How would a Asus G50V-A2 work as a traveling workstation for a photographer? I like having two drives internal - its how I work on my desktop ...and the 2 x 7200 rpm SATA's sound v.good.

Question: How is the display quality? For example, how does it compare to a MacBook Pro (which I will not get, although many photogs use them), and the other computer that Im looking at: the BestBuy Gateway® P-7811 FX Edition (on sale for $1295!!!) - I would add an external drive to that via eSATA.

Tell me about the display quality!

The main selling point for the Gateway P-7811 is its high end GPU for budget gamers. If you don't plan on gaming at all, then it would be waste to have all that power and not utilize it.
As for the Asus G50, that's also aimed at the gamers market, however it's dual hard drives also make it worthwhile for multimedia users whom stores vast quantity of data.
I can't say much for the Gateway, but the screen on the MBP is a bit better than the one on the Asus. As a matter of fact, there's not many laptop screens that are better than the MBP. The G50 screen has minimal light leakage from the bottom, but isn't noticeable unless you looking for it. The contrast is decent and brightness on par with other laptop screens (200-250 nits). Graininess is almost non-existent and viewing pictures & text for hours was never stressful for my eyes.

However...the screen resolution on the G50 is 1680x1050...a very very dense panel for the 15.4 form factor. Keep this in mind. Photos often look amazing...very stunning.
Usually you find 1680x1050 on 22" widescreen desktop panels, but is a nice treat here.
