I've decided to upgrade the CPU from P8600 to Q9100, after some googling I noticed that it is possible - but with a few obstacles on the way. When booting up i see the POST, BIOS and so on - until it's about to load Vista. It just stops there, it doesn't continue and that's including safe mode.
I'm at the moment using my P8600 in order to type/post this and wonder, how do i proceed? BIOS recognize the CPU as Q9100 with 2.26Ghz.

I dont think the G50 supports Quad's
You may get better answer by going to where you "google" your source -
currently there is no bios update to support quads in the g50/g51 series.
-
Well i tried this method http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=377597&page=4 but it didn't work, Vista keeps hanging at the bootup.
Edit:
Also, wouldn't the HDD issue also occur when the SATA bus gets overclocked? (or downclocked?) I recall it'd happen when overclocking the CPU. -

I haven't heard of plans for the G50 series to host quads. Hell, the G51 series, which should be able to use quads, sticks its middle finger at the Q9100 and QX9300 people have been trying to install on it.
-
Well, even if there isn't full support - doesn't mean we're not trying
I learned that the file crcdisk.sys is what that hangs up Vista, according to safe mode. -
Can you at least boot from the Windows DVD or something else than Vista? You could try a Repair.
Edit: You could also try a Linux Live CD (go see Ubuntu) -
crcdisk is the last driver on a stock vista install. I doubt it is hanging on that actual driver. It is just hanging on the next process of boot cycle.
-
Okay now i got a problem, apparently i made one flash too much. Now i got a black screen, no logo and no POST. But it seems to read the DVD drive in the bootup, for some reason. Is there a way to "blind flash" the BIOS to the original BIOS?
-
G50V does not support Quad Core, I tried already and it didn't work.

It might be a good idea to get yourself a USB key
they cost 5$+
-

could. try dling a stock BIOS from asus, renaming it to AMIBOOT.ROM (all caps), and burning it to the root directory. hold ctrl+home when its starting up, and pray that the boot block in the bios is intact (which, in your description, seems like it is). if it doesnt work from dvd, you could try from usb (if you buy one) and a removable floppy (if you buy/have one).
no guarantees, just myths...
assuming that you tried my post, the transplant didn't work? -
how much do you want for that p8600?
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
For one, he hasn't expressed any desire to sell it.
Two, "how much do you want?" is a question for the selling/buying board. -
-
By the way, now that you're selling G51VX with Quad's, would you mind save the BIOS into a file? It might contain the Quad support we're looking for, the motherboards on the G50's are identical (the same motherboard perhaps?). Anyway, it's just a nice thought if thalanix could "investigate" the BIOS and see what's different and what's not. -
http://www.gentechpc.com/Asus/G51Vx/G51VX203.zip
Yes it does support quad core and even QX9300 works great, however, don't forget the vBIOS is GTX260, if you flash G51Vx BIOS on G50V/G50Vt the laptop will end up black screen. -
@Ken: would it be possible to get the CPU signature for the Q9100 or QX9300 reported by RMclock? ive tried every kind of google/image search, no dice.
as for the microcodes in the bios', they're the same. checksums match between them as well. only difference is that they included one of the microcodes twice (still the same, sig [1]067A).
if asus doesn't add the microcodes to the patch table (like MSI does), then i have no idea how else they addedd quad support to the g51. i'll take a more indepth/per module look some time later (why summerschool why...) -
-
If you manage to get a quad working in there...you are god lol. I settled for an x9100 that works wonders for me but a quad is still a quad. Like the difference from unicore to dual.

The X9100 is the second best mobile processor, not counting the desktop CPUs some laptop models come with.
I'm happy with the X9100 I have right now. -
The thing is... it really is blind. And in cases like this, I'd at least would like a similar, if not identical system (without problems) sitting next to it, as I go through most of the steps... using the problem free one as a visual cue.
It might be easier, though more expensive to just let a repair shop do a repair, if they have the equipment to do EEPROM reprogramming. *shrugs* -
this might be a stupid question but would the gtx 260 fit in a g50v ? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Damn straight it's a stupid question. Yes, the GTX 260M will work in the G50v. There are several threads that have this question answered already with some of them by me. Please use the search button or Google.

Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
And that's a good thing.

Not really since the G50 fan unit spins at a slower rpm and the fan spindle is shaped flat so it blows out less air when matched at the same rpm as the G51 fan. In other words, when I ran 3dmark with my G50 and a 260m, temps hit 105C. 10C over the 260m when in the G51.
As I stated in another thread. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Then replace the G50 fan with a G51 fan.
-
Well see there is a small problem, not sold at the estore. Only the G50 fan is.
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
That sucks.
-
For G50 owners with a 260m. yes
-
Anything new on this topic?
i really don't want to upgrade my g50vt-x5 in hand, i love it, but a quad on this thing would be so nice. does t9900 get hot on this baby? q9000 has also high thermal print, might be an issue? my g50 @ 2.13 runs cool! -
My vote would be to flash a G50v(t) with a G51vx BIOS firmware version, this may work... although the potential for a brick is high. I'd hope that one could flash BIOS back to a compatible firmware via some keyboard shortcut and an external floppy drive ..
-
But if just ONE person would do it, and it would work, then hurrah let it be known!
Asus G50V and Q9100!
