do it. So I started Winflash. One of the longest minutes in the world followed, then it was done.
I didn't close any programs before the installation in fear of that my newbieness would close some kind of important windowsdriver that would instantly cause a bluescreen.
Now it is done and I'm going to see if the keycombinations work in games and so on. Just wanted to let you guys know first that it worked.
Thanks for all the help ALLurGroceries, even though I ended up using the method I didn't wanna use your support was great and I did feel more safe using it after consulting with you.
Nice of you to take the time to help a newbie in need.
Going to give you +rep if I can figure out how to do it and if users with the title "Newbie" are allowed to give +rep.
Thanks again! -
glad it worked, when mine arrives I think I might just have the balls to use winflash now, cheers!
-
By the way, I did unzip the file again when I used Winflash. Putting the file, with the default name G50Vas.209 without adding the file extension .ROM, on the root of C:. I don't know if it makes any difference, just letting you know I didn't change the original name of the file.

ALLurGroceries, I have to tell you, great job you helped me too, I am expecting mine tomorrow and now I know how to react fast if I have the same problem.
Thank you once again! -

Cool, it's not as scary as this thread makes it out to be... but don't be afraid to post if you run into problems. Good luck!

The BIOS (209) and ATK updates described above do NOT fix the keyboard combination problem, i.e movement keys + space. Still looking for a solution.
-
It did however fix the issue of my X1 CPU use shooting up to ~30% every few seconds while idle, and also got rid of the keyboard lag issue.
-
does anyone know if this new bios fix webcam issues? My webcam is reallllllllly laggy. Also the speaker volume is pretty low even after changing the volume to 8 in the Bios.

GenTech...man a 1 million thanks from me too, I would never guess that too, it is not written on the keyboard, which is strange...
-
..You need to press Fn+G every time you boot?..
-

It was originally supposed to be a quick fix in beta 207, to be removed once the bug was stomped, which it never was. Fn+G just enables the s+d+space type combos with multiple keystrokes. It introduces random characters and adds a z before the space so it is NOT a real fix. Fn+G is a toggle, to switch it on and off.. it's really a cheap hack

Grr.... is this in all G50Vt units?
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
Yes it's part of BIOS 207 and 209 for G50V and G50Vt models.
-
So... is there any reason to get this if the w-a-s-d-space issue doesn't matter one iota? Does anyone happen to have a changelog?
-
In combination with the newest ATK drivers and hotkey, 209 is also fixing the keyboard lag issue for some people (not all!)
-
ALLurGroceries Vegan Vermin Super Moderator
There is a recent changelog here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4015625&postcount=9
Details from asus for 209 (latest as of right now) are: "solve the bug of the CPU speed full run issue"
Most people are fine with the latest atk drivers and since bios 205 with keyboard lag/missing keystrokes. The key combos OTOH have not gotten a real fix and I suspect they won't. But I am being cynical. -
I'm wondering if the key combo issue just doesn't affect the X1 or if I'm just incredibly lucky but I've been gaming on mine since the day I bought it and never had any problems with wasd + space.

Try opening notepad and hitting s + d + space at the same time
You should get sd and no space (or just an s or d or nothing at all), and nothing repeats. That is the issue, and applies to the combos involving wasd and others but wasd being the most important for gaming.
