    Hey all,

Have a slight issue. My GPU temperature keep fluctuating a lot. It'll stay in the low 50s/high 40s and sometimes hit the mid 60s and stay there for about 5-10 minutes.

I'm using the latest graphics drivers provided by windows updates. Is there anything I can do to keep my temperatures low besides using compressed air and buying a pricey cooler? Using Antec's cooler.

I spent $600 on eBay. It's a refurb. Should I refund it and get the g51vx instead?

Planning on playing L4D 2 and Dragon Age on it.

EDIT: Yes, it hits mid 60s randomly while in idle. It's winter time, so the temperature is at least 4 degrees Celsius colder in my room than normal.

I'm assuming you mean it hits mid 60s during idle. Because if you're hitting mid-60s while in game you definitely wouldn't want to return it.

Anyway, sounds exactly like a powermizer problem. Use GPU-Z to monitor your GPU clocks and see if you're upclocking constantly.

Hey, although I don't have the temperatures at 60°, the clocks on my gpu seem to change a lot, whats up with that?

Check it out. Clock readings are drastically different. It couldn't be flipping around just for Windows 7's Aero feature, could it?

Any chance I might have to do some GPU undervolting? If it's possible, any chance someone here could provide links to a guide?

Any advice on how to correct for this? I'd hate to disable Aero...otherwise, I would be better off reinstalling Vista, disabling Aero, and selling my copy of Win7 Pro on fleabay.

Dang...temps just crawled back up to 70 celsius.

I'm using a modified basic theme. No clockups, and the performance of Win7.

Aero should not clock your GPU up if all you're doing is staring at a blank desktop.

If I turn my Powermizer on, for instance, it will switch between lowest state, mid state, and max state depending on what I am doing (Firefox, Hulu, Windows Media Player etc). If it's an unchanging image like a website, it will stay in the lowest clock state.

Also, Powermizer is stupid in many applications. Hulu for instance, is not able to be run smoothly at the lowest clock state, and you will get stuttering images, but Powermizer insists on NOT clocking up for Hulu.

My suggestion is simple: do what I do. Disable Powermizer and set your own profiles via Nvidia System Tools. I have my default set at 275/383/550 for desktop usage.

I'm actually forced to do this since Powermizer does not work at all with my 24" plugged in 0 - it runs full clocks the entire time.

LOL. I'm going to need some step by ste instructions how to do this. How do I disable Powermizer and access Nvidia System Tools?

    Download 6.05: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.05.html

    Download Powermizer Switch: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=273276

Run Powermizer Switch turn everything to OFF.

NTools are integrated into your Nvidia control panel through "Device settings". Create a couple of profiles and save them. Load them on the fly with nvProfile (which is part of the 6.05 Nvidia System Tools).

Thanks. Switched it off, downloading System Tools at a coffeeshop. It'll be about 20 minutes before it finishes.

    EDIT:

Best case scenario I'm hoping for is having the best of both worlds. Temperatures remaining low while surfing the web and watching movies with few fluctuations and Aero running smoothly. Worst case scenario I envision is having to hunt down Vista X64 download and reinstalling it but having to call Microsoft customer service to activate it sing my Asus OEM Vista X64 code.

Sorry, but I can't seem to find "Device settings."

    I go to: Start->All Programs->Nvidia Corporation->Nvidia Control Panel(folder)->Nvidia Control Panel

Don't see it. Advanced settings is enabled.

You have to Accept End User License Agreement... you didn't think Nvidia was going to let you overclock your video card without you waiving any and all risks in case your computer blows up and gives you Partial thickness burns are you?

I'll get back to this in about half an hour. Heading to cousin's house. I'll do all the troubleshooting there.

    Cya until then!

Ok, set it to 275/383/550 as you instructed earlier. Is this the default setting to use while not gaming? Is there a separate profile great for gaming?

Whatever gaming clocks work for you, since you have a 9800GS right? My GTX 260M clocks will not be helpful. You can also tinker with the Desktop settings other than 275/383/550 to see what runs cooler for you without any slowdowns. You can probably get away with as low as 200/200 on the Core/Memory and 350 or so on the Shaders.

    UPDATE:

Lowest I've brought it down to is 143/199/1056.

But my temperatures refuse to go below 62 degrees. I'm unable to bring down those settings above any lower.

Is there anything else I can do besides undervolting to bring my temps back down to 53 degrees celsius? Ever since I installed system tools, it's been stuck at 62 degrees celsius. It won't go back down. Is there any way to bring my computer back down to "auto-mode" where it upclocks only during stuff like games?

    Your shaders are too high.

Turn Powermizer back on if you wanted it go to back the way it was before.

Turned off powermizer, seemed to have dropped it down to 169/100/338

Now at 56 celsius and falling. Cousin's room IS a bit warm.

EDIT: So I take it there's nothing much I can do about the fluctuations? Is there an undervolting guide that includes recommended numbers for the G50vt?

The fluctuations are a part of Powermizer. Use it and get it. Don't use it, and you won't get it.
